Quotes

  • Inspector Zenigata : Damn! I was a step too slow! Lupin pulled off his theft!

Lady Clarisse de Cagliostro : No, he didn't steal anything. He fought for me.

Inspector Zenigata : No, ma'am. He stole something of no small value... your heart.

Lady Clarisse de Cagliostro : Yes, he did.

Inspector Zenigata : Well, then, I must be going...

  • Inspector Zenigata : [on TV]  What's that over there?

[He picks up a sheet of counterfeit money]

Inspector Zenigata : Oh, wow! These are Japanese bills! Counterfeit bills!

Interpol Secretary General : He's such a bad actor.

Fujiko Mine : [on TV]  This is an incredible revelation!

Inspector Zenigata : [to the camera, with an armful of bills]  Look, counterfeit money from all over the world. I came in after Lupin and found this terrible crime. What SHALL I do?

  • Inspector Zenigata : Lupin! Don't you dare die before I get to arrest you!

  • Lupin III : What say we make a temporary truce, until we get out of here?

Inspector Zenigata : Fine. But I won't aid and abet crooks. I'll arrest you when we escape, I guarantee it!

Lupin III : Terrific. Let's have a proper shake on it.

[He holds out his hand. Zenigata starts to hold out his own, but pulls away at the last second]

Inspector Zenigata : I won't become intimate with you!

    Lupin III : Good grief...

  • Inspector Zenigata : These are coffins!... What is this? These are 10,000-Yen bills! Is that what all of these are?

Lupin III : These are well made! Have a look, Old Man!

Inspector Zenigata : West German 1000-Mark bills!

Lupin III : Pounds! Dollars! Francs! Roubles! Rupees! Pesos! Crowns! Lira! Oh, and they've even got Won! All the world's currencies!

Inspector Zenigata : Lupin! Is this the secret of this castle? Counterfeiting?

Lupin III : That's right. This is the source of the Goat Money, which was valued above the real thing at one time. Since the upheavals in Medieval Europe, the mysterious counterfeit currency has been there, always squirming in the shadows. It brought about the collapse of the Bourbon Dynasty, and became the source of Napoleon's funds. It also triggered the worldwide panic of 1927. The Goat Money - the Black Hole - the star on the backstage of history. All those who tried to eliminate the heart of the problem were never heard from again.

Inspector Zenigata : I've heard the stories about it, but I never dreamed that an independent nation was running it...

Lupin III : What are you gonna do, Old Man? You can't turn your back on it, now that you've seen it.

Inspector Zenigata : I know. It would shame my policeman's blood.

  • Lupin III : Hurry up, Old Man! We're gonna have company soon!

Inspector Zenigata : Evidence! I need evidence!

  • [last lines]

Lupin III : Oh, no! It's the Old Man again!

Inspector Zenigata : Lupin! I'll get you this time for sure!

  • Inspector Zenigata : I figured this was no ordinary castle, but a secret worth going this far to keep... Is that what you're after, too?

[Lupin hands Zenigata his cigarette. The Inspector takes a puff of it]

Lupin III : The one who's up to that is Fujicakes. I just hope she doesn't end up joining the dearly departed. Anyway, making a fuss isn't going to get us anywhere.

[He rolls onto his side and drifts off to sleep]

    Lupin III : Goodnight, Pops.

[Zenigata, cigarette in mouth, stares thoughtfully ahead in silence]

  • Inspector Zenigata : I want to see the Count immediately.

[Two guards stand at the castle entrance with spears crossed]

Inspector Zenigata : Did you hear me? Let me through!

Gustav : Give it up. Only those deemed trustworthy are permitted beyond this point.

Inspector Zenigata : What? Are you saying the ICPO can't be trusted?

Gustav : I believe you have been ordered to withdraw. Please take your leave.

Inspector Zenigata : How did you know about that?

Gustav : We can deal with the likes of Lupin without the help of you Orientals. Now, leave.

Inspector Zenigata : [grudgingly resigned]  I see. I understand.

  • Inspector Zenigata : [presenting the counterfeit money]  Please order me to move against them! We have all this indisputable evidence! I saw it myself! A whole row of state-of-the-art printing presses,

Interpol Secretary General : I know that!

    [Zenigata blinks, dumbfounded]

Interpol Secretary General : This is a highly political problem. Our jurisdiction at Interpol is limited to international crimes.

Inspector Zenigata : Secretary General, it is clear that this is criminal!

French Delegate : You just don't get it. We're talking about a sovereign state and a member of the UN. Even Interpol cannot conduct a compulsory investigation.

West German Delegate : Not only that, but the situation is exceedingly unfavorable for us. Did you see this photo that's on the front page of every newspaper around the world? The bravery of the Count, who personally protected his bride. "Lupin Fails to Abduct Princess Clarisse".

British Delegate : They also say, "Lupin's Accomplice Disguised as Zenigata".

Inspector Zenigata : That was all me, the real McCoy.

Japanese Delegate : That's problematic. As an active duty police officer, that was imprudent of you.

Inspector Zenigata : [losing his patience over the stupidity of the situation]  I believe I reported what really happened!

American Delegate : The issue is here, which side the public will believe.

French Delegate : We stand no chance, surely.

Soviet Delegate : The Count supposedly has a lot of political friends in the West. I imagine many countries would have a problem if the truth was revealed.

American Delegate : Exactly! In point of fact, there's proof that a certain country ordered a massive quantity of counterfeit US dollar bills!

Soviet Delegate : And these fake rubles weren't ordered by your CIA?

[the room erupts into bickering. Head bowed, Zenigata glares at the commotion, helpless]

  • Inspector Zenigata : [saluting]  I'm Zenigata of the International Criminal Police Organization. It was reported that you received an advance notice from Lupin, and that is why I am here.

Count Cagliostro : You mean that petty thief who's third-generation Arsene Lupin or whatever? Is Interpol in the habit of disturbing people's breakfasts for such things?

[Zenigata scowls at the Count's rude response]

Inspector Zenigata : Your Excellency, Lupin is not to be underestimated. If he says he'll come, he will, without fail. There are five days until your nuptials. I insist that you allow us to patrol your castle.

[Without looking up, the Count rings a bell]

Count Cagliostro : We have police in this country, too, you know. Though we refer to them more elegantly as gendarmes.

[a massive guard appears beside Zenigata]

    Gustav : You called, sir?

Count Cagliostro : Gustav, co-operate with this Japanese man.

    [He addresses Zenigata]

    Count Cagliostro : You're dismissed.

Inspector Zenigata : Yes, sir! One more thing, Your Excellency. Please tell me why that scoundrel Lupin would be after your bride.

Count Cagliostro : [narrowing his eyes]  Who knows? Isn't investigating that part of your job as well?

[Zenigata scowls again, but tries to keep calm]

Inspector Zenigata : Please excuse me.

  • Inspector Zenigata : [kicking the asses of the Count's staff]  Don't underestimate the Metropolitan Police!

  • Inspector Zenigata : Lupin, what in the world is the deal with this horde of dead bodies? It doesn't strike me as a gravesite.

Lupin III : [cigarette in mouth]  Take a look at the wall there.

[Zenigata crawls over to the wall and, turning on his lighter, sees the epitaph the Japanese spy carved on it]

    Inspector Zenigata : This is...

[He sits reverently and addresses the dead spy]

Inspector Zenigata : May you rest in peace.

  • Inspector Zenigata : [being insulted over the phone]  Police officers are not boot-licking lackeys!
