All About Yves
writers_reign5 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is The Yves Montand Story in all but name given that, with the exception of his outstanding acting ability, every facet of Montand - the charm, charisma, expressive hands, suppleness, Astaire-like footwork, Astaire-like rehearse-til-you-drop perfectionism, and, last but by no means least, the magnificent voice - equalled only by Francis Albert Sinatra - and that's equalled, yes, but not eclipsed - is on display here to be relished and savoured by connoiseurs the world over. The final detail, the cherry on top of the cake if you will, is the fact that the documentary records the Left-leaning Montand rehearsing for a concert in aid of Chile, then in the midst of political upheaval, a documentary directed by fellow Left-leaning Chris Marker, working not for the first time with Montand. Seen in tandem with Jacques Demy's Three Seats For The 26th this is as good as it gets for Montand buffs.
