Ridley Scott's Alien set a new standard in horror by bringing the genre to outer space. Scott never made another horror movie after Alien, opting for more sci-fi or historical genres. Despite his success, Scott's lack of horror films should be considered a missed opportunity.
Alien (1979) is undoubtedly one of the most iconic horror movies of all time, but it also highlights the biggest waste of Ridley Scott's career. The entire Alien franchise is packed full of chilling moments, and to this day, Alien's on-screen deaths are some of the best-known scenes in horror history. Scott clearly has an inherent understanding of what makes a successful horror movie. He achieved all of this in only his second feature film, and it immediately propelled him to mainstream success while also redefining the genre.

"Dune: Part Two" has officially become a commercial success, passing huge box office milestones and creeping towards the $600 million mark worldwide. Director Denis Villeneuve has thus proven wrong those who said Frank Herbert's celebrated "Dune" novel was "unfilmable," especially when you consider the critical response in conjunction with those box office numbers. "Dune: Part Two" might be a bleak blockbuster, but it's so far managed a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similarly impressive 95% audience score.
It's safe to say, then, that Villeneuve's epic sci-fi sequel is not only a critical and commercial success but perhaps even a box office savior. Back in February, prior to the film's March debut, /Film's Ryan Scott noted that movie ticket sales were down 15% compared to the same point in 2023, and there's not a movie fan out there who isn't aware of the industry's post-pandemic struggles. Robert Hloz’s debut is a competent copy of Hollywood sci-fi, but it’s too heavily indebted to its influences to develop its own philosophy
Apparently the first sci-fi film from the Czech Republic in 40 years, this so-called Czech Blade Runner is actually equally indebted to Minority Report (whose domestic futurism continues to be quietly influential). Like Tom Cruise’s character in Steven Spielberg’s film, detective Em Trochinowska (Andrea Mohylová) is a cop prone to brooding over clips of an absent loved one. Her concert pianist husband was murdered by members of the Rivers of Life terrorist group, who are outraged by the nature-flouting “restoration” technology that allows any recently snuffed person to be resurrected.
Bad news for those who don’t clear out their inboxes regularly: the technology only works if you have bothered to upload your memories within the last 48 hours. Where Minority Report riffed on the notion of pre-crime,...

Book-to-film adaptions are always a hit or miss. With this year's highly anticipated Dune: Part Two rising to the challenge, it's a must to remember the competitive standard that was set for the sci-fi genre decades ago. Blade Runner (1982), one of the greatest science fiction movies to ever grace the silver screen, brought to life Philip K. Dick's 1968 dystopian novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Directed by atmospheric director Ridley Scott, Blade Runner marked the start of a grand era of sci-fi in Hollywood and inspired generations of films, TV shows, anime, and games to follow in its footsteps.

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, while considered a masterpiece, sparked a trend of revisiting sci-fi films, which has negatively impacted his reputation. Blade Runner has multiple cuts, with the Final Cut being considered the ultimate version where Scott had complete creative control. While the constant tinkering with Blade Runner improved the film, Scott's return to the Alien franchise with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant was a mistake.
While 1982's Blade Runner is a classic, it nonetheless set a trend for Ridley Scott's sci-fi movies that has arguably harmed his career. Scott is considered one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, and Blade Runner could be regarded as his magnum opus. However, with the film, Scott set a precedent that had an unfortunate effect on another entry in the director’s lengthy back catalog.

Few heroes hold the cultural prestige of Batman. The Dark Knight’s persona, pursuit of justice, and iconic silhouette have cemented him as a mainstay in all of fiction. Batman is mostly linked only to Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy who dons the cowl by night.

Harrison Ford has been a leading man in the industry for more than 40 years. The actor has been a part of many iconic and acclaimed films that have shaped him as an actor. In addition to Han Solo in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, films like Witness, Blade Runner, Presumed Innocent, The Fugitive, and Air Force One made him a huge movie star back in the day.

Despite being one of the most respected figures in the industry, some actors have expressed their underwhelming working experience with the actor, including Brad Pitt. Another one of his co-stars also voiced his complicated professional relationship with Ford.

