Filtered through her experience as an unequalled comic performer, writer-director Elaine May scores a bulls-eye with this grossly underappreciated gem, fashioned in a style that could be called ‘black comedy lite.’ And that’s the release version mangled by the producer. What might it have been if May had been allowed to finish her director’s cut?

It’s that time of year again. It’s the “Eye of The Storm,” that eerily calm time between the end of the French Open and the start of Wimbledon. It’s also time for our annual “Hot Guys of Tennis” post. In the past we’ve looked at the hottest players over 30, and counted down the top 20 ranked players, but this year we’re going to put all our balls on the court, and bring you the definitive Forty Hottest Tennis Players Of All Time!
There are two caveats – These are players from the Open Era of Tennis (sorry, Don Budge fans), and all of the players must have achieved a ranking of at least #25 on the Atp Tour. There have to be rules!
Three names you will not be seeing on this list are Andre Agassi, Janko Tipsarevic and Goran Ivanišević. Why? They’ve all made public homophobic comments,...

“The best way to handle women is to keep them pregnant and barefoot.”
“I don’t mind being called a male chauvinist pig as long as I’m the No. 1 male chauvinist pig.”
Sound like things Ron Burgundy might say? Close. Those were the choice quips of Bobby Riggs, the 1970s tennis hustler who baited top women pros into a series of lucrative “Battle of the Sexes” matches. In 1973, he famously lost to Billie Jean King in straight sets during a carnival-stunt spectacular that seems extremely ridiculous in hindsight but had enormous cultural implications at the time.

Actor and director who brought dark good looks and a commanding presence to his roles
Austrian by birth, Swiss by circumstance and international by reputation, Maximilian Schell, who has died aged 83, was a distinguished actor, director, writer and producer. However, he will be best remembered as an actor, especially for his Oscar-winning performance in Stanley Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) – an early highlight among scores of television and movie appearances. He also directed opera, worked tirelessly in the theatre and made six feature films, including Marlene (1984) - a tantalising portrait of Dietrich, his co-star in Judgment, who is heard being interviewed but not seen, except in movie extracts.
Schell courted controversy and much of his work, including The Pedestrian (1973), dealt with the second world war, its attendant crimes and the notion of collective guilt. In 1990, when he was offered a special award for his contributions to German film, he refused to accept it.

Despite its outward civility, Professional Tennis can be a brutal sport for the players, and the sell by date for most is around age 30, give or take a couple of years. So it takes a dedicated athlete to carry on in the face of Father Time, lingering injuries, and young phenoms nipping at your Nike's.
In the past couple of years we've paid tribute to the Atp Top Twenty Players and the Hottest Players Outside The Top 20, and as this year's Australian Open commences, we're going to look at all of the players in the Top 100 who have crossed the "30" milestone mark.
They may be the tennis equivalent of Methuselah, but they can still teach the young guns a thing or two!
Roger Federer - 31
Ranked #2, Roger is still going strong long after most pundits had written him off. Last year he won his seventh Wimbledon title and regained the #1 ranking,...

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

After causing “a minor stir” with his profile of Robert Evans in the mid-60s, Peter Bart—then a writer for The New York Times—unexpectedly jump-started their long-term friendship and partnership as film execs at Paramount. From his new memoir, Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, The Mob (And Sex) (Weinstein Books), Bart details his risky shift from journalism (later to return as editor-in-chief of Variety) and entrance into Hollywood—where, between 1967 and 1975, he helped release The Godfather, Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, Harold and Maude, and True Grit. Below, Bart recalls the first public screening of “the ultimate ‘date movie’”—Love Story. Listen to the podcast after the jump.
