Trivialidades:
The main location of this film was an actual Los Angeles car wash a few blocks from McArthur Park. It was torn down in the late 1980s. While it was open, the marquee of the car wash announced it was featured in this film. másCitas:

I saw this first during it's initial theatrical release and loved it. I've seen the chopped up TV version many times since and still love it. What amazes me is that as a silly, fun comedy it won two awards at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for Technical Grand Prize for director Michael Shultz and Best Music for Norman Whitfield. Well, Whitfield is no surprise but Technical Grand Prize? It also was nominated for Cannes' Golden Palm Award. Former Motown producer Whitfield also picked up the Grammy for Best Original Score and got a Golden Globe nomination for the Theme from Car Wash. A great soundtrack from Whitfield and the group Rose Royce which gave them a #1 song and a #1 album. A great ensemble cast which includes Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Antonio Fargas, Garrett Morris, Irwin Corey, Ivan Dixon, Bill Duke and The Pointer Sisters when they were the original quartet. This movie is like M*A*S*H in reverse. M*A*S*H take a serious subject and fills it with zany subplots while Car Wash takes a Zany subject and fills it with serious subplots. Lonnie, the ex-con car wash manager has seen it all but doesn't want to see the frustrated Duane who has become the radical Abdulah take a path to prison. Marlene is hooker caught up in the fast lane of drugs and prostitution in L.A. Mona is the waitress that has to put up with the car wash clowns everyday and Marsha is the office manager looking for love. Almost everybody else who works the car wash or somehow comes to it are an amazing array of off-the -wall characters. Director Michael Shultz had a sting of black urban comedies in the 70's with Cooley High, Which Way is Up and Car Wash. He got critically raked over the coals for directing Sgt. Pepper's lonely Hearts Club Band after Car Wash and since has done mostly television directing. director/writer Joel Schumacher wrote the screenplay who also wrote St. Elmo's Fire and The Wiz but would become better known as a director for such films as Flatliners, The Lost Boys, Falling Down and Phone Booth as well as St. Elmo's Fire and a couple of the Batman movies. Veteran art director Robert Clatworthy had a versatile career in all film genres and he did Car Wash at the end of his career which included the films Psycho, Touch of Evil, The Incredible Shrinking Man, To Hell and Back and Phantom Lady. Editor Christopher Holmes did Five Easy Pieces and cinematographer Frank Stanley did Magnum Force and The Eiger Sanction. It's a great cast and crew and a fun film with lot's of great characters and music. I would give it a 9.0 out of 10.
