The 2022 Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff) kicked off Friday with great pomp and circumstance — and a few bars of “Hail to the Chief” — as Barack and Michelle Obama made a special appearance for the opening night screening of Netflix documentary “Descendant.”
When Netflix acquired worldwide rights to the Sundance award-winning documentary in January, the Obamas’ production company Higher Ground signed on to present the feature alongside the streamer and Participant. The documentary, which earned the U.S. special jury award for creative vision at Sundance, is set to launch on the streamer later this year.
Directed by Margaret Brown, the documentary follows members of Africatown, a small community in Alabama, as they share their personal stories and community history as descendants of the Clotilda, the last known ship carrying enslaved Africans to the United States. The ship arrived in America 40 years after African slave trading became a capital offense.

The doors might not play "Hail to the Chief" when you walk in, but otherwise the new Alamo Drafhouse location is as presidential as it gets. The latest Drafthouse location starts its soft opening today, December 10, 2021, in Washington, D.C., and promises to give theater-goers a fun experience with a lobby themed to movie presidents, a bar that's straight out of a spy film, and an "Independence Day"-themed theater. The centerpiece of the "Hall of Movie Presidents" is a statue of President Whitmore from "Independence Day," arguably the greatest movie president of all time. Bill Pullman,...

Film-maker who predicted a Trump victory fires back after president labels his Broadway show, The Terms of My Surrender, a ‘total bomb’
Michael Moore’s Broadway show may not have brought down a president, as its advertising tagline suggested it might. But it did distract one. On Saturday, six days after the end of the show’s run and on yet another day of high political drama, Donald Trump tweeted his ire.

Donald Trump, take note; this is how to condemn bigotry. Kid Rock — who signaled a possible run for U.S. Senate in his home state of Michigan earlier this year — kicked off his concert in Grand Rapids on Wednesday with a fiery speech, taking aim at Nazis, the Kkk and the Black Lives Matter movement with salty-tongued gusto. Taking the stage to the strains of “Hail to the Chief” and riling up the crowd from behind an eagle seal-bedecked podium, the “Devil Without a Cause” musician declared, “Call me a racist because I’m not PC, as if you have to.

On-screen presidents are an unusual collection because they don’t always reflect what we want from a leader. (Though these days, it seems that consensus is fracturing more than ever.)
Some are abrasive, some are diabolical. Others are worse at their job than you would expect. So when picking the “best” TV versions of U.S. presidents, it’s just as important to consider what these individuals brought to the position that previous inhabitants did not, for good or ill.
Despite the occasional missteps of these fictional Commanders-in-Chief, many of them do represent the theoretical ideals that a national leader should uphold: a clear grasp of the office’s privilege, an understanding of the ramifications of key policy decisions, and the power that words can have to send a message to the entire nation.

No one who has watched even 30 seconds of “The Leftovers” would tell you it’s a cheery show. HBO’s ambitious, poignant, and periodically gut-wrenching drama often chases one devastating moment with another, occasionally pausing to give the viewer a brief, teary respite — if we’re lucky.
Enter Season 3. In any given episode of “The Leftovers,” tears are a sure thing, but there are scenes that spark tears of joy. From Nora’s awkwardly endearing comebacks (“Fuck your daughter!”) to Kevin’s attempts at family bonding to a giant blow-up doll of Gary Busey, the laughs are there, if you can smile through the pain.

Hail to the chief — our future President Kanye West stole the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, announcing his beautiful dark twisted candidacy for Commander-in-Cheezus. "Yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided to run for President in 2020," he said, after a brilliantly rambling 10-minute-plus speech that had more music in it than any of the night's performances. Kanye's stoned Video Vanguard soliloquy ("we the Millennials, bro!") was this year's Vma highlight, as everybody knew it would be. The whole point of the bash every year is...

Akon has the same crisis we all do -- what the hell do ya buy an African president who has everything?! The answer, according to Akon ... is a $350k tricked out bulletproof ride. The guys over at The Auto Firm in South Fl. tell us Akon ordered a 2014 Mercedes Sprinter from them a year ago ... and asked them to reinforce the whole thing in bulletproof armor. That's the kinda order that raises eyebrows -- but...

Bruce Springsteen is drawing heat for...supporting our nation's veterans. Though Eminem received his share of criticism for dropping multiple f-bombs at the televised Concert for Valor Veteran's Day event on Tuesday, The Boss (along with collaborators Dave Grohl and Zac Brown) has been taken to task even more harshly by Twitter users and right-wing pundits alike for performing a cover of John Fogerty's anti-war song "Fortunate Son" at the D.C. event. "The song, not to put too fine a point on it, is an anti-war screed, taking shots at 'the red white and blue,'" gripes neocon opinion mag The Weekly Standard. "It was a particularly terrible choice given that 'Fortunate Son' is, moreover, an anti-draft song, and this concert was largely organized to honor those who volunteered to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq." “You’re doing this for an audience of veterans, and it...

Last week, CBS premiered the new political drama Madam Secretary, which stars Téa Leoni as Elizabeth Faulkner McCord, the U.S. Secretary of State. It's hardly a far-fetched concept, as we've seen three female secretaries of state since 1997: Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton. But it's nonetheless rare to see a fictional universe with a woman in one of the nation's top three positions of political power. (Yep, even in fake realities, politics is a man's game.) And historically speaking, Hollywood has played it as a joke more often than not. So which fictional female presidents, vice presidents...

