Beresford is not quite up to standard, but the leads excel.

Bruce Beresford is one of my favorite directors, but he doesn't have much of a chance to shine in this film. In his other films set in the southern states, like "Tender Mercies" and "Driving Miss Daisy", his direction was characterized by fantastic outdoor footage. He shows some talent for comedy, but not so much style. The largely female cast is brilliant, however. Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, and Sissy Spacek don't look like sisters, but act the part, which is what matters most. Tess Harper provides some great comic relief.

"Crimes of the Heart" sometimes becomes a bit too farcical in contrast to it's more serious parts, but it is truly a good little story.
