- A woman gives premature birth to a baby. There is nothing shown.
- A woman breastfeeds another woman's baby. Her breasts are completely seen.

- A young girl, elderly man, mailman and dog; including a mother and her baby, have their eyes melted out as they evaporate from nuclear heat after a bomb is dropped on Hiroshima. A woman falls as she is separated from a house while it crashes onto three members of a family. While being at least a few seconds long, this scene is very frightening and disturbing. During this, a lot of people are either hurt and/or killed as the destruction progresses.
- A boy sees zombie-like nuke victims walking around the streets of Hiroshima.
- There is a closeup shot of maggots sucking puss out of two living persons' arms.
- A girl is seen dead with her face half burned, with blood on the corner of her mouth and her left eye missing.
- A soldier defecates and vomits a great deal of blood. He also loses his hair. This is the most graphic scene in the entire film.
- A man and his other two children are crushed to death as they are trapped under burning beams of a house.
- A man is seen almost completely bandaged up with his face partially showing and he is covered in maggots.
- An elderly man slaps a boy several times. When he slaps him a third time, droplets of blood come out of his nose.

- This film, just like "Grave of the Fireflies", is meant to show the horrors of war, and the nuclear bomb scene is not only very graphic, but also extremely terrifying and disturbing.

- Just after the bomb explosion, we see several heavily irradiated people, including a few women who are seen topless (nothing inappropriate) at 35:33.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- In the middle of the film, after Gen's baby sister is born, he and a little kid go out to get milk. They don't have enough money so they get a job, after getting payed they run home with milk in their hands. As the scene plays out we get a back and forth of Gen and kid singing happily and the mother crying. Once they get home, they see their mother in tears revealing that the newborn baby died from malnutrition.
- Early in the film, Gen's brother, father and sister die horribly in a fire caused by the nuke. While Gen desperately tries to save his family we hear his brother cry for help loudly in the background. He then dies after Gen and his mom narrowly escape the fire.
- There is grim content throughout, which could frighten viewers. The bombing of Hiroshima and aftermath of it is depicted in an upsetting and horrific manner. One of the most heartbreaking scenes is when a newborn baby starves to death.
