So slow I think it actually stopped
Talia Shire is attacked and sexually assaulted in her apartment. A few days later, she takes a cab to work and the driver is her assailant. (Worth noting that this rather extraordinary coincidence is never explained.) He claims what the audience already knows. He was paid to assault her. The police don't follow up on this claim of his.
Shire's friend Elizabeth Ashley is secretly a lesbian and she paid him to assault her and record it. Now she's sort of stalking Shire while Shire moves into a new apartment and romances cop Joe Cortese who is investigating the assault.
This may seem like a major spoiler, but the film lets you know in the first 15 minutes that Ashley is the real villain, and you can pretty plainly see her on the poster accosting Shire with a knife. This is just one of the film's major missteps.
This film is the only directorial effort from cinematographer Gordon Willis, and the film looks utterly gorgeous. That and it's Ennio Morricone score are what it has going for it. It's also an unbelievably slow film in which very little happens, and no real suspense is generated because you know who the villain is. When she's finally revealed to Shire, they talk for 20 minutes and the film's over.
