“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” The adage comes from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, made by John Ford, the undisputed master of a genre that plays with the disparity between American myth and reality like no other. The new four-part Curiosity Stream docuseries The Real Wild West tries its own hand at this task, dutifully highlighting stories and figures that have traditionally received short shrift from Hollywood and other purveyors of pop culture. Black cowboys, fearless madams, conquistadors, the Trail of Tears, the depletion of the buffalo,...

It's not every day you hear a TV creator suggest googling "Satanism," "preschool," and "Louisiana," but those mad-lib-sounding search terms were apparently the recipe for Nic Pizzolatto when he was writing "True Detective" season 1. Traveling back along the "flat circle" of time, as Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) would call it, "True Detective" made its series premiere on HBO in January 2014. Almost immediately, it became a water cooler phenomenon, as viewers grew obsessed with its nonlinear crime narrative involving Cohle, his partner Marty Hart, and their investigation of a dead body crowned with deer antlers in a sugarcane field.
Throw in weird-fiction references to the mythical city of Carcosa and the Robert W. Chambers horror story collection, "The King in Yellow," and "True Detective" would begin to take on some quasi-supernatural shadings. Yet as its title suggests, it was also tapping into an interest in true crime, the way the Peabody Award-winning podcast,...

Before Victoria Fuller‘s alleged shady past and Madison Prewett‘s fantasy suite ultimatum dominated “The Bachelor,” the major drama from the first half of the season came courtesy of Victoria Paul and Alayah Benavidez, and you can definitely bet on them serving even more drama on Monday’s “Women Tell All.”
A refresher if you’ve already bleached their inane beef from your memory: They know each other from the pageant circuit — Alayah was Miss Texas and Victoria was Miss Louisiana at Miss USA 2019 — and when some of the other ladies mentioned to Peter Weber that Alayah might not be there for the ~right reasons~, Victoria then told him that Alayah had asked her to lie to producers about them knowing each other. It’s all incredibly dumb but it’s the petty drama we live for.

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.
The Faculty
As far as high school horror films go, The Faculty has remained one of my very favorites for years now. Essentially, it’s Robert Rodriguez riffing on The X-Files, and who can resist that?...

Following a divisive and bitter election, crowds began to descend on Washington, D.C., in the early morning hours Friday to witness the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States — some for different reasons than others.
Excited groups bustled atop the brick sidewalks of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, toward their metro stop to head into the nation’s capital in the pre-dawn hours. Passengers played “guess where I’m from” with strangers from around the country. Two Texas women played matchmaker for their absent adult children, trading photos, contact information and pinky-swears to keep secret their plot.

"What does it mean to be human?" is the least interesting question science fiction can ask, though that hasn't stopped the genre from using tales of androids among us to ask it year after year. "What does it mean to be inhumane?" on the other hand? That's an inquiry worth exploring. To knowingly inflict pain on artificially intelligent machine-men (or machine-women, though that's a whole other issue) – when we treat them as slaves or toys or, to use Westworld's evocative term, "livestock" – that says a lot about us. Going UNDERGROUNDEverybody and their dog, it seems, feels this off imperative to try to identify common themes in the handful of festival films they (we) (I) see in a given year. It's the Ghost of Hegel, I suppose, demanding that we make sense of our times by referring to some Zeitgeist. (Zeitgeist? Isn't this just as likely to Strand the FilmsWeLike in some oh-so-precious Music Box, to be unearthed years later by members of some as-yet-unassembled Cinema Guild? But I digress.) There may or may not be tendencies running through this year's feature selections, and if there are, that could have as much to do with the people who selected them than with any global mood. But there does seem to be a generalized turning-inward, with filmmakers making works about themselves and their immediate lives, the cinematic process, and the very complexities of communicating with other human beings. There are...

Pier Paolo Pasolini’S Trilogy Of Life (Criterion) Pier Paolo Pasolini was Italy’s last Neo-Realist, a product of post-ww II Europe who was fervently Catholic, openly gay, defiantly Marxist, and one of the most original voices of the 20th century’s second half. Before his brutal murder in 1975 (after the premiere of his still-controversial swan song, “Salo”), Pasolini directed a trilogy of films based on masterpieces of medieval literature: Boccaccio’s “The Decameron,” Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” and “The Thousand and One Nights (also known as “The Arabian Nights”). The three films celebrate the uninhibited, earthy, raw carnal nature of the original texts, leaving little to the imagination, but also offering Pasolini’s own very unique and pointed views on modern society, consumerism, religious and sexual mores (and hypocrisies), and an unexpurgated celebration of the human body, both male and female. Extraordinary production design by Dante Ferretti and another evocative,...

