Sex & Nudity

  • A couple is forced to marry due to a pregnancy. Not shown, but discussed.

Violence & Gore

  • Several people are shot for looting and other offenses, one in particular is executed in a small room with lots of blood splattering all over the wall.
  • A dead sheep is cut open and eaten, the cutting is offscreen and there is no scene onscreen, but two people eating it are seen with blood on their hands and faces.
  • We see a dead, burnt corpse's mouth filled with maggots
  • A single nuclear weapon falls near the city of Sheffield (the setting of the film), and it's implied that many people would have been vaporized or terribly burnt in the blast radius which causes mass destruction to homes and neighbourhoods
  • A woman is seen with severe body-burns.
  • Frequent deaths occur in the film from radiation sickness, starvation and attempts at post-war survival
  • In a hospital, many bloody and graphic injuries are shown. We also see much blood and gore on the floors.

  • People smoke cigarettes post-war to try and help pains and stress, as the film goes on they become much less featured as they are diminished after some years.

  • The effects of nuclear war are shown in great detail.
  • One of, if not the most, realistic and uncompromising depictions of nuclear war ever created. Intensely frightening and deliberately upsetting.
  • Leg amputation scene; a doctor saws a leg off without anesthetic.

Sex & Nudity

  • A woman gives birth in one scene, nothing is shown, but she's shown to be in great pain doing so. We briefly see the baby naked, showing that it's a girl.
  • A girl is seen having intercourse with a boy and as a result becomes pregnant.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman delivers a baby offscreen, we see the baby afterwards, covered in some blood and what appears be afterbirth, the woman then proceeds to cut the umbilical cord with her teeth.
  • A girl is raped offscreen.
  • A boy is shot and killed whilst trying to steal food

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The ending depicts a girl giving birth to a baby that is implied to be severely deformed and stillborn.
