Sex & Nudity

  • An adult man and woman are shown having coital sex; this is a rapidly shifting and interrupted sequence in which only brief views of butts or sides or breasts are poorly visible. In a separate scene, a woman and man who are dating decide to have sex and are shown waking up in bed together; no nudity.
  • With his mother in the shower (foggy rear view) and his father shaving, a younger Jamie is shown on the toilet, and the camera switches to Jamie's point of view looking at his legs and visible genitals. The latter view is repeated later.
  • Jamie is seen listening to his parents having sex, mostly just a few moans.

Violence & Gore

  • A person dies painfully. We see them fall and hear their screams briefly.
  • A man grabs his estranged wife and tries to force her into bed. She resists. Their struggle and argument last a while.
  • An older teen punches a boy a couple of times, knocking him to the ground. No blood is seen.

Profanity

  • About 6 uses total: a "f*ck", a "sh*t", a couple each of "bastard" and "godd*mn".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There are a few very brief scenes of adults smoking cigarettes. Champagne is mentioned. Adults may drink alcohol at meals, but this isn't stated overtly and isn't emphasized. There are no scenes of drunkenness and no other drug use.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Although the actual content is relatively mild (limited contact, primarily implied or simulated) and the actor (Jacoby) is actually 14, some viewers may be distressed by the lengthy make-out scene between Mary and 10-year-old character Jamie.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A teen girl and Jamie talk themselves into making out. While she's fully clothed, we see him place his hand over her breast for a moment and discuss its reaction. They undress; we see her breasts and his chest, and their legs. Other than his hand on her stomach, and them hugging, no actual contact is seen. Simulated contact (out of frame, or shot from behind, etc.), he kisses her breast and her pubic area. Shown only from above the waist, they either dry-hump or engage in coitus for a few moments, then he runs away; it's implied he is unable either to achieve or to maintain arousal.

Violence & Gore

  • Jamie's mother's (Joan Hackett) clothes catch on fire. She falls down screaming and burns to death.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Jamie set a trap to kill his stepdad (Robert Klein), trying to burn him alive in an apartment fire. Jamie's mother dies instead, and it looks for a moment that Jamie may be trapped in the fire also.
