Dr. Strange is at this point one of the most notable characters in the MCU, and one of the most important. Despite his origin story being a bit more humble than today’s releases, he managed to perform strong and will be a huge part of the MCU going forward.
Even though Benedict Cumberbatch is by many fans considered to be the perfect Dr. Strange, it wasn’t always like that, the role was originally supposed to go to Joaquin Phoenix, but one decision altered the course of the MCU, and endangered ‘Doctor Strange’s’ box office since the role simply had to go to Cumberbatch.
In his recent Slash Film interview director of the origin movie, Scott Derrickson explained how Marvel Studios sacrificed the summer release to nab the popular actor. The studio went along with their proposal and it paid off in the long run.

Ray Chan, the art director and production designer for Marvel Studios who contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy, three Avengers movies, the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine and more, has died. He was 56.
Chan died Tuesday near his home in Wales, his family announced. No cause of death was divulged.
“Ray truly was one of the best, in so many ways,” they said. “He had an exuberance for life, which was tragically cut short and will be sorely missed. He loved his career and lived a rich and wonderful life, and his memory will live on through all those he knew and the films he helped make happen.”
Chan served as supervising art director on Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016) and the Avengers films Age of Ultron (2015), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).

Doctor Strange is not a new character for an average Marvel fan, but it was for a lot of fans who were unfamiliar with Marvel comics when the character was first brought to the screen in 2016. Co-written and directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange was a glorious success and was widely liked by fans and critics alike.
Doctor Strange (2016)
Yet while its sequel was an even bigger financial success, there were a lot of mixed reactions from fans who called it too dark for an MCU entry. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie was different than the first one. And recently Derrickson revealed how his version of the sequel was different than Raimi’s, making fans demand to get it made.

Heels has nailed its landing after Starz canceled the series in 2023. Netflix and Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group have agreed to a licensing agreement for the two seasons of critically-acclaimed drama from Mike O’Malley.
Deadline has learned there is an option for a third season, but that all depends on the availability of stars Stephen Amell, who booked the lead role in the Suits spinoff, and Alexander Ludwig, who’s toplining Earth Abides for MGM+. A spokesman for Lionsgate declined to comment.
Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Amell and Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those...

"Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness" can be best described as Sam Raimi at war with the corporate sensibilities of the MCU. On one hand, the movie is filled with fun, creative bits of Raimi-style high-effort filmmaking; there's a willingness to get spooky and mean in a way that feels fresh and unprecedented for the franchise. On the other hand, it's filled with forced moments that read so strongly as studio notes designed to pander to fans and set up future movies. Case in point: The Illuminati, a new group that includes John Krasinski's Reed Richards and Patrick Stewart's Professor X. Their inclusion is less of an organic storytelling choice and more of an advertisement for future MCU properties.
But part of what makes "MoM" so fun is that the Raimi sensibilities win out in the end. The moment Raimi wins is that scene where Wanda...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) remains one of the most hotly debated franchises despite the recent decline in form. The franchise is currently in its fifth phase and is building up steam in its Multiverse Saga, which will lead to the next Avengers movies. However, fans have often been critical of the direction Kevin Feige has taken with the newer phases of the MCU.
Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 3
On X (formerly Twitter), an avid fan pointed out the flaw in MCU’s current plan using Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man as an example. The fan made a compelling argument regarding the state of the MCU and the crisis it might face if Feige and his team do not rectify the situation. Most fans seemed to agree with the supposed flaw in Feige’s plan for the Multiverse Saga and here is what fans are saying on social media.

The past year for the MCU has been the worst that the franchise went through with one of its films flopping at the box office, something that had never happened before in its history. But when it comes to films not being liked by the audience, projects like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness alsocome to mind, a film that was released before last year.

Fans love the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many reasons, including the franchise's eclectic characters, its engagement with decades of comic book lore, and its willingness to flood the market with crossovers and surprise easter eggs. If Marvel films are nothing else, they are visual spectacles, a reason to go to the movie theater and see fantastical stories play out on the biggest screens possible. The franchise's visual effects are a big draw, allowing various Marvel filmmakers to create worlds and characters that wouldn't always be possible to shoot in the real world.
In fact, Marvel's intense process for developing visual effects has occasionally drawn criticism, both from VFX artists and the filmmakers at the helm of these movies. Director James Gunn, who made the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films, told Gizmodo that Marvel's VFX demands were occasionally difficult to work with, because not everything gets correctly worked out in pre-planning stages.

Inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Recently, I was watching Blumhouse's "Night Swim" and started thinking about all the strangest killer objects in the history of horror movies. "Where would a swimming pool rank on such a list," I pondered. "Would it rank lower or higher than a hungry bed?" These are the hard-hitting questions that race through my head, only eased by tasks like ranking all the craziest, head-scratchiest, most out-of-bounds killer objects in horror movie history.
We're not talking about flesh and blood killers or animal attackers. Even something like "Santa Jaws" is omitted from contention because while you could blame either the magical pen or sketchbook canvas that brings the Great White Santa to life, it's still a jingle-jangling shark gobbling up victims. This list is dedicated to deadly things that should not kill. Monstrous versions of household items that spring to life and slay the innocent with a most baffling reaction.

There are a lot of similarities between actor Robert Downey Jr. and his character Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. They're both smart-alecks with a history of substance abuse issues, they're both wildly talented, and they both are pretty darn proud. So when asked which movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) he thought was the best, one would assume that Downey would pick one of the "Iron Man" movies, or one of the "Avengers" movies at the very least, right? Wrong!
In the book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, the various Avengers discussed their picks for the "Best Marvel Movie Ever" and the man behind Iron Man had a pretty surprising pick that honestly feels close to impossible to argue with. After all, who knows the MCU better than the people at the very center of it -- and besides,...

What If? Season 2, episode 9, wrapped up with a fierce battle between Captain Peggy Carter, our newly introduced Avenger, Kahhori, and the main antagonist of the multiverse war. This episode is once again a continuation of the previous episode, which ended with Peggy drinking at a bar while Dr. Strange Supreme approached her. Episode 9 opened with Peggy Carter conversing with Dr. Strange, who sought her help on something he was working on. To achieve that, Dr. Strange Supreme needed Carter to kill a villain from an alternate universe, so Peggy agreed to help him. Peggy demanded to portal back to her home universe in exchange for help, but after she accompanied Dr. Strange to his destination, she recognized who the real villain of this universe was.

Movies might seem like magic, but Hollywood’s favorite actors, directors, producers, stunt performers, props masters, costumers, script coordinators, and cinematographers are still only human. Since before that child extra prematurely covered his ears for Eva Marie Saint shooting Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” audiences have delighted in finding the little moments that make their favorite films imperfect.
Like freckles on a human face, mistakes can make movies infinitely more special to the audiences that love them. Have you heard of a movie about a brilliant quantum physicist who travels to a remote location so he can test a groundbreaking theory that could change the world forever? It’s shot in breathtaking black-and-white, and features Nazis and a doomed romance.
If you’re thinking of Oppenheimer, you’re wrong by a good two decades (in terms of the time setting), as well as a good hundred million dollars (in terms of budget). And yet, like a smaller, distant cousin to the Christopher Nolan blockbuster, German director Timm Kröger’s The Theory of Everything (Die Theorie Von Allem) is also an artfully made, ambitious period piece where reality sometimes bends to the laws of modern physics.
However, the similarities end there. Nolan’s movie was science-fact, remaining as close to historic events as technically possible. Kröger’s second feature is more of a genre-jumping experiment, combining Hollywood sci-fi...

This past week we lost one of the industry’s best. As Dan Green pulls his chair up to the great drawing board in the sky I look back on an amazing career. For me, Dan Green was probably the first inker I knew the name of. This comes from hunting down my back issues of Wolverine. Marc Silvestri and Adam Kubert were two of my favourites to track down issues of and Green was always the third name in the credits. Perhaps this is doing inkers a discredit. They are like drummers in rock bands in that regard. Essential to creativity but one step behind the limelight. If someone like Joe Sinnott was like the old-school drumming of Ringo Starr, then Green is more akin to the style of John Bonham. In my opinion, he was the first rock star inker.
The journey began for Dan Green in Detroit.

Marvel ended up casting superstar Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character in Dr. Strange. But due to his personal connection with the film’s director, Ethan Hawke believed he was once wanted for the popular role.

