Specialty U.S. distributors Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures have acquired Italian director Pasquale Marrazzo’s LGBTQ drama “The Neighbor” for release in North America from Rome-based Coccinelle Film Sales.
“The Neighbor” (which is titled “Hotel Milano” in Italy) is about two young men who are in love but get bullied by a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads that makes their life impossible as hatred and intolerance seeps into the rapport between their respective families.
It’s the fifth feature written and directed by Marrazzo whose debut “South of the Sun” launched from Toronto’s Discovery section in 2001. Marrazzo’s “I Dream of the World on Friday” was in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present Competition in 2009.
Marrazzo self-produced “Neighbor” does not yet have Italian distribution. Pic stars newcomer actors Michele Costabile and Jacopo Costantini as the leads and boasts a score by prizewinning Italian composer Teho Teardo.

Coccinelle Film Sales Takes Venice and Rome Drama ‘The Girl Has Flown’ – Rome Mia Market (Exclusive)
Coccinelle Film Sales has taken world rights to Italian director Wilma Labate’s female empowerment drama “The Girl Has Flown,” which recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
Pic will have its market premiere at Rome’s Mia Market prior to also playing at the upcoming Rome Film Festival.
The latest film by Labate – a veteran auteur known for political and female-centric dramas such as “My Generation” and “Sunday” – is based on an idea by Italian twins Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo, who made a splash in Berlin in 2019 as co-directors of “Bad Tales,” winner of the Silver Bear for best screenplay. They more recently helmed drama “America Latina” in competition at Venice this year.
The D’Innocenzo Brothers and Labate co-wrote the screenplay for “Girl Has Flown,” which turns on a lonely and restless teenager named Nadia living in the Italian border city of Trieste at the northern tip of Italy’s Adriatic coast,...

Coccinelle Film Sales has taken international rights on Italian director Ciro De Caro’s female empowerment drama “Giulia” ahead of its upcoming world premiere in the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section.
Pic stars emerging actor Rosa Palasciano (“Tales for Heart and Mind”) in the title role as a young woman who winds up on the street in Rome during a torrid summer seeking refuge and a place in the world.
“Giulia” is the third feature by De Caro, who is specialized in young adult dramas. Actor Hal Holbrook, acclaimed star of stage, screen and feature films, has passed away at age 95. Holbrook rarely had the leading role in films but built a career as a reliable and beloved character actor. On stage, his one-man show about Mark Twain earned him a Tony Award and a subsequent Emmy for the television production. Holbrook's film career got a boost in 1968 in the popular film "Wild in the Streets" in which he played Kennedyesque presidential candidate who enlists the services of a popular rock star on his campaign tours. The plan goes awry when the musician inspires a worldwide, violent youth revolution. Holbrook's other feature films include "The Group", "The Fog", "Magnum Force", "Midway", "The Star Chamber", "The Firm", "Creepshow" and "Julia". Frasier‘s long-in-the-works return to TV is getting closer to reality.
Paramount+ is eying a 10-episode order for a followup to the Emmy-winning NBC series produced by Frasier studio CBS TV Studios, sources said.
Frasier star and executive producer Kelsey Grammer, who has been leading the efforts to revive the iconic series over the past two and a half years, is in talks with CBS Studios to reprise his role and executive produce the sequel, I have learned. David Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier Crane’s (Grammer) brother Niles in the original series, also has been approached about returning, I hear.
Both Grammer and Pierce headline new series, ABC’s Kelsey Grammer/Alec Baldwin comedy and HBO’s Julia, respectively, so I hear the new Frasier installment would not get underway until 2022, if all deals with actors and producers close successfully.
Grammer met with a number of writers for the Frasier followup.

The 2020 Best Supporting Actor lineup, which included performances that ranged from 43 to 56 minutes long, proved that high screen times are fairly common in the category. Six actors have won the award with over one hour of screen time, while an additional 18 nominees have passed that mark. Here is a look at the 10 performances that rank as the longest of them all (and here are the 10 longest winners):
10. Jeff Bridges (“Thunderbolt and Lightfoot”)
1 hour, 6 minutes, 23 seconds (57.74% of the film)
After Mickey Rooney and Sal Mineo, Bridges became the third man to receive two acting Oscar nominations by age 25, and there has not been another in the 45 years since. His second bid for playing the titular Lightfoot also earned him a spot on this list and was the 11th nominated supporting male performance to have over one hour of screen time. Bridges finally scored his first win at age 60, as a lead in “Crazy Heart,...

