Sex & Nudity

  • Two large bare breasted perky nippled statues guard the entrance to the land of the southern oracle. As Atreyu enters, there is a minute or so of closeups on the breasts as the suspense builds. Later, the oracle is also composed of two similar statues, however, these are textured in a way that doesn't draw as much attention.

Violence & Gore

  • When Bastian runs into some bullies, they chase him down an alley and throw him into a garbage dumpster.
  • A knight in armor is "zapped" by the golden sphynxes. His charred face is later shown up close on camera.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film's major plot centers around an unknown force that is slowly destroying the world. As such, the film is very dark and could be emotionally upsetting.
  • The fantastic ambient goes darker and more philosophically dense towards the end of the film.
  • Bastian being bullied at the start may be upsetting for kids who are going through that.
  • The appearance of G'mork the wolf is pretty frightening.
  • Atreyu's confrontation with G'mork near the end is very intense, especially when Atreyu dramatically challenges G'mork to fight him. There is also a lot of blood when Atreyu stabs him.

  • The horse getting absorbed in the goop may be emotional and upsetting and the boy crying after reading that part of the story may be terrifying to those who don't like serious facial expressions.
  • Animal death scene. Atreyu's horse Artax drowns in the swamps. It's very sad and may be upsetting to young children. (He comes back to life at the end)
  • We see a knight getting killed by a statue that shoots a laser at him. Then when Atreyu comes near, the knight's helmet cracks open, showing us a glimpse of his charred skull.