There was a point where Hawke was keen on starring in a superhero project. The Training Day star couldn’t help notice how well-crafted the first Iron Man film was. After becoming a fan, he wondered what other veteran actors could do with similar roles. But he also felt committing to these superhero projects was a potential setback.
“So my point is I am totally open to doing something like that, [but] there’s a problem that comes along whenever Marvel’s gonna approach Joaquin [Phoenix] or me or anybody who’s in love with acting,...

Face front, true believers! Here’s an interesting lil’ tidbit about the current cinema landscape. Just who has been the major part of several huge box office hits over the last fifteen years? Well, we’re not talking about an actor, or a filmmaker, or a studio exec. Oh, and he left the planet almost five years ago. Okay, you got it, I’m talking about the comic book writing superstar who co-created almost the entire staple of Marvel superheroes. And he became a fun bit of business in the screen adaptations of those characters by popping up in brief cameo roles (I made it a game with my nephews to nudge me when he flashed that big grin). He’s been profiled by several TV newsmagazine shows and mini-bios, but now he’s getting the full feature-length documentary treatment with the simply titled Stan Lee. Excelsior!

General Zod is back, in action figure form! At least, that’s what it felt like to Michael Shannon, who plays Zod in the Dceu. Shannon’s Zod faced off with Henry Cavill’s Superman in Man of Steel, which ended badly for the Kryptonian General. But thanks to Barry Allen’s time travel shenanigans in The Flash, Shannon gets to reprise his role as Zod. And the famously plain-speaking actor isn’t terribly excited about it.
When asked by Collider how he felt returning to play the baddie, Shannon did not hold back. “Yeah. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor,” he admitted. “These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, “Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!” It’s not quite the in-depth character study situation that I honestly felt Man of Steel was.

This article contains Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse spoilers
Sony is giving the Marvel Cinematic Universe a run for its money, and much like there’s no stopping the ever-expanding multiverse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has weaved a complex web of Spider-People into the lives of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld).
While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu) struggles to find where it fits alongside the MCU, Across the Spider-Verse brings us one step closer to a unified Spider-Family. We’re a far cry from those feuds between Disney and Sony – where it looked like Tom Holland’s wall-crawling hero would be annexed – but that doesn’t mean both sides are quite agreeing on everything.

Robert Downey Jr. has already worked with Dr. Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But beyond their Marvel films, Downey couldn’t help feel a bit of jealousy towards the actor when watching him on another project.

Downey and Cumberbatch had more than the MCU in common. The two actors also portrayed different versions of iconic literary figure Sherlock Holmes. Downey played the character in 2009’s titular movie Sherlock Holmes and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Cumberbatch would play the character in the BBC mini-series Sherlock for four seasons.
In a 2014 interview with Collider, Cumberbatch explained that he was able to share notes about Sherlock with Downey.
“I sat down on the sofa with Robert Downey, Jr. last night, and we had our first conversation and shared notes on playing Sherlock Holmes.

Technically, the congregation of Spider-Men outside the pages of comics happened in the 90s animated series, but in 2018, when Sony released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it presented the scope of the multiverse to a larger fanbase, which eventually culminated in the fulfillment of the dream of seeing three live-action Spider-Men of our generation together in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Needless to say, when the second installment of the movie was announced, fans had pretty high expectations, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse didn’t disappoint a bit. If the first entry had shown a glimpse of the Spider-Verse to the audience, the second one opened a vista to the interconnected universe, displaying all the spider-madness it had to offer. Scattered among innumerable Spider-Character appearances, teases, references, and homages, there were plenty of Easter eggs in Across the Spider-verse, and although it’s not humanely possible to list every one of them,...

Earlier this month, Benedict Cumberbatch’s house was attacked by a former chef, Jack Bissell.
Bissell used to work for the Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair as a chef de parties until 2020. News of the attack was just made public this weekend.
The former chef used a fish knife to attack the house in North London while Cumberbatch, his wife Sophia Hunter, and their three children were inside.
Cumberbatch is well-known for his role as Sherlock on the BBC drama and as Dr. Strange in the Marvel movie series.
Bissell kicked through their front gate to gain access to the property and proceeded to shout threats including, “I know you’ve moved here, I hope it burns down.” He used the fish knife to pull out one of the plants from the property and threw it at their wall. Then he used the knife to pry the intercom off, which he...