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt boarded a private jet yesterday to leave New Orleans. They made the trip along with their six kids, as well as the family dog Jacques. Zahara wore blue braids, a new look, as she boarded. Angelina only spent one day in Nola, having traveled there Saturday to attend Brad's Make It Right gala following a few days spent in NYC attending the Women in the World summit. Brad was in Louisiana for the last week, though, checking in on Make It Right's architectural efforts and offering pal Ellen DeGeneres a tour of the lower 9th ward. Brad and Ellen teamed up to cohost Saturday's event, which was expected to raise $4 million for Make It Right Nola. The event was star-studded, with Brad, Ellen, and Angelina joining Sean Penn, Kanye West, Rihanna, and more. View Slideshow ›...

Brad Pitt suited up in his riding gear and hit the open road in New Orleans yesterday while three of his kids, Zahara, Maddox, and Shiloh, took the family bulldog Jacques for a walk. Angelina Jolie, however, is expected in NYC to attend a conference in honor of International Women's Day. The busy actor is back at his home-away-from-home in Louisiana, where his Make It Right Foundation is headquartered. Brad joined pal George Clooney and fellow actors Matt Bomer, Kevin Bacon, and Matthew Morrison over the weekend in a live stage reading of Dustin Lance Black's 8. They joined forces to bring awareness to Proposition 8 and marriage equality, a cause important to both Brad and George. Brad's other half, Angelina Jolie, kept the kids busy on Saturday while Brad prepped for the theater. Angelina, Shiloh, and Vivienne held hands leaving La's El Capitan Theater Saturday after a screening of The Secret World of Arrietty.

Rating (out of five): ****
In last year's Kick-Ass, an ordinary comic book nerd dons a costume and becomes a superhero. Despite his lack of superpowers, he eventually finds himself on a super adventure, with a big, spectacular showdown. James Gunn's Super starts out much the same way, except that this hero (played by Rainn Wilson) doesn't know much about comic books and he's a little less of a role model. In fact, comparisons to Travis Bickle are appropriate.
Frank D'Arbo (Wilson) is the ultimate in schlubby. His clothes and hair are schlubby, he lives in a schlubby town (actually Shreveport, Louisiana), and works as a cook in a schlubby little diner. He has somehow lucked into a beautiful wife, Sarah (Liv Tyler), though she is on the verge of leaving him; she's a recovering addict and is falling off the wagon. When she finally does,...

Continuing in the honor of the upcoming Texas Frightmare Weekend, Tmp takes a look at some of the most notorious "curses" that have seemingly plagued Hollywood over the years. Chronicling odd circumstances and strange occurrences, some of these instances are just plain creepy.
Curses and misfortune have persisted in the realm of artistic creation since the premiere of Shakespeare's Macbeth, quite possibly before that. But the stories behind the curses that terrorize some productions would seek to prove that the supernatural can affect more than just the imagination. The following stories are just a few of the more intriguing ones we've discovered haunting the hallowed history of Hollywood.
Calories Or Curses?
A Confederacy of Dunces
Widely regarded as one of the most cursed projects in Hollywood, A Confederacy of Dunces, based on the absolutely hilarious and bestselling book by John Kennedy Toole, has yet to even get off the ground.

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.

The Last Exorcism
Stars: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Iris Bahr | Written by Hugh Botko & Andrew Gurland | Directed by Daniel Stamm
I like it when horror movies surprise me, and The Last Exorcism managed to, despite being potentially hamstrung by its “found footage” premise focusing on an exorcist operating in the Bible Belt.
The faux documentary follows preacher Cotton Marcus (an excellently charismatic Patrick Fabian) who has been preaching since he was 10, following in the footsteps of his father. The family deal in making money, saving souls and exorcising demons. He talks about how “every faith has exorcists, but all you hear about is the Catholic church, you know, because they’ve got that (movie)…”
Marcus is immediately likeable, a true showman, who recognises the frenzy his congregation gets into, but ultimately wants to ensure that his wife and son have the best life possible. He asks the crew to document an exorcism,...

