We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Also, we’re looking at fictional groups here, so the Ramones from Rock & Roll High School don’t show up, nor do Talking Heads,...

Backstage at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, after she received the Oscar for costume design for “Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter talked about the significance of her win for other costume designers of color coming behind her. “Finally the door is wide open and I’ve been struggling and digging deep and mentoring and doing whatever I could to raise others up,” she said. “And I hope through my example, this means that there is hope and other people can come on in and win an Oscar just like I did.”
The costume design world has never been the most inclusive. When Carter entered the business, she had few African American role models to emulate. When asked to list black costume designers who were working when she got her start, she name-checks only the late Palmer Brown, who designed for television series like “Gimme a Break!” and “A Different World.

The remake of the 1976 musical film “Sparkle” isn’t intended to serve as a historical document, but it does attempt to invoke the sounds and feel of the Motown era along with race relations in 1960s Detroit. It’s “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks’ first significant film appearance as its title role, and was to be the late Whitney Houston’s return to the big screen (and now it serves as her swan song). It gets further wattage from freshly penned contemporary R&B songs from R. Kelly, as well as an ample opportunity reintroduce Curtis Mayfield classics like “Something He Can Feel.” It's...

Chicago – The female heroine driven film “The Hunger Games” had held the top spot for the past four weeks but has been knocked out by “Think Like a Man” based on Steve Harvey’s best-selling book. The movie is directed by Tim Story and written by Keith Merryman & David A. Newman starring Michael Ealy (“Barbershop”), Jerry Ferrara (“Entourage”), Meagan Good (“The Steve Harvey Show”), Regina Hall (“Death at a Funeral”), Kevin Hart (“The Five-Year Engagement”), Taraji P. Henson (“The Family that Preys”), Terrence J (“Sparkle”), Jenifer Lewis (“Meet the Browns”), Romany Malco (“Baby Mama”), Gary Owen (“Daddy Day Care”), and Gabrielle Union (“Bad Boys 2”). The weekend gross was $34 million almost tripling the reported production budget of $12 million.

The host of Bet's "106 & Park" by day, emerging actor Terrence J (who also goes by his given name, Terrence Jenkins) is just one of the heartthrobs in the romantic comedy "Think Like a Man," in which a group of friends turn the tables on their women.
In the movie, based on Steve Harvey's best-selling book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," the men find out that their girlfriends have been manipulating them with the help of the advice in Harvey's book. Feeling betrayed, they set out to use the book and manipulate them right back -- with predictably unpredictable results.
Terrence, who plays mama's boy Michael in the film, talked to us about working with Steve Harvey, the romantic advice we should expect from this film and how he'd love to play a certain president.

If, for whatever reason, Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls didn’t strike you as a shiny enough spectacle, here comes Salim Akil‘s remake of Sparkle, which tells essentially the same story as Dreamgirls, though the film’s first trailer resembles a glossy music video devoid of any of the top-notch performance or actual drama that made Dreamgirls even remotely watchable. Alas, the film does feature a number of interesting actors (including Jordin Sparks in her first feature, Mike Epps, and Derek Luke), and what will likely end up the film’s big selling point – the final performance of Whitney Houston. The original Sparkle hit screens in 1976, thanks to director Sam O’Steen and writers Joel Schumacher (really) and Howard Rosenman, with music composed by Curtis Mayfield and no less than Aretha Franklin singing the songs for the film’s soundtrack. The film was loosely based on the story of The Supremes, featuring...

With her untimely death earlier this year, the focus of the musical drama Sparkle has now shifted to highlight Whitney Houston‘s last acting performance. We’ve got the first trailer today and I have to give kudos to the marketing team to not solely play up this aspect. I’m curious to see how much she factors into the film, as she plays supporting to American Idol star Jordin Sparks. From Salim Akil, director of last year’s Jumping the Broom, this remake of the 1976 film is inspired by The Supremes and you can see the first official trailer below. I’m at least down for seeing Cee-Lo Green in another film again after his all-to-brief apperance in Mystery Men.
Synopsis:

On February 11, we lost Whitney Houston, one of the great voices of the 20th century, but the "Bodyguard" star will take one final bow in the role she shot for the big razzle-dazzle remake of 1976 cult classic "Sparkle."
The 2012 version will hit theaters on August 17, but TriStar Pictures saw fit to debut some new footage from the trailer on "The Today Show" (via MSNBC), and just this small glimpse announces that her role as faded singer Emma will not only echo her own life struggles but could bring posthumous accolades to the most-awarded female singer of all-time.
Originally intended as a major comeback for the then 48-year-old Houston, who hadn't made a feature since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife," her character is a feisty, proper mother raising three daughters, including the Motown-inspired singing sensation of the title. Whitney Houston in "Sparkle"

