DARYL is a reworking of the old "Pinocchio" story, about the puppet boy (in this case a robot boy) who wants to be a "Real" boy. It's a very odd movie that is divided into two entirely separate halves. In the first part we are introduced to Daryl and the suburban life that he lives with his prospective, adoptive, parents. The second half of the movie is so different that it could have been taken from another film. Whereas the first half is bathed in sunshine and deals with small town America, with it's emphasis on family bonding and baseball. The second half of the film is shot largely at night and is almost "James Bond" like with it's car chase, futuristic secret plane and covert military experiments. DARYL is certainly a film of two halves and despite liking the film a great deal I can't lie and pretend that the two halves make a seamless whole because they don't. Never the less the film takes an interesting hypothesis and deals with it in a thought provoking manner. It raises valid points about what it is that makes someone a human and the rights of those who are considered not to meet the criterion. The script and musical score are generally good and the acting is, in the main, at least satisfactory. All in all a fairly good film that could have been so much better with a bit more thought. The one bright spark that lifts the film above the fair-to-average category is the performance of Barret Oliver as the eponymous DARYL. He plays the part with perfection, lending to the character the required nuances of calm observance, awkwardness and stiltedness. He is afterall a robot who observes and copies the behaviour he sees around him and it is Barret Oliver's performance above all else that raises this film from the mundane to the almost (but not quite) sublime. The planned spontaneity of his rebellious temper tantrum at the baseball game is delivered with absolute perfection, at that point and during some of the other scenes, where Barret is given pieces of extended dialogue, Barret isn't acting the part, he IS DARYL. There is an old theatre adage that says "Never act with children or animals", in this case it's easy to see why because the film's child star acted everyone else off the set.
