Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • When Luke and Ben go in a bar there's loads of Aliens and creatures drinking and some smoking a pipe.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Obi-Wan allows himself to be killed during a duel. There is no blood or injury detail, since his body vanishes instantly, leaving only his cloak and weapon behind.
  • (at around 56 min) The Death Star ignites a planet, Alderaan, into an shock wave and giant explosion, killing the planet's entire population.
  • The burned and smoking skeletons of Owen and Beru Lars lying on the ground near the entryway to a small burning structure are visible by there stunned and horrified nephew, Luke Skywalker, after he has rushed home to their see about their well-being. They are not focused on and are quite easy to miss.
  • Han Solo is intercepted by Greedo pointing a laser gun at him, in an establishment. While conversing, they sit opposite of each other at a table there, and several times Greedo expresses intention to shoot Han dead. Throughout this time, Han has covertly drawn his own laser gun and, from his waist, obscuredly aimed it at Greedo. This is suspenseful. In the original version of the film, just as Greedo about make good on his aggressive words, space above the table explodes into a momentary cloud of smoke, and the alien's dead body is shown slumping forward onto the table, as he had been shot by Han. Whereas in Special and subsequent editions of the film, Greedo is shown to fire at but miss Han's head before being immediately shot dead by Han's return fire.
  • Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi engage in a fierce lightsaber duel with each other for some time. After seeing that the other heroes need to escape nearby, Obi-Wan allows himself to be killed, whereupon Vader decapitates him, only to find that his body disappears, leaving his cloak and lightsaber on the ground.
  • The death star ignites into an enormous shock wave and explosion that kills all lifeforms on board.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Darth Vader kills Obi Wan Kenobi. However, it is mitigated by the fact that Kenobi becomes a Force Ghost as suggested in his fight with Vader, and speaks to Luke at critical moments to help him.
  • Luke, Princess Lia, Han, and Chewie get trapped in a garbage room. The walls close in on them to crush the garbage. But luckily, none of them get crushed with the help of C-3P0.
  • In the garbage room scene, Luke is dragged into filthy water by a creature. He is saved by Han and Leia.
  • (At around 45 min) In the bar an alien's arm is removed with a light saber. Instead of cauderizing the wound, the arm is shown bloody and detached. This has been retconned and is because of the species of alien