The trailer for Whitney Houston's "Sparkle" debuted Monday (April 2), giving fans a sneak peek at the singer/actress' final performance.
The first glimpse of Houston in the trailer shows her character, Emma, dancing to the Motown music her daughters are playing in the living room, sung by one Cee Lo Green. Houston jokes, "Yeah, y'all like that, huh? Makes you want to dance, huh? I'm going to get it and you will too. Keep dancing like that, you'll bring home some kid you can't feed." The humor continues as her daughters jump into bed together to hide from Emma after arriving home after their curfew. "My babies," she says. "I know y'all don't love each other that much."
As the trailer progresses, the comedy dims and the weight of fame takes its toll.

A day before the Oscars, Houston's "Sparkle" co-star Derek Luke reflected on working with the singer when we caught up with him at the Independent Spirit Awards.
"The beautiful thing about being in 'Sparkle' is that we had something that was recorded that I can hold onto, and in that time, me and my wife and Whitney ... the other cast, we really bonded," he shared.

Adele might have dominated the 2012 Grammys but the solemn spirit of Whitney Houston's untimely death marked the festivities. I grew up loving her songs in the 80s, humming to "I Will Always Love You" in the 90s, and even watching her movies throughout the decade such as "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale." And in the 2000s, I was aghast at her rapid downfall marked by her appearance in "Being Bobby Brown."
But in August 17th of this year, Houston will once again take the center stage with her final film performance in Sony's "Sparkle." The studio has revealed that they will release the film as planned. Starring Jordin Sparks, the remake of the 1976 movie starring Irene Cara chronicles the rise of an all-girl singing group similar to the Supremes.

Even in death, Whitney Houston's ties to "American Idol" remain strong.
Her songs have long been a staple of over-reaching "Idol" wannabes and Sunday's Grammy Awards will close with a tribute sung by one time "Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson. And come this August, her final film starring Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks will get its theatrical release.
Houston, who's last feature film with 1996's "The Preacher's Wife," optioned the remake of the 1976 film (which starred Irene Cara) 12 years ago in 2000. She will play the mother of three sisters who form a 1950s girl group before being torn apart by one's drug addition and another -- Sparkle's (Sparks) -- rise to solo fame.
Aaliyah was originally meant for the Sparkle role prior to her death in a 2001 plane crash.
Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Omari Harwick and Cee-Lo Green also star.

The late Whitney Houston will make a final appearance on the big screen this year. Sony Pictures announced plans to release "Sparkle" on Aug. 17 in the wake of the actress/singer's Feb. 11 passing, The Hollywood Reporter revealed. In November 2011, Houston sat down with "The Insider" and her co-star Jordin Sparks to discuss their upcoming film, which has been more than a decade in the making. Plans to reboot the 1976 film -- which is loosely based on the career of The Supremes -- were scrapped when Aaliyah, set to star in the movie, tragically passed away. "God has his own time," Houston said in the scarily timely interview. "I have to put in that perspective. "[Aaliyah] was absolutely perfect ... and we were gonna do this thing ... and then [it] just … happened. Very sad and very memorable moment for me. I remember just crying fiercely and profusely. And I was going to meet with...

[1] Zach Gilford, best known as sensitive Qb Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights, will be starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. Described [2] as "a combination of Die Hard and High Noon," the action film revolves around a border town sheriff (Schwarzenegger) who finds himself tasked with stopping a drug kingpin from crossing the U.S. border. Gilford will play one of the cops working under Schwarzenegger's character. The Last Stand marks the English-language debut of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil), as well as Schwarzenegger's return to acting. Given the kind of work that Schwarzenegger and Gilford have each done in the past, I'm having a little trouble imagining them starring next to each other. But Gilford's a wonderful actor who deserves to get way more work than he does, so I'm just happy to see him pick up a higher-profile gig for once. The Last Stand...

HollywoodNews.com: Exclusive: The remake of “Sparkle” is on the road to starting next month. Whitney Houston, already announced, will play Jordin Sparks‘s mother. In this version, Whitney’s character will not be a maid but a former R&B star who’s gone back to the church. I am told that Whitney will sing two gospel songs in the film.
The rest of the soundtrack is divided between the original Curtis Mayfield songs and four new songs from R. Kelly. Added to the cast: pop star Cee Lo Green, and actor Derek Luke. Debra Martin Chase and Howard Rosenman are producing, Salim Akil is directing from a script by his wife, Mara Brock Akil. “Sparkle” will be released by TriStar/Sony in 2012 or 2013 at the latest, not 2014 as stated in the imdb.
And what about Whitney? My source say she’s in great shape, and never looked better.
