JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” The 1984 classic Gremlins is a movie that never gets old! Steven Spielberg produced it, Joe Dante directed…and Chris Columbus who wrote Home Alone and directed first Harry Potter movie? He wrote Gremlins too! Talk about a talented crew. Zach Galligan – the main guy in Gremlins – was recently at a Gremlins Comic-Con Northeast 2024 panel, and he shared a hilarious story. When he first saw the finished movie with his co-star, Phoebe Cates, he was a little confused. He was expecting a dark, action-heavy film, but Gremlins ended up being way more zany and fun. When we talk about lost films, most people immediately think of silent movies, cinema on nitrate that either went up in flames or was in the hands of studios who didn't see the value in preserving it. Although we've come a long way in terms of film preservation since then, there are still plenty of films from the second half of the 20th century that may not be technically "lost," but are nearly impossible to track down and actually watch. They may have been put out on comparatively low-quality VHS back in the day, but not a peep since then -- these films never got a DVD or Blu-ray release, and aren't available on any of the streaming services.
If you're lucky, you might be able to find a grainy, unsanctioned VHS transfer on an unauthorized YouTube account, but even then, there's a lack of permanency, since they could be...

Review: Filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner is best known for his wild and crazy zombie movies Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, which blended inspiration from Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead to tell the story of a unique zombie outbreak where the living dead have flammable blood and exhale methane. The 1980s was truly a golden era for Gooey Cinema (trademark pending). It wasn't just hard-r horror pictures like David Cronenberg's "The Fly" or Chuck Russell's "The Blob"; from the sheer variety of slimes in the original "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II" to Marty (Martin Casella) hallucinating peeling bloody wads of skin off his face in "Poltergeist", filmmakers were always finding excuses to cover the screen -- and their actors -- with ooze or invent horrifying creatures they could blow up into chunks of gunk à la the "Gremlins" microwave scene.
So, naturally, when the Duffer Brothers got the green light for their '80s sci-fi horror pastiche "Stranger Things," the pair were eager to create all manner of goo-coated monstrosities like the ones they loved growing up. There was just one problem: As one of the show's visual effects supervisors, Martin Pelletier, explained to Vulture in 2019, covering your...

The project, which is penned by The Mash Report’s Tim Telling, follows two pest controllers who are called to an eco-café in a country park to investigate what begins as a routine vermin problem but as nightfall approaches an avalanche of deranged squirrels descend, wreaking revenge and mayhem on the staff and visitors in the park. With many fatalities, the survivors take shelter in the café as a freak storm takes out the power and communications leaving them isolated and under attack. An eclectic mix of survivors include pest controllers, a sulky teenager, hypocritical vegans, and a drug dealer – there is only an outside chance of survival.

Get in, loser, we're bringing back the horror/comedy. Recent attempts to find our next great, mainstream-friendly horror franchise have mostly involved such uninspired efforts as Disney's "Haunted Mansion" remake and, most recently, the news that Hollywood is giving "The Blob" another shot. This time, however, no lesser talents than horror legends Joe Dante and Roger Corman are teaming up to reboot the classic 1960 film "The Little Shop of Horrors." Even the most ardently anti-remake fan out there would have to admit that this feels like a win-win.
The exciting news comes courtesy of Deadline, which reports that this "reimagining" is meant to kickstart a whole new franchise, a phrase that would surely cause a shiver to run down the spine of anyone who witnessed something like Universal's "Dark Universe" gambit flame out in spectacular fashion ... if it weren't for the filmmakers involved on this project, that is. Dante will direct the reboot,...

Exclusive: Iconic filmmakers Joe Dante and Roger Corman are teaming with Emmy-nominated veteran producer Brad Krevoy, CEO of Mpca, on Little Shop of Halloween Horrors, a reboot of Corman’s famed 1960 horror comedy, Little Shop of Horrors.
A reimagining intended to jumpstart a new franchise, Little Shop of Halloween Horrors will be directed by Dante, from a script by Charles S. Haas (Gremlins 2: The New Batch), with Corman and Krevoy co-producing. Also joining the project is independent producer Charles Cohen, who previously worked at T-Street, where he oversaw and executive produced the Republic Pictures release Snack Shack, in addition to developing other projects for the company.
Originating as a low-budget genre flick directed by Corman and co-starring a young Jack Nicholson, the first Little Shop of Horrors quickly cemented itself as a cult classic following its release in 1960. Shot on a shoestring budget, pic tells the...