Since 1972, Ben Johnson has held the record for shortest Oscar-winning performance in the Best Supporting Actor category. His screen time in “The Last Picture Show” falls just under 10 minutes, and his is the only performance to win the award without hitting that mark. Yet, there are 16 other supporting males who have been nominated for even shorter roles, and Johnson has placed outside of the list of 10 shortest nominees since 1986. Here is a look at the current roster, which has been in place for just two years (and here are the 10 shortest winners):
10. Sam Elliott (“A Star Is Born”)
8 minutes, 45 seconds (6.45% of the film)
When Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2019, his one-hour, six-minute, and 38-second performance in “Green Book” became the longest to ever win in the category. Some of his competitors also made history, with the year marking the first time that two actors with...

At the 1962 Golden Globes ceremony, Judy Garland became the first woman to be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement, after 10 men had received it before her. That same year, 24-year-old Jane Fonda was named one of three recipients of the now retired Most Promising Female Newcomer award for her debut in Joshua Logan’s “Tall Story.” Over the six decades since, Fonda has become one of the most lauded actresses in the history of the Golden Globes. At age 83, she is set to further solidify that distinction, having now been chosen as the newest and 16th female recipient of the DeMille award.
Fonda’s interest in acting was sparked by her father, Hollywood legend and 1980 DeMille award honoree Henry Fonda. After studying at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg, she began to build a legendary acting career of her own. Indeed, she “has been a fixture...

Jane Fonda will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes.
The honor recognizes Fonda’s illustrious career in film, one that saw her top the box office and cement her name in movie history by starring in such classics as “Klute,” “The China Syndrome” and “9 to 5.” More recently, Fonda has appeared in the Netflix series “Grace & Frankie” as well as “Book Club” and “Youth.” Her other films include “The Electric Horseman,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “Coming Home,” and “Julia.” One of her biggest commercial successes was the 1982 release of her first exercise video, “Jane Fonda’s Workout,” which went on to sell 17 million copies and spawned several followups.

Two years after John Ireland (“All the King’s Men”) became the first supporting Oscar nominee to deliver a longer performance than a lead nominee from the same film (Broderick Crawford) in 1949, Kim Hunter (“A Streetcar Named Desire”) did the same versus Marlon Brando. Since then, nine more Best Supporting Actress nominees have had higher screen time totals than a co-star nominated in a lead rce. Here is a look at each instance, in order from lowest screen time difference to highest.
1961: Mary Ure (“Sons and Lovers”) – 21 minutes, 4 seconds
0 minutes, 50 seconds over Trevor Howard
Although she is absent from nearly all of the first half of “Sons and Lovers,” Ure still manages to appear in over 20% of the film. Up to that point, less than half of all Best Supporting Actress-nominated performances had reached that mark. Howard’s performance, on the other hand, did not reach that percentage, but he received a lead nomination regardless.

Photo: 'The Graduate'/Embassy Pictures I’d like to believe that the secret yearning for a picturesque, darkly academic life lives inside all of us, some more prominent than others, and we all share the same dream: to spend our days sipping from a teacup, staring out the rainy windows in our own private library. While this might not be the case for everyone, there is no denying that “dark academia” is one of the most popular aesthetics to dominate our culture, and Hollywood has been a leading factor in this social spread. What started as the romanization of high education through classic novels and proper society has turned into a mass-market for selling tweed blazers and enjoying the finer things in life- but that does not mean filmmakers are factory-producing their stories of refinery and godspeed. Today, we’ll be exploring the world of dark academia, and some of...

HBO Max has given an eight-episode series pickup to “Julia,” the scripted series based on the life of world-renowned celebrity chef Julia Child.
The series, which stars “Happy Valley’s” Sarah Lancashire as Child and “Frasier” alum David Hyde Pierce as Child’s husband, is set to resume production in the late spring.
The hourlong series from Lionsgate Television is described as an exploration into “an evolving time in American history – the emergence of a new social institution called public television, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural growth” through the lens of Child’s life “and her singular can-do spirit.”
In addition to Lancashire and Hyde Pierce, “Julia” also stars Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz, Fiona Glascott, Bebe Neuwirth, Isabella Rossellini and Jefferson Mays. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” alum Daniel Goldfarb is writer on the series, with “The Society’s” Chris Keyser as...

The majority of Steven Soderbergh’s delicious new comedy “Let Them All Talk” occurs on a cruise ship crossing from New York to London. Amidst the mass of passengers onboard, we’re focused on four women: Alice Hughes (Meryl Streep), a fictional Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist, her two oldest friends, Roberta (Candice Bergen) and Susan (Dianne Wiest), and Alice’s zealous new literary agent (Gemma Chan). Simmering among these four women are countless secrets, resentments, and regrets — and somewhere across the Atlantic, all of them are bound to come to a boil.
In directing the film, Soderbergh took a guerrilla approach. He eschewed the usual trove of lights and equipment, favoring natural lighting and a wheelchair for dolly shots. Much of the dialogue was unscripted, too — Streep has said that Soderbergh provided the actors with outlines of each scene and directed them to improvise their lines. The result is an organic,...

