This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in April, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include an anthology, a creature-feature, some found footage, and two slashers.
The House of the Dead (1978)
Directed by Sharron Miller.
The House of the Dead — also known as Last Stop on 13 Street and Alien Zone — is an American stab at an Amicus-style anthology film. Shot in Oklahoma with students from Osu, this low-budget horror omnibus does a creditable job of capturing the macabre spirit of The House That Dripped Blood and The Vault of Horror.
This regional horror collection delivers four sub-stories as well as a wraparound about an adulterous husband (John Ericson...

Virus: 32 is the latest in the seemingly neverending stream of zombie, or zombie adjacent, films that have come our way since George Romero rebooted the genre with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. This time it’s a plague of the kind of viral zombies such as we’ve seen in everything from 28 Day Later to Strain 100 and The Sadness being unleashed on Uruguay’s capital city of Montevideo by director Gustavo Hernández and writer Juma Fodde (You Shall Not Sleep).
Iris (Paula Silva; In the Quarry) works as a security guard at an athletic facility. She’s estranged from her husband Javi (Franco Rilla) and has a young daughter Tata (Pilar Garcia) whom the opening dialogue suggests she rarely sees. Before we roll into August, we have one last round of July home media releases to look forward to, even if this week is one of the lightest weeks I’ve seen all year, with only three horror titles making their way home on Tuesday. Scream Factory is giving Piranha II: The Spawning a Blu-ray release, Vinegar Syndrome has resurrected The House of the Dead on Blu-ray, and Warner Archive has given Village of the Damned (1960) an HD overhaul as well.
The House of the Dead
Four tales of intrigue and horror await anyone brave enough to enter the House Of The Dead... When a philandering husband accidentally finds himself lost during a rainstorm, he's taken in by an elderly mortician and is forced to learn the ghastly origins of four freshly arrived corpses: a scornful teacher whose students teach her a fatal lesson, an amateur filmmaker with a deadly muse,...

From on-rails shooter House Of The Dead came the finest typing tutor videogame of all time...
When Sega first released The House Of The Dead into arcades in 1996, and subsequently onto the much-loved Dreamcast console a year or two later, there were few signs that it would give mutate and give Mavis Beacon a run for its money. The original game – and its sequels - was an on-rails light gun shooter. You pointed your pretend gun at the screen, you shot zombies, stress melted away almost as fast as the coins left your pocket. Until it got to the really hard bits and boss battles. Subsequent sequels would follow a similar pattern, until enthusiasm for zombie-blasting lightgun games seemed to peter out.
But before it petered out, it took one of the strangest left turns in videogaming history (I don’t say that lightly), as House Of The Dead...

In UK cinemas from today, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter continues the long-running story of Alice (Milla Jovovich), the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

Your team of four survivors have to battle zombie hordes by utilising their unique strengths. Playable as single player or multiplayer cooperative, and even with eight players in a four on four survival match, Left 4 Dead is the most sociable game on our list.

As someone who grew up spending summers down at the Jersey Shore, I sure do miss the glory days of the arcade. There was something for everyone, be it classics such as Pac-Man or the harsh metal mats of Dance Dance Revolution. For me, though, it was all about the light-gun games. Titles such as Time Crisis and The House of the Dead tested skills while devouring quarters.
As time has progressed, though, both arcades and the light-gun genre have fallen by the wayside. Sure, there have been attempts to revive the genre, like The House of the Dead: Overkill - a delightful release - but nothing has really stuck. A new challenger has arisen, though, as French developer He-saw steps up to the plate with their debut title, Blue Estate.

With the recent launches of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, I got to thinking about some of the other big console launches I have seen over the years. One of those consoles would be the Sega Dreamcast and its wide variety of launch titles. While people were arguably more excited over the likes of Sonic Adventure, NFL 2K, and The House Of The Dead 2, it would be a sequel to an old PlayStation fighter that would draw the most acclaim.
The original Soulcalibur was a graphical showcase for the system and after thinking about it, would probably go down as my favorite launch title for any console period. This would make the four year wait for Soulcalibur II almost unbearable, but the series wouldn’t let me down with that title either. While future iterations of the franchise would leave me feeling cold, I would continue to carry a special...

Gamers are always talking about console and PC gaming these days, but remember when you used to be able to frequent an arcade with the latest and greatest in pay-per-play machine gaming? It started with classics like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, but has evolved into completely immersive experiences that let you do things like shoot baddies while holding a true-to-form machine gun, or paddle a raft while sitting in a mock flotation vessel that moves as you get thrown around on-screen. Amazing right? Why get wet when you can paddle in an air conditioned building?!
But since Remy and I are the horror guys, we were always drawn to thrilling shooters. Sure, we still played the crap out of games like Time Crisis and Big Buck Hunter, but gunning down monsters and ghouls is where the real action exists. I mean, who doesn’t want to place themselves in the middle of a horror movie,...

Sony posted this week’s PlayStation Plus Update today, revealing that subscribers of the premium service will be able to download Foosball 2012 for free on both the PS3 and Ps Vita as part of the Instant Game Collection.
As you might have suspected from the title, Foosball 2012 is a video game version of Foosball that was released to the sound of critics saying “meh” last year. The title features both single and multiplayer modes, along with PlayStation Move support and cross-compatibility (including cross-play and game saves) between the two systems.

The “omnibus” horror film – a feature length collection of cinematic horror stories – is one of the most beloved and respected horror movie genres for many reasons; but most importantly, horror is often very effective in concentrated doses (just check out our excellent short film collection for some great examples), especially with a storyline that's designed to set up one good shock or twist, saving the writer the effort of milking more scares out of a single tale. The field is overflowing with some landmark films, including the timeless 1945 classic Dead of Night (still creepy and funny after all these years); Roger Corman's Poe collection Tales of Terror; a ton of cool flicks like From Beyond the Grave from UK studio Amicus; EC Comics-inspired films like the original Tales from the Crypt (actually another Amicus film) and George Romero's Creepshow; made-for-tv faves like Trilogy of Terror; and stylish international...

The Innkeepers
American film-maker, Ti West, has made a name for himself in the horror genre with previous releases like Cabin Fever 2, V/H/S, The House Of The Dead and Trigger Man. He sticks to what he knows in his latest film, minimalist chiller, The Innkeepers.
At The Yankee Pedlar Inn, young employees Luke (Pat Healy) and Claire (Sara Paxton) are keeping the hotel ticking before it closes its doors for good. To alleviate the boredom, Luke has built a website tracking ghostly goings on and Claire is determined to uncover the identity of spirits haunting the place.
A guest many years earlier, Madelaine O'Malley killed herself in the hotel after being jilted on her wedding day. To avoid scandal, hotel management hid her body for two days before it was discovered. Rumour has it she has been spotted over the years since the hotel re-opened in the 1960s.

Sadly, other than a few sporadic games here and there, we really don't use it as much of a gaming console. That could change soon, though, as Sega has announced some news we've been dying to hear!

Two Films in Competition at Iffi 2011
Still from Nader and Simin
An art film is the result of filmmaking as a serious, independent undertaking aimed at a niche rather than mass market. Film scholars typically define ‘art films’ through those formal qualities that mark them as different from mainstream Hollywood films, which includes, among other things, a narrative dwelling upon the real problems of everyday life, an emphasis on the authorial expressivity of the director rather than generic convention and a focus on the subjectivity of the characters rather than on plot. If the art film finds it difficult to reach wide audiences, the place where it thrives is the international film festival in which films that rarely get public releases are shown to a discerning public. But the ‘discerning public’ at international film festivals may have actually helped create a new kind of cinema poorer in local significance, as...
