Dolly Parton met her best friend, Judy Ogle, when they were both children. They remained friends through school and into Parton’s years of fame, at which time Ogle joined her on the road. After a while, though, this started to cause problems between them. According to some close to the singer, Parton had to make the difficult decision to let her best friend go. Here’s how this impacted their relationship.
Dolly Parton had to tell her best friend they could no longer work together
In 1977, Ogle, who had been helping Parton keep her career in order, abruptly returned home. Members of Parton’s band weren’t sure if she’d quit, or if she’d been fired.
One member of Parton’s band heard Ogle quit because she was tired of life away from home. Others wondered if Ogle’s position had become superfluous when Parton signed with new management,...

Dolly Parton has been famous for years, which has given her access to practically everything she could have ever wanted. She said that she gained the most precious thing in her life before stardom, though. Parton said that she considered her relationship with her husband sacred and that he was incredibly important to her.
Dolly Parton said her husband was incredibly valuable to her
Parton and her husband, Carl Dean, have been married since 1966. In their decades together, Dean has rarely been seen by the public, even as Parton grew increasingly visible. Parton said this dynamic worked well for them.
“He’s a real mystery person to the public. That’s good, though,” she said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “I mean, that’s fine with us, and fine with him. He loves me good, and my career bein’ separate from my marriage is perfectly natural for us.

Dolly Parton’s relationship with her husband, Carl Dean, has been going strong for decades, but she has managed to keep it almost entirely away from the public eye. Dean, in contrast to his wife, prefers a quiet life away from the spotlight. In the 1970s, Dean’s privacy made rumors about the couple fly. Parton said that one of these rumors was particularly embarrassing to her.
Dolly Parton found it embarrassing that people believed a rumor about her relationship
In 1977, journalist Alanna Nash met with Parton for a wide-ranging interview. Shortly before their meeting, a story ran about Parton that said she knew her marriage would work because she lived with Dean for a year beforehand. When Nash brought this up, Parton was horrified.
“Oh, I didn’t live with him!” she said, per the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “I made the mistake of sayin’ that out of country innocence.

The longevity of Dolly Parton’s career relies both on her music and her personality. She has written countless beloved songs, but she also draws people to her with her warmth and genuineness. She said she has always been a highly positive person, a quality that has a great deal to do with her faith and spirituality.
Dolly Parton said she is a highly positive person
Parton grew up in a religious household, an upbringing that shaped her into the person she is today. Still, she said that many of the positive qualities faith instills in people were innate in her.
“People are teachin’ positive thinking and the magic of believing, but somebody had to feel and know that sort of thing naturally in order to start the program,” she said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “I just happen to be one of those people born with that gift of believing,...

While Dolly Parton has enjoyed nearly everything her career has thrown at her, she still has to deal with the less glamorous sides of celebrity. Over the years, Parton has received a series of death threats. Her method of handling these has varied, but early in her career they greatly alarmed her. She turned down an exciting opportunity because of a series of threats to her life.
Dolly Parton turned down a chance to further her career because of death threats
In 1976, Parton prepared to play a show in West Virginia when she learned that someone had made a death threat against her. To protect herself and her band, Parton decided she could not go on with the show.
“We had our stuff backstage, unpacked and ready to go,” guitarist Tom Rutledge said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “I was next door eating, and word came down that...

Dolly Parton’s ebullient personality makes it seem like little gets her down, but things still bother the singer. According to one of her backup singers, three things deeply disturbed the Queen of Country. Outside one show in Atlanta, a woman upset her by touching on two of these things.
Dolly Parton’s friend said an encounter outside a show disturbed the singer
Parton has been famous for decades and has often leaned into gossip about her as a way to promote her projects. She admitted that while tabloids often overblow news, there is typically a grain of truth in the stories they run. It bothers her deeply when there is not, and magazines run outright lies about her.
Even worse than this is when someone doubts her talent, or calls her songwriting into question. Parton rightfully takes immense pride in her work and she finds it incredibly hurtful when...

In 1983, Dolly Parton nervously prepared for a concert special in England. She was incredibly concerned ahead of the show as she wasn’t sure how the audience would react to her. Her audience’s perception of her outfit became the least of her worries, though. Just before she was meant to start the show, she heard news of a bomb threat to the theater. Here’s how Parton reacted.
Dolly Parton learned of a bomb threat shortly before a concert
Parton filmed a 1983 HBO special at the Old Dominion Theater in London. She spent time before the concert fretting about her audience. She wasn’t sure how they would react to “the big, overblown, oversequined cartoon of a woman who was about to stand before them,” (per Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business).