The noir genre has been booming in popularity since the 1940s, and it's easy to see why. Ever since Humphrey Bogart made his debut as the snarky detective Sam Spade in John Huston’s classic crime thriller The Maltese Falcon, audiences have been enamored by hard-boiled mysteries that peek into the seedy underbelly of society. Often using cynicism and intricately-laden MacGuffins to comment on the era of their release, great noir films have evolved and intertwined with many other genres. The most famous may in fact be Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic Blade Runner, which retrofitted the structure of a classic “sleuth story,” yet set it in a sprawling urban metroplex that mirrored what current society could look like in a few generations. While it was largely underseen during its initial release window, the science fiction mystery film Reminiscence is a futuristic noir that may be far from Blade Runner's iconic status,...

Sci-fi & fantasy often blend, but essential distinctions separate them. Sci-fi explores possibilities, while fantasy explores impossibilities. Dune & Star Wars both blend sci-fi & fantasy elements in their storytelling. They build imaginative worlds with futuristic and mystical aspects. Avatar, Thor: Ragnarok, Godzilla, Hellboy, & other films mix sci-fi & fantasy themes to create unique cinematic experiences.
Many sci-fi films combine the genre with fantasy elements, and some stand out for seamlessly blending them. Sci-fi and fantasy are often considered to go hand in hand, as some of the biggest titles in sci-fi, like Star Wars and Dune, could also be considered fantasy. However, essential distinctions separate the genres. Science fiction is a genre that explores real possibilities for humankind, exploring concepts like advanced technology, dystopian societies, and space travel. They're speculative "What if?" stories, exemplified by many of the best sci-fi movies of all time, like Blade Runner or 2001: A Space Odyssey.

One of cinema's most prolific and cherished character actors has died just short of his 89th birthday. M. Emmet Walsh, memorable in so many films including Blade Runner, Blood Simple and more recently, Knives Out, was 88 when he died on Tuesday.
Born in 1935 in Ogdensburg, New York, Walsh was raised in Vermont. He kicked off his acting career in typical fashion, with guest roles in TV series in the 1960s and 70s, but unlike some of his peers, he continued to juggle big and small screen gigs throughout his life. He had a personal credo about the work: "I approach each job thinking it might be my last, so it better be the best work possible. I want to be remembered as a working actor. I’m being paid for what I’d do for nothing."
Cinematically, he got his start via uncredited roles in the likes of Midnight Cowboy,...

Michael Shannon has done his fair share of high-budget films, like Man of Steel, but the actor has not shied away from doing smaller projects either. However, working on a particular project allowed the actor to meet one of the industry greats, something he likened to being a ‘dream’.

A Little White Lie is a cerebral literary thriller film, revolving around Shannon’s character, who is a down-on-his-luck handyman who gets mistaken for a celebrity writer. The film had a box office run of only $22,482 (via Box Office Mojo), but that does not mean the cast was not stuffed with talented artists of the industry, one that Shannon couldn’t believe he was working with: M. M. Emmet Walsh is dead at the age of 88, his manager Sandy Joseph told IndieWire. M. Emmet Walsh, the wily character actor who became an audience favorite for his deliciously despicable performances in such films as Blood Simple, Blade Runner, Brubaker and The Jerk, has died. He was 88.
Walsh died Tuesday in St. Albans, Vermont, his longtime manager, Sandy Joseph, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause was cardiac arrest.
With his distinctive lumbering form and droll delivery, Walsh was an ideal supporting player. A master of off-kilter comic delivery and dogged edginess, he excelled at roles that dwelled in the darker corners of humanity. No matter whom he played, he made a colorful impact.

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

In Ridley Scott’s 1982 “Blade Runner,” Walsh was Harrison Ford’s LAPD boss, while he played the vicious private detective Loren Visser in the Coen brothers’ directing debut “Blood Simple.” Wearing a sickly yellow suit, Pauline Kael said he was the film’s “only colorful performer. Sci-fi movies of the 1980s are known for their unique style, wacky music, and engaging tales with apocalyptic themes. The 1984 film Dune, although received mixed reviews, became a cult classic with its surreal imagery and ensemble cast. Movies like Aliens, The Terminator, and Blade Runner from the 1980s significantly influenced the sci-fi genre and raised the bar for storytelling and special effects.
Sci-fi movies are often some of the most creative in cinema, and the 1980s saw some of its biggest and best titles released. Sci-fi movies have been around almost as long as the film format has, engaging audiences through dramatic stories, inhuman characters, and creepy, unsettling atmospheres. The world of entertainment has seen many unfortunate incidents when an actor reportedly lost a role due to one thing or another. While actors like Emily Blunt lost a Marvel role due to contractual obligations, Mahershala Ali, on the other hand, lost a very amazing opportunity due to Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Blade.