Director Ryan Murphy’s upcoming adaptation of the Broadway musical “The Prom” is timely, making strides for diversity and inclusion. With an all-star ensemble and two breakout stars in Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose, the Netflix feature is in prime position to hit the zeitgeist when viewers begin streaming it in December.
“The Prom” can easily be envisioned as the movie that runs on repeat by high schoolers everywhere. If it were released in theaters under normal circumstances, it would have all the makings of a $150 million hit for a studio. From an awards season perspective, the movie is an obvious frontrunner for the Golden Globes comedy or musical races. Still, it can also make serious headway with the Academy voters, including best picture. Clearly Murphy’s best directing effort yet, it will be fascinating to see how the Academy, along with the general public, respond. I would expect...

Easily the best family-oriented black experience movie of the early 1970s, the Third World Cinema Corporation’s first film features Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones in a funny, endearing saga of life in the welfare system, with human feeling and compassion to spare. But the triumphant socially progressive movie fails the 2020 diversity test — its primary producer, cameraman, writers and director are white. Are we still allowed to enjoy it?

Even though he wasn’t known for his TV work, blockbuster film actor Chadwick Boseman was featured in the final slot. NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant was not mentioned, even though the event was being held in the Staples Center.
With dozens of television veterans having died since last year’s mid-September ceremony, people certainly included were these six TV Academy Hall of Fame members:
Diahann Carroll
Leonard Goldberg (executive at 20th Century Fox and ABC; producer of “Charlie’s Angels” and more)
Jim Lehrer (anchor/reporter of “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour)
Regis Philbin

For Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on ABC, producers will have the always difficult task of assembling a memoriam segment. Even though the event hosted by Jimmy Kimmel will be virtual, it’s a certainty they will include the popular “In Memoriam” on the show.

David Hyde Pierce is set to star opposite Sarah Lancashire in Julia, HBO Max’s drama pilot about the famous chef, trailblazing cookbook author and TV personality, from Chris Keyser and Lionsgate Television. Pierce is joining the project in a recasting. He replaces Tom Hollander, who originally had been tapped for the role of Paul Child, Julia’s loving and devoted husband, but has exited the project.
Julia originally was cast at the beginning of the year and was about to go into production when the coronavirus pandemic shut down filming in mid-March. According to sources, the scheduling change as well as Covid travel-related circumstances led to Hollander’s decision to pull out. The English actor is based in the UK, while Julia will film in the U.S., likely in Boston. The pilot doesn’t have a production start date yet. While Hollander has opted not to travel to the U.

Vanessa Redgrave, Oscar-winner for “Julia,” and Ralph Fiennes, Oscar-nominee for “Schindler’s List” and “The English Patient,” will lead fundraiser events in aid of London’s Freud museum.
Housed in the final home of the father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, and his daughter Anna, a pioneer of child psychoanalysis, the museum receives no direct public funding and has incurred significant financial losses during the coronavirus pandemic. Both the fundraising events have been instigated and devised by Redgrave.
The first event is on Sept. 13 where Redgrave and Fiennes, joined by actor Daisy Bevan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”) will read texts ranging from Freud, Sylvia Pankhurst and William Shakespeare.
This will be followed by an Oct. 4 event where Redgrave will be joined by actors Paul Hilton (“Lady Macbeth”) and Bevan for readings and reflections on the refugee experience. Before lockdown, Redgrave was working with the museum on an exhibition, “Code Name Mary:...

