A local legend tells that King Bermudo of León sent the young Pelayo to distract the Moor Almanzor for a few days in order to escape from him. The clever Pelayo entertained Almanzor for five days, but when the Moor learned of the trick, he killed him. From that moment on, Pelayo became a martyr and saint.