This is the review for The Last Exorcism, directed by Daniel Stamm and starring Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Iris Bahr, Caleb Landry Jones and Tony Bentley. Written by Pure Movies writer Suki Ferguson. This slightly tongue-in-cheek horror takes us modern cynics at our word, and presents us with an exorcist who no more believes in demons than Richard Dawkins believes in deities. In deepest Louisiana, we meet the Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) - a genial fraud who charms believers as thoroughly as he cons them. It’s not that he’s lost faith in what he does; he simply never believed to begin with. Imagine, if you can, a handsome American version of our beloved Jeremy Kyle, working his magical bulls*** on unsuspecting Deep South hicks. You get the drift.

The Last Exorcism has been in theatres for a couple of weeks now, and you know what that means - time for Trembles' take on the flick!
Synopsis
When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer (Louis Herthum), the Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) expects to perform just another routine "exorcism" on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort, certain his teenage daughter Nell (Ashley Bell) is possessed by a demon who must be exorcized before their terrifying ordeal ends in unimaginable tragedy.
Buckling under the weight of his conscience after years of parting desperate believers with their money, Cotton and his crew plan to film a confessionary documentary of this, his last exorcism. But upon arriving at the already blood-drenched family farm, it is soon clear that nothing could have prepared him for the true evil he encounters there.

Recently, I attended a packed screening of The Expendables (2010), and before that Stallone bloodfest unspooled the audience was treated to an endless parade of trailers for upcoming movies. The crowd hardly reacted to any of them. In fact, the pin-drop silence several of them induced was embarrassing. But, man, when the teaser for The Last Exorcism (2010) appeared, a different kind of silence enveloped the room. People actually listened to the narration, then jumped and gasped as images from the horror film flashed on the screen. And there was excited, audible chattering going on the instant it ended. Now, it’s entirely possible that every single powerful and freaky image from The Last Exorcism was up there on the screen in that trailer, but if the film is even a third as atmospheric and terrifying it could be a winner. Produced by Eli Roth and directed by German filmmaker Daniel Stamm,...

It's not easy being a horror fan these days. One need only witness the recent crop of horror fare, particularly in regard to the flaccid remakes of 1980s slasher movies, to realize that a certain segment of today's audiences have grown accustomed to tidy little resolutions. Of course, this phenomenon is not confined to any specific genre, but horror movies are particularly guilty of being exclusively plot-driven and stocked with wholly undeveloped characters or, at the most, a handful of semi-developed characters for whom the audience doesn't feel any real emotional involvement because, well, it's pretty fucking difficult to cozy up to archetypes (no bedside manner or anything) who are probably gonna die anyway. At the same time, audiences aren't entirely opposed to characterization or a story that ends with a good mindfuck, just so long as there's fair warning before execution. Just look at the success of Inception, which...

At the time of writing this review it’s been almost 24 hours since I watched The Last Exorcism. I’ve spent that time thinking about the film and trying to figure out what exactly my thoughts are on it, and how I really feel about it. For a film to have that affect, you could say that in itself is a success.
The Last Exorcism follows Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) as he documents his experience as he conducts one final exorcism. You see, Rev. Marcus has been a preacher his whole life. He performed his first exorcism at the ripe old age of 10 and had been doing them thoughout his life ever since. He has his reservations about his chosen profession and questions his faith and religious practices. You get the sense that the good Reverend is disenchanted with his profession. He proves his point that his flock will...

The Last Exorcism Directed by: Daniel Stamm Written by: Huck Botko & Andrew Gurland Starring: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Caleb Landry Jones The Last Exorcism is a pretty interesting film right up until it tries to scare you. Told in the faux documentary style popularized recently by Paranormal Activity and District 9, director Daniel Stamm’s take on the oft-botched demonic possession sub-genre begins tantalizingly well. At its root is a terrific character, evangelical preacher and admitted shyster Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), who sets out to produce a documentary exposing exorcism rituals as a mere placebo for the affected. Like a magician revealing trade secrets, we follow Marcus and his two-man film crew down Louisiana way to the Sweetzer residence, where he pulls out all the stops, first feeding into the symptoms of the peculiar young girl Nell (Ashley Bell), then to his entire prefabricated ceremony, complete with...

