Plot Summary

Two researchers have come to San Francisco to compete for a research grant in music. One seems a bit distracted, and that's before he meets her: a strange woman who seems to have devoted her life to confusing and embarrassing him. At the same time, a woman has her jewels stolen and a government whistle-blower arrives with his stolen top-secret papers. All, of course, have the same style and color overnight bag. Trivia The fender bender Judy causes as she crosses the street to the Bristol Hotel was added on the spur of the moment. When no stunt cars were available, Peter Bogdanovich instructed a crew member to rent two cars and make sure he got collision insurance. Then he staged the wreck before returning the battered cars. Goofs Throughout the film Howard strikes several rocks with tuning forks, and then listens to the tuning fork as if he's expecting a different tone when he hits different rocks. Tuning forks are made to resonate at a fixed pitch, so no matter what object is struck with the fork, it will always sound the same. See more »

Crazy Credits The opening and closing credits are shown printed in a large book whose pages are turned by a woman's expressive hand. The opening credits conclude with the last page showing a drawing of a plaid overnight bag with the prologue: "Once upon a time, there was a plaid overnight case..." The drawing dissolves into the opening scene of the same overnight case in an airport baggage claim shelf. See more »
Quotes Judy: Love means never having to say you're sorry.
Howard: That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.