While Blade seems to be forever struck by developmental delays and whatnot, Ali could have been Lt. Jim Gordon in Matt Reeves’ The Batman had it not been for it. With a sequel for the Robert Pattinson starter flick already in the works, it seems unfortunate that Ali lost on such an incredible opportunity.

Harrison Ford is one of the most talented and respected actors in Hollywood. Having starred in some of the most well-known franchises of all time, he has injected himself into the very bones of the film industry as a whole. If there was a film that starred him in some or the other role, there was a high likelihood that it was a hit.
The Fugitive
However, there was one movie of his that ended up becoming quite underrated, getting lost in the flashing lights of his filmography. One that got multiple Oscar nominations. Ford’s 1993 movie, The Fugitive was iconic to say the least, being an excellently told story about a man who was wrongfully accused of killing his wife.

Science fiction movies allow action stars to explore different themes and show a different side to themselves. Sci-fi action movies can elevate stunts to larger-than-life levels with outlandish scenarios and fictional elements. Action stars like Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have successfully delved into sci-fi genres.
There is a lot of overlap between action and sci-fi movies, meaning that some iconic action heroes have also become sci-fi legends. Action stars often get typecast and relegated to repeating the same roles over and over again, but this is usually unfair. There are plenty of action stars with remarkable dramatic talents, even if they don't always get the chance to show it. Sci-fi movies can be a great way for action stars to show a slightly different side to themselves. They can still give audiences big stunts, but they can also grapple with different themes.
Sci-fi action movies take action to new heights.

While J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels are considered the epic fantasy work of the 20th century, Frank Herbert’s Dune is considered the epitome of sci-fi novels around the same period. Many might have noticed some similarities in the themes of both these groundbreaking works of fiction but most fans don’t know that Tolkien absolutely hated Herbert’s influential novels.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels were peak works in the 20th-century fantasy genre
Tolkien openly talked about this hatred in a letter to a friend. However, he didn’t mention the reason behind his dislike for Herbert’s work. Many speculate that Tolkien’s opinion about Dune stemmed from how the novel handled its religious theme as opposed to Lord of the Rings.

The theatrical cut of Blade Runner is best for new viewers, offering clarity through Deckard's narration. The Final Cut and Director's Cut are more ambitious and compelling, diving deeper into the story's themes. While the theatrical cut is easier to follow, it lacks the enigmatic ending that adds to the movie's cult status.
While the debate over which version of Blade Runner is best will rage on forever, one argument reveals which cut is the best to watch first. Released in 1982, Blade Runner confounded critics and disappointed at the box office. However, in the years that followed, the ambitious sci-fi neo-noir gained a cult following and eventually became recognized as a classic. Like The Shining before it, Blade Runner went on to be considered an uncontested masterpiece, and its harsh original reviews were written off when critics reappraised director Ridley Scott's offbeat adaptation of Philip K Dick’s novel.

The Academy Awards often overlook many deserving directors due to the limited number of nominations each year. The lack of diversity in Best Director winners highlights the need for a more inclusive recognition system. Success and recognition can still be achieved without an Oscar win, as many legendary directors have proven.
Christopher Nolan is now an Oscar-winner, but there are plenty of great directors still working today who must continue to wait for their recognition from the Academy. Nolan was previously nominated for Dunkirk, but he can consider himself unlucky to have been overlooked for Interstellar, Inception and Memento, among others. There are only five nominations each year for Best Director, so many great directors miss out. Some of the best directors of all time went their entire careers without winning the Oscar for Best Director, including Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, and Stanley Kubrick.

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One paid homage to some of the world’s most iconic pop culture IPs. Based on the book by Ernest Cline, the film had some key changes, inculcating several IPs that were not present in the novel. Blade Runner's slow pace may be contemplative, but feels boring on rewatch in a faster-paced movie era. Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard lacks complexity, making the protagonist unlikable compared to the villain. Blade Runner's heavy focus on stunning visuals and effects overshadows its lack of depth in storytelling and characters.
Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is a hugely influential masterpiece of sci-fi cinema, but rewatching it today, 42 years after its initial release, it’s not all roses. Adapted from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, Blade Runner takes place in a dystopian, futuristic Los Angeles full of escaped cyborg slaves known as “replicants,” who have infiltrated human society. Harrison Ford stars as Rick Deckard, a grizzled detective who’s sent to identify the replicants and terminate them. Along the way, he begins to see that robots have feelings, too, and even questions his own humanhood.