Best known for his contributions to the iconic Gremlins and Star Wars franchises, actor Mark Dodson has passed away this week at the age of 64, Deadline reports today.
Mark Dodson memorably voiced the character Salacious Crumb in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and he also did uncredited zombie voice work for George Romero’s Day of the Dead.
Dodson’s unique voice acting skills were put to excellent use in both Joe Dante’s Gremlins and sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, with the actor voicing multiple Gremlins characters.
It was Dodson’s voice work as Salacious Crumb in Return of the Jedi that led to him voicing the Gremlins, which were seen as being similar to the Salacious Crumb character.
Speaking of his work in the Gremlins franchise in a 2023 chat with the YouTube channel Diabolic Shrimp (watch the full video below), Mark Dodson explained his contributions:

In his book “The Films in My Life,” director and enthusiast François Truffaut wrote, “I demand that a film express either the joy of making cinema or the agony of making cinema.” Juan Pablo Reinoso’s new documentary “Mad Props” satisfies Truffaut’s criteria beautifully, expressing not only the joy of making cinema but also the joy of watching cinema, exploring both through the eyes of Tom Biolchini, an Oklahoma banker who obsessively collects movie props. Reinoso follows Biolchini as he travels the world meeting other collectors who lovingly display their acquisitions, everything from Indiana Jones’ whip to various title characters from Joe Dante‘s “Gremlins” to an entire house from “The Outsiders” purchased by House of Pain’s Danny Boy O’Connor and filled with artifacts from that Francis Coppola classic. As the film progresses, Reinoso broadens his scope to include interviews with actors and various prop and creature makers...

Every town seems to have that one house. The one that children walk by with hushed tones and dare each other to sneak onto the porch or ring the doorbell of. In the movies it’s the Myers House, 1428 Elm (at least in the later movies), or the House on Neibolt Street—usually run down and harboring a frightening history. In my neighborhood growing up, it was not a dilapidated old house, just one that seemed very out of place among the homes of the working class that surrounded it. It was a huge two-story white house, buttressed with gigantic pillars, and surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. I never saw anyone come in or out and I always wondered who lived there. In my mind it was a rich old Mrs. Deagle from Gremlins type, and I wondered, “what’s going on in there?” That question is the engine that...

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Horror in the High Desert
One of the most fruitful uses of found footage in recent memory, Horror in the High Desert is a pseudo-documentary chronicling the bizarre events that stem from the 2017 disappearance of a hiker in the Nevada wilderness.
Writer-director Dutch Marich achieves verisimilitude with smart direction and authentic performances. In classic true crime doc fashion, information is strategically unveiled to maximize impact. The methodical pacing pays off with an incredibly unnerving final 15 minutes of found footage. You’ll immediately want to follow it up with the equally effective sequel, Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva, also on Screambox.

We all know the three rules of mogwai: don’t expose it to sunlight, don’t get it wet and don’t feed it after midnight. While that third point is up for debate as to its interpretation, one thing that isn’t is the desire for a third Gremlins movie – at least to its original star, Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in both the 1984 movie and its 1990 sequel, The New Batch. With animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai proving to be a hit, maybe Galligan is right in his call for Gremlins 3.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Galligan said that the studio must have a plan for the Gremlins franchise if they have invested more time and money into Secrets of the Mogwai. “I can’t really figure out why Warner Bros. would do two seasons – not one, but two seasons – of the animated series, and spend a lot of money on it,...

For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

If your idea of a laugh riot is a high-school dreamboat being separated from his penis by an axe while treacly ‘80s classic “On the Wings of Love” soars on the soundtrack, then Lisa Frankenstein might be for you. But Zelda Williams’ clunky direction soon stifles that good will as this retro-minded horror-comedy-romance lurches from scene to scene without ever building much steam.
Focus is positioning the release as a Valentine’s Day date movie for young audiences who like a touch of graveyard humor and gore with their canoodling. Maybe they’ll get a kick out of its garish candy colors,...

The commercial space tug Halloweenies is scheduled for detonation, but not until they’re done discussing Ridley Scott‘s Alien. In the third and final episode dedicated to the 1979 sci-fi horror masterpiece, crewmates McKenzie Gerber, Dan Caffrey, Michael Roffman, and Rachel Reeves prepare for evac by taking inventory on its one-of-a-kind cast of blue-collar shipmates, debate the scariest scene, marvel at all those stellar effects, and more.
