Quotes

  • Gonzalo Bárcena : My wife's ideal would be to have a slave. But slavery ended long ago, fortunately.

Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : I don't know, I don't know. In Rome, some slaves lived better than their masters, and without any responsibility!

  • Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : [He pours two glasses of wine]  Why don't you say it already, Bárcena? You have come here to propose that I be your slave.

Gonzalo Bárcena : [He stands up]  But how dare you? If it was you who...

Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : Yes, the other day I proposed this to his wife. But today you come to propose it to me.

[Gives him a glass of wine]

Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : Let's not talk anymore: I accept.

Gonzalo Bárcena : No no no no. No no. You do not accept. You do not accept because I have not proposed anything to you.

  • Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : Do you know why you are telling me all that? You like chickens, dogs and birds, but they don't answer you if you talk to them. You like men and women, but sometimes they contradict you. I am part a dog and part a man. I will always agree with you, and support your decisions. Tell me to kill myself, and I'll kill myself. Tell me to burn this farm down, and I'll burn it down. Tell me to sleep with you, and I'll do my best not to let you down. Tell me to keep a secret, and I'll keep it.

  • Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : [talking to a laying hen]  Why do you lay an egg, if it's night? Haven't you realized by now that it's a trick from your mistress? They turn on the light for you, and an egg. They turn it off, and go to sleep.

Gallina : So? Same as you. Every day is the same. The sun always rises from the same place. However, they tell you that the day is called Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, and you lay an egg. They tell you it's called Sunday, and you don't lay an egg. The next day, they call it Monday, and you lay another egg.

Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : [Leaving]  But that doesn't go with me. She doesn't have a clue. She doesn't know that my days no longer have names.

  • Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : Virtuous wombs have produced wicked offspring.

  • Don Leopoldo Contreras de Tejada : All the charms of Sycorax, toads, beetles, bats, light on you! For I am all the subjects that you have, which first was mine own King; and here you sty me.
