The Ladies Are Great, The Film Is Funny And Poignant

"Crimes of the Heart" is often categorized as a 'chick flick' but I (I'm a male viewer) thought the movie was much more than a story about frustrated women. The plot of the film is simple: three Southerner sisters reunite after one of them is accused of a serious crime. Of course, the family reunion is an excuse for a series of angry, confrontational sessions. The film is based on Beth Henley's famous Pulitzer-winning play and yes, the movie cannot escape its stage origins. Director Beresford tries his very best to make it cinematic, but it is obvious that the material was originally created for the theater. However, I think the movie works as a great vehicle for three of the most talented and popular actresses of the 1980s - Diane Keaton, Sissy Spacek and Jessica Lange. If you love actors, then this is your kind of movie. All three leading ladies are at the peak of their powers, and each actress has at least one great scene. Tess Harper is also excellent in a supporting role. Spacek and Harper received Oscar nominations for their work here but Keaton and Lange are as good as any of the nominated ladies. Frankly, it is not my kind of movie, but since I do admire these actors, I found the movie very satisfying. Moreover, I liked how the story explores the Southern culture in an intelligent, non-stereotypical manner. The excellent work by Production Designer Ken Adam is worth noting. A highly satisfying drama that will make you laugh and cry.