Elizabeth Olsen has been a significant part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since her debut as Scarlet Witch. But when the character was handed over to the Russo Brothers, Olsen felt they weren’t sure how to approach the Avengers member.

Afterwards, Olsen was one of the main leads in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and continued the character’s growth throughout the franchise.
Whedon wouldn’t be involved with the character for long, however. After Age of Ultron, the Russo Brothers were in charge of guiding the MCU through the latter stages of its story. But when the directors...

Well, that’s awkward: We predicted a healthy $650 million box office for April and missed the mark — by a lot. The month’s total was $900 million, thanks to the overwhelming overperformance of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal), which initial projections placed at $250 million for its 24 days in April. (And even that felt optimistic.) “Smb” actually took in $491 million in the U.S./Canada for the period.
The rest of the month — holdovers “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) and “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount) added just under $150 million, and new releases “Air” (MGM) and “Evil Dead Rise” (Warner Bros. Discovery) combined for over $110 million — came in as expected.
April also introduced an unexpected question. As the summer season begins with the traditional Disney Marvel release, will “Smb” suggest a surge in expectations — or does it mean, with perhaps a $650 million domestic total, we’ve already seen the release of 2023’s top title?...

Mila Kunis denied rumors that she’ll be starring in Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot, but she did let slip that she knows who will be starring in the project.
During her appearance on CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Cordon” on Thursday, Kunis said flat-out she will not be appearing in “Fantastic Four,” and that the rumors stemmed from a lunch she had with director Matt Shakman.
“We went out to a deli and had lunch together,” Kunis said of her and Shakman’s meeting, “and the next day I was somehow in Fantastic Four.”
Kunis, who would presumably play Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, in the reboot (though some rumors are claiming she was also in talks to play a female version of The Thing), said the meeting was just a lunch, and that she will not be playing any of the four titular roles.

In Anthony and Joe Russo's 2018 superhero flick "Avengers: Infinity War," a genocide-focused space alien named Thanos (Josh Brolin) was hellbent on acquiring six all-powerful stones that, when assembled, could essentially grant any wish. Thanos, a military man, was deeply concerned about over-population and poor resource allocation throughout the universe. Because he was raised as a soldier and wasn't terribly imaginative, Thanos' only solution for said problems was to kill off half of the universe in a single instant. Hence his need for Infinity Stones.
Because the stones were ineffably mystical, acquiring them took some work. One of the stones would only be given to him, for instance, if he made a blood sacrifice by throwing a loved one off a cliff. He chose to murder Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), his adopted daughter. This angered and dismayed Peter (Chris Pratt) a.k.a. Star-Lord, the kind-of leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy,...

Marvel studios tried to recruit Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix for their cinematic universe a couple of times. Even though the two parties have yet to come to an agreement, Phoenix asserted he had nothing but respect for Marvel films.

Phoenix has recently entered the genre of superheroes by playing the Joker in Todd Phillips’ titular film about the iconic villain. But before that, his name was in possible consideration for several comic book properties.
Although Phoenix had yet to commit to a superhero feature until Phillips’ Joker, he shared he had a fascination with the sub-genre. He likened one aspect of comic book movies to theater work.
“There are different interpretations. It’s so interesting; I was just thinking about it today, it seems so unique in some ways to comic books. I think there’s probably room for that.

Imax CEO Richard Gelfond’s compensation for the latest fiscal year came to $8.03 million, just down from $9.08 million in fiscal 2021, according to a regulatory filing unveiled on Friday.
Gelfond’s base salary of $1.2 million last year was unchanged from what he received in 2021 and 2020 and again he received no bonus.
His overall compensation continues to come from stock awards, as Gelfond received $5.5 million in option awards last year, against $5.9 million in option awards received in 2021 as part of a three-year performance period. Gelfond also received $1.25 million in non-equity incentive plan compensation in 2022, against $1.9 million received in fiscal 2021.
Last year, Imax rode a rebound in Hollywood box office as the pandemic began to wane and the Toronto-based company screened tentpoles like The Batman, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Returning to “Across the Spider-verse,” which has two different versions of the second trailer released with a different beginning, we will discuss both in this brief analysis, and the rest of the trailer follows a similar narrative.

The film starred Reb Brown, also known in B-movie circles from "Yor, the Hunter from the Future,...
