Sex & Nudity

  • A few female characters wear low-cut dresses.
  • Madame duBarry is the King's mistress. A minor character is a prostitute.
  • A married woman sleeps with another man, depicted only in a single un-explicit shot of the two lying together.
  • An unofficially married couple are implied to have slept with each other. One shot portrays the two standing up while kissing naked, though nothing is shown.
  • A man assaults a woman, forcefully kissing her then pushing her onto a bed while she screams. He rips her shirt open (nothing is shown) before he regains his senses and shamefully withdraws.
  • One girl is speculated to have a crush on a woman. Nevertheless, she later falls in love with and marries a man.
  • A woman, attempting to save her own skin, accusing a woman of having many female lovers, though this is not true. She later writes books on these false accounts.
  • A drunken man asks a girl if she will spend the night with him, to which she promptly refuses. Later though, she stops a carriage and begs the officer inside to buy her for the night. This fails, but the girl never attempts prostitution again.
  • In the opening. the main character is shown naked a couple times, though mostly concealed by rose thorns.
  • A man forcefully pulls a woman's sleeves down off her shoulders so that she can be branded there.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is slashed in the eye with a sword. He clutches his eye and blood runs through his fingers.
  • Some bloody violence, not very graphic, but gritty and realistic. Use of swords, guns, clubs, cannons, tools, fists, and other weapons.

Profanity

  • Some mild language.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some drinking and smoking as well as a number of bar scenes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Implied deaths via guillotine, but none are graphically portrayed.
  • A man is brutally beaten by five others.
  • A mob numbering 200 overtakes a carriage and attacks a man and woman inside. The woman is rescued shortly, but the man is nearly hanged by the crowd.
  • A maid drinks poisoned wine and dies.
  • A woman comes down with tuberculosis and occasionally coughs up drops of blood.
  • A woman is branded on her shoulder in a public square. She screams and fights back viciously until she eventually passes out.
  • A girl waits in room for her sister when a man suddenly appears and drives her out with a whip.
  • On two different occasions, a child is shot from behind and killed.
  • An assassin poisons himself and dies.
  • A man dies of smallpox.
  • A large chandelier falls, nearly crushing two people.
  • A man almost executes his daughter and her servant.
  • A 7-year-old boy becomes gravely ill and dies.
  • A man is shot in the arm and an unusually large amount of blood is seen streaming down.
  • Along with the violence, there are several unsettling themes relating to slavery, famine, the killing of innocents, and overall tragedy.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A sickly woman is hit by a carriage and dies.
  • A man's sister is said to have hanged herself. He grieves by her dead body long after stench sets in. The situation is shocking and grotesque.
  • A man set a mansion on fire. He throttled an elderly woman before pushing her over the edge of a balcony into the flames.
  • An 11-year-old girl commits suicide by jumping off a tower.
  • A few of the main characters' deaths are very emotional.