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

The 1970s was the Golden Age of the “Movie of the Week” with the three networks –ABC, CBS and NBC — not only offering theatrical flicks several days a week, but also made-for-tv movies. These ran the gamut from the silly — 1973’s “The Horror at 37,000 Feet” — to such acclaimed award-winning fare as 1970’s “Tribes,” 1971’s “Brian’s Song” and “Duel,” 1972’s “That Certain Summer” and “The Glass House,” 1974’s “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and 1975’s “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and “Love Among the Ruins.”
I have especially warm memories of ABC’s “Love Among the Ruins,” which marked the only film pairing of Oscar-winning legends Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier. I was a junior in college when it originally aired and I recall an Sro crowd at the Brooks Hall TV lounge at Allegheny College in Meadville (Sharon Stone’s hometown) Pa to watch the exquisite romantic comedy.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a biopic of Sammy Davis Jr. Studio has set Charles Murray to write the script. The film is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura; fellow musical icon Lionel Richie, latter of whom was instrumental in gathering rights from Sammy Davis Jr’s estate; and Mike Menchel. In honor of Oscar’s favorite actress, Netflix and chill with 7 Meryl Streep outings.
Since 1977, when she made her feature debut in “Julia” opposite Jane Fonda, Streep has become a steady fixture during Hollywood’s awards season. She continues to hold the record as the actor with the most Oscar nominations at 21 and has won three times. In 2018, she was up for a Golden Globe for her passive-aggressive granny on HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and played the quite rich and highly opinionated dowager Aunt March in Greta Gerwig’s Best Picture nominated adaptation of “Little Women.”
But mighty Meryl was also wooed to do her first role for a streaming site this year – namely Netflix. Directed by esteemed Steven Soderbergh, “The Laundromat” is a twisty, multi-layered account of the Panama Papers scandal involving offshore bank accounts, shell companies and other shady ways that the wealthy can avoid taxes and maintain their status.

Oscar voters have proven time and again that they love actors who portray historic people. Maybe it’s because they can make easy comparisons. Or maybe it’s because they are often heroic figures. Whatever the reason, it’s been happening since the introduction of supporting categories in the earliest days of the awards ceremony. Tour our photo gallery above of every single man who has won the Best Supporting Actor category at the Academy Awards for playing a true life character.

The Academy this year must choose among heartless hitmen and sprinting soldiers, supportive sisters and depressed divorcees, action actors and comic book killers. Which of these will win best picture?
Data suggests there are many possible answers.
After all, this is the first year in Oscar history with four films receiving 10 or more nominations each. The previous record was three, shared by 1964 (Mary Poppins, Becket, My Fair Lady) and 1977 (Julia, The Turning Point, Star Wars). Each of this year's 10-plus-nominee contenders – Joker, 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — can make a compelling case for frontrunner status.

The family at the center of Freeform’s Party of Five reboot is definitely not closer to free, with a timely twist that finds the kids’ undocumented parents arrested and deported by Ice.
Hailing from original series creators Amy Lippman and Chris Keyser, Wednesday’s two-episode premiere kicks off with mom Gloria Acosta (Narcos: Mexico‘s Fernanda Urrejola) and dad Javier Acosta (Narcos‘ Bruno Bichir) very much in the picture, whereas the Fox drama followed the orphaned Salinger children. But there are still plenty of similarities to the original: The first Party of Five had Salinger’s restaurant, and in the Freeform version,...

Peter Wollen, film theorist and filmmaker, has died at the age of 81. Wollen is best known for writing the 1969 film theory book “Signs and Meaning in the Cinema,” which became famous for approaching film studies through structuralism and semiotics. “Signs and Meaning” was one of over two dozen film theory books Wollen wrote or contributed to over nearly four decades.
In the film industry itself, Wollen got his start by sharing a screenwriting credit on Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1975 drama “The Passenger,” starring Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider. Wollen made his directorial debut with “Penthesilea: Queen of the Amazons,” which he directed alongside his wife, legendary film scholar Laura Mulvey. The two made several films together. The only film to be solo-directed by Wollen was the 1987 science-fiction romance “Friendship’s Death,” starring Bill Paxton and Tilda Swinton. The latter played a female extraterrestrial robot who crash lands on earth and meets a British war correspondent.

Scarlett Johansson has never been nominated for an Oscar, not even for 2003’s “Lost in Translation,” Sofia Coppola‘s riff on her own failed marriage to fellow filmmaker Spike Jonze. In Netflix’s “Marriage Story,” Johansson similarly is caught up in a film about another director’s marial situation gone bad — namely, director Noah Baumbach‘s failed marriage to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.
It’s one thing to be suffocating in a relationship with priorities that lean in the direction of self-absorbed, unfaithful New York City theater director-husband (Adam Driver) — as is the case when it comes to Scarlett Johansson‘s actress and muse Nicole. But when she gets a chance to star in a TV pilot in Los Angeles and revive her career beyond her spouse’s stage productions, she decides to pursue a divorce. Yes, it puts her young son in the terrible spot of being a pawn in a broken union,...

Ever since she slinked her way onto the screen as a con woman who befuddles her targets with her luminous sex appeal in 1990’s “The Grifters,” Annette Bening has rarely been less than memorable on the big screen no matter the quality of the movie. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for that early career-making breakout performance, but lost to Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost.”
She has since collected a trio of Academy Award bids as a lead, starting with 1999’s “American Beauty”as a nagging suburban housewife who belittles and cheats on her husband (Kevin Spacey) as he suffers through a midlife crisis.