When it comes to contemporary scary tales, most films resort to fantastic gorefests and extremism to provoke reactions from the audience. Thankfully, The Last Exorcism rarely resorts to such cliched convention.
Shot in documentary style, the subject is Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), a reforming evangelist who's out to prove how believers can be convinced that demonic possessions and exorcisms are faked to exploit them. Cotton is arrogantly charming, fully aware of his power to persuade, and how that factors into his ability to hoodwink the faithful. When he randomly selects a request to perform an exorcism to expose the trickery behind them, he and the documentary crew are off to rural Louisiana to answer a desperate farmer's pleas. Unfortunately for Cotton, he is asked by a desperate father to perform an exorcism he never wants to do; one on a child.

The Last Exorcism
Starring Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bellfont
Directed by Daniel Stamm
Rated PG13
Aw geez. Well, let me give you the good news before I give you the bad news. The Last Exorcism is a single camera mocumentary about a cynical preacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Cotton Marcus, played by Patrick Fabian, is having a camera crew follow him to dispel the myths about demonic inhabitations and the practice of exorcism. Sophisticated, self aware, and very funny, Fabian does a wonderful job with this very cleverly crafted character who believes that possession is merely a self-induced affliction brought on by psychological illness.
The setup is a bit long winded, but is light and entertaining enough to carry the audience along to the Sweetzer farm where we meet Louis, Louis Herthum, and his daughter Nell, Ashley Bell. Louis believes his daughter is possessed, and Cotton supports him entirely with...

Not all of us on the MTV Movies team are horror fans. Some have admitted in public that knife-wielding maniacs and rivers of blood freak us out.
What a delight, then, to find "The Last Exorcism." Though, honestly, there is nothing delightful about this low-budget flick, which delivers plenty of tense jolts and sweaty-palmed anticipation, forcing us scaredy-cats to hide our eyes. It's just that "Last Exorcism" is such a delightful surprise.
The film is a character-driven drama tethered to everyday reality by its faux-documentary style. The disillusioned preacher, the frightened small-town teen — these are people to whom we can relate, for whom we can come to care. We'll take this sort of horror flick any day over the torture porn of something like "Hostel" or the...

Ashley Bell isn't a household name just yet, but if there's any justice in the world, that will all change after this weekend when Lionsgate releases Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism.
Bell stars in the upcoming thriller as Nell Sweetzer, an isolated teenage girl living in rural Louisiana with her overprotective father, Louis (Louis Herthum), and her prickly brother, Caleb (Caleb Landry Jones), who is visited by a local minister (Patrick Fabian) at the request of her father, who thinks she's being possessed by a demon.
With The Last Exorcism (review here) set to hit theaters in just a few hours, Dread Central had the opportunity to catch up with the actress to talk about her performance in the film as well as her experiences while filming in rural Louisiana.
The first time audiences meet the Sweetzer family, it's on the family plantation, set apart from the community around it.

Reverend Cotton Marcus has had his fill of being a fraud.
A life-long evangelical minister, Marcus has conducted numerous exorcisms all in the good name of making money. "The Church doesn't run on love," he says with a smile, referring to the fact that the practice is his primary income. But his disillusionment has peaked and brought about a need to repent; Marcus has agreed to allow a documentary team film his fraud in action in order to blow the cover on the business of evangelical exorcisms.
Marcus randomly picks the family he'll work with by opening the first letter on top of the pile on his desk. This letter leads him to a farmer in a very rural area of Louisiana, who swears his daughter Nell has...

Plus, Jake West will be presenting his in-depth documentary Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship And Videotape, which will be followed by a Q & A panel discussion.

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the upcoming Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) – produced horror film The Last Exorcism starring Patrick Fabian, Louis Herthum, Caleb Landry Jones, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr and Tony Bentley.
When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort, certain his teenage daughter Nell is possessed by a demon who must be exorcized before their terrifying ordeal ends in unimaginable tragedy.
Buckling under the weight of his conscience after years of parting desperate believers with their money, Cotton and his crew plan to film a confessionary documentary of this, his last exorcism. But upon arriving at the already blood drenched family farm, it is soon clear that nothing could have prepared him for the true evil he encounters there.