Vice President Selina Meyer is officially getting another term now that HBO has renewed its profanely funny political satire Veep, which stars Rolling Stone's current cover star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for a fourth season. The network has also rebooted the tech-industry sitcom Silicon Valley, which was created by Mike Judge of Office Space, Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill fame, for a second season, according to E! Online.

In honor of Veep's Season Four premiere last Sunday, we put together a list of our 25 favorite insults from HBO's popular political comedy. It's one thing to read the show's eloquently profane put-downs, however, and another thing entirely to hear the show's star (and current half-naked Rolling Stone covergirl) Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her fellow comedians actually say these hilariously horrible things to each other. So we've compiled a quick-and-dirty supercut of the 25 Best Insults from 'Veep.' To say this is Nsfw is an understatement of epic proportions; prepare...

"Someone just told me that the show seems to be getting exponentially better, which is scary," admits Veep's showrunner Armando Iannucci. Wait…why, exactly, would a high compliment like that be considered frightening? "Because by Season 10, it'd be terminally unwatchable! Viewers would see 30 seconds of an episode and then they'd expire en masse, in a state of ecstatic bliss."
To be fair, there have been moments in the first two seasons of this HBO comedy about the Beltway backstabbers, boobs and buffoons that circle the President's second-in-command (played to...

Just like with the Oscars, some artists take out “for your consideration” ads when soliciting votes for the Academy of Country Music Awards. For the last few years, Taylor Swift has taken it a step further and posted a funny video that gets her in front of voters’ eyeballs, but always in a way that pokes a little fun at herself and doesn’t shill for votes in a shameless way. This year, she does all she can do to put off a discussion with her label head, Scott Borchetta, about making the video and in doing so, playfully references everything that has endeared her to us, including her boy obsession and her devotion to her cat, Meredith, who gets an adorable cameo. Dressed in stylish black top and pants, she looks sleek and effortlessly elegant, like Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face.” In Borchetta's office, "Hail to the Chief" plays,...

The origin story of the Uglydoll brand, a line of cute yet odd-looking creations that were quite literally born out of love, is about as romantic as the story from The Notebook. David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim are not just the co-creators of the line, but also a happily married couple, and the idea for the dolls was inspired by a drawing David whipped up in a letter he sent to his then-girlfriend, who at the time was living far away from him. To make a long story short, Sun-Min Kim ended up sewing together the very first proto-uglydoll, bringing David’s drawing to life as a surprise gift. With that bit of handcrafted collaboration and inspiration, the Uglydoll brand was born in 2001. Now, over a decade later, the brand is stronger and more successful than ever; that original Diy doll has spawned hundreds of adorable little friends, oodles of...

On June 26, Avenged Sevenfold led fans in an online scavenger hunt that resulted in the band’s new album cover art, title, and release date being announced.
Their sixth studio album, titled “Hail to the King,” will be released on Aug. 27, and the day before the band will play a free show at the Hollywood Palladium to celebrate the album release.
“Nightmare,” the band’s previous album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 765,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Like that album, “Hail to the King” will be produced by Mike Elizondo.
Their previous album was released just under five months after The Rev passed away. Mike Portnoy, formerly of Dream Theater, filled in the position to record and toured with the band. Two songs, including the emotionally charged “Fiction” which features The Rev on vocals and piano, and “Save Me”, were dedicated to their fallen bandmate.

Staggeringly implausible, cartoonishly comical, Roland Emmerich's "White House Down" is refreshingly dumb.
Refreshing because carefree action absurdity, once the province of the summer cinema, is on the outs. Solemnity – even for caped, flying men in tight-fitting trousers – is in.
But there's an inarguable, senseless pleasure in watching Jamie Foxx, as the president of the United States, kicking a terrorist and shouting: "Get your hands off my Jordans!" Hail to the chief, indeed.
"White House Down" follows Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen," released in March, as the second movie this year to imagine an assault on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The two films are very similarly plotted, but "White House Down" is notably less serious, more content to loosen the strings and acknowledge its own inherent preposterousness.
This becomes particularly crystalized somewhere around the time Foxx's President James Sawyer and his rescuer, Channing Tatum's wannabe secret service agent, are careening...

As he took the podium to the rap song "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled, rather than the traditional "Hail to the Chief," President Barack Obama joked, "Rush Limbaugh warned you about this. Second term, baby! We're changing things around here a little bit." That introduction set the tone for a fun speech from the President where he took aim at everyone, from the media to himself.
The President started by making fun of his own age with a mocked-up cover of a magazine called Senior Leisure, with him on the cover. Obama admits that he's getting older, joking, "These days I look in the mirror and I have to admit I'm not the strapping young Muslim Socialist I used to be."
Obama also talked about the criticism he received for referring to California Attorney General Kamala Harris as "the best looking attorney general in the country." "As you might imagine,...

President Barack Obama kicked off a celebratory night of Memphis Soul performances in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday by suggesting a small change in presidential tradition. "Give it up for our musical director, Booker T. and the Memphis Soul All-Stars," Obama told the audience, as Booker T. Jones wrapped up "Green Onions." "I just want everybody to know that it is now my second term, so rather than 'Hail to the Chief,' we're going with ('Green Onions') from here on out."
