Key highlights this February on the essential, alternative streaming service Arrow include a second season of films from the legendary Brazilian director José Mojica Marins, a devilish double-bill from Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia, a season of wonderfully weird short films, Valentine’s Day done Arrow-style, and much more.
In February, Arrow presents a season of bite-sized shocks in the form of the very best wild and weird short films, including Smile, the extraordinarily imaginative and disturbing award-winning short from director Joanna Tsanis; as well as The Wyrm of Bwlch Pen Barras, a Welsh language folk horror film about modern Wales, rooted in the country’s rich mythology, shot on 16mm and featuring a score by Cian Ciaran and Dafydd Ieuan from The Super Furry Animals; and ab adaptation of the famous short story by W.W. Writer, director, and actor José Mojica Marins singlehandedly inaugurated Brazilian horror cinema in 1964 when he released At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. This surprisingly gruesome gothic concoction introduced unsuspecting audiences to the indelible figure of Coffin Joe, a nefarious undertaker with a black top hat and cape, uncannily long fingernails, and a bloodthirsty life philosophy that’s part Friedrich Nietzsche, part Marquis de Sade. Over the next four decades, Coffin Joe would not only headline his own official trilogy but also turn up as a sometimes secondary character in numerous other films and TV shows, ultimately achieving the status of a national icon often called “the Brazilian Freddy Krueger.”
Arrow Video has assembled 10 of Mojica’s films in their staggeringly appointed new box set Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe. All of these titles have received striking new 4K restorations from original film elements, and Arrow has included many hours of bonus materials,...

Brazilian horror legend José Mojica Marins passed away in 2020, and a few months ago Arrow Video announced that they’re honoring the memory of “The Master” by bringing ten of his films to Blu-ray in a limited edition collector’s set that’s packed with special features! The original street date for the set, which is called Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe, was in November, but it has since moved to January 15th. Copies can be pre-ordered through the Arrow Video website. Copies are also available through Amazon, Zavvi, and hmv in the UK and DiabolikDVD, Grindhouse Video, and Zavvi in North America. To preview the set, Arrow Video has unveiled a trailer for it (our friends at Bloody Disgusting got the first look at it), and you can check that out in the embed above.

Considered by many to be “Brazil’s Freddy Krueger,” the horror icon known as Coffin Joe was played by the late José Mojica Marins, who wrote, directed and starred in a series of outrageous movies from 1964 to 2008. They’re collected together for an Arrow Video Blu-ray set that was announced earlier this year, fittingly titled Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe.
The 6-disc Blu-ray set will be available on Blu-ray and available to stream on Arrow from January 15, 2024, and you can exclusively watch the official trailer down below!
“Newly restored from the best available elements and packed with extras, Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe is a love letter to one of the great iconoclasts of horror who forged his films in the face of military dictatorship and religious censorship to become Brazil’s national Boogeyman.”