In 1976, Dolly Parton spread her wings in the entertainment industry and began to host a television show. While it wasn’t always a perfect experience — she didn’t always feel that producers’ visions aligned with hers — she was incredibly proud of one episode. She worked so well with her guests that she went on to record an album with them.
Dolly Parton was very proud of an episode of her television show
Parton hosted the variety show Dolly in 1976 and 1977. Two of her early guests were Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. She felt nothing but pride for the way they gelled on the episode.

“I did manage to do one show, however, that I will always be proud of. It is probably the best half-hour of television I ever did,” she wrote in her book Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business.

Exclusive: The Crown’s Imelda Staunton will lead a revival of the classic Jerry Herman-Michael Stewart Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! into the Andrew Lloyd Webber-owned London Palladium next summer.
Echoing words in composer and lyricist Herman’s titular number, the show’s producer Michael Harrison observed that “it’s so nice to have Imelda back on stage where she belongs.”
Directed by Dominic Cooke, the production — with Staunton playing matchmaker Dolly Levi — will begin performances at the Palladium on July 6 for a strictly limited 10-week season ending September 14.
The Palladium, designed by Frank Matcham, opened on a site close to Oxford Circus in 1910, the year King Edward VII died. It was to become a favorite venue of the Royal Family, often hosting the annual Royal Variety Show in the presence of the late Queen Elizabeth II, great-granddaughter of Edward VII.

Have you ever felt that Pink Flamingos would be even better if Divine had mugged her way through a musical number or five? Was 2020 drag slasher comedy Death Drop Gorgeous a little too slick and genteel for your appetite? Then leave it to director Heidi Moore and the maniacs at Troma to turn your crank with Kill Dolly Kill – a drag rock musical with as much good taste and refinement as production value and discernable lyrics.
Ostensibly a sequel to Moore’s Dolly Deadly (2016), Kill Dolly Kill is built around drag performer Donna Slash as the eponymous lethal poppet – the grown up drag queen alter ego of the original film’s pre-teen killer, Benji. Dolly is eager to take the title of Serial Killer of the Year as voted on by the citizens of Tromaville, but when her nemesis Slasharella (Amy Vodkahaus) gets her arrested, sent to an asylum and...

While the theme of Fantastic Fest this year is occultism/Satanic panic, the “junior” theme of the fest could easily be The Wrath of Troma, given that the opening night film of the festival was the long-awaited remake of The Toxic Avenger (review) and the studio is also bringing us Heidi Moore‘s Kill Dolly Kill. It’s a micro-budget film with horrendous production values and some truly terrible performances, so about what you’d expect from a modern Troma film, but a committed lead performance and some transgressive humor make for a mildly entertaining romp through the streets of Tromaville.
A follow-up to Moore’s 2016 film Dolly Deadly, Kill Dolly Kill sees Tromaville’s local celebrity murderess, Dolly Deadly (Donna Slash) in competition to win Serial Killer of the Year. Unfortunately, rival drag queen Slasherella (Amy Vodkahaus) has designs on the title and will stoop to the lowest of lows to take the crown.

The last time legendary entertainer Dolly Parton had a project for television, she and her team were nominated at the Emmys for Best TV Movie. That bid in 2017 was for “Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love,” a story based on her early life in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
She has now returned to television with “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” an eight-part anthology series based on stories from her songs, including “These Old Bones,” which is entered this summer on the Emmy ballot in the TV movie category. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she reveals, “When we got Kathleen Turner, we were so lucky to get her. She did an incredible job of playing the character of Old Bones. It’s really about this old lady in the mountains, a clairvoyant that knew everything that was going on… People would come for advice and information.

On the downside, Fox’s The Resident stumbled two tenths to a 0.6 and 3.52 million viewers.
The remainder of CBS’ night included NCIS: New Orleans, which was up from last week. Over at ABC, The Conners led into Bless This Mess which ticked up a tenth while Black-ish (0.5, 2.57M) slipped a tenth. Rounding out the night was Mixed-ish and Emergence which both held steady.

Broadway will dim its lights for Carol Channing tomorrow night at 7:45 pm Et, The Broadway League announced today.

Broadway’s Pretty Woman: The Musical passed the $1 million box office mark for a second consecutive week — no doubt the beginning of a habit — playing seven previews, including one heavily-comped tribute performance for the late Garry Marshall.
The previewing musical, at the Nederlander Theatre starring Samantha Barks and Andy Karl, grossed $1,008,726, a drop of about $60,000 from the previous week, reflecting the August 2 memorial performance. Marshall co-authored the musical that is set to open August 16 and, of course, directed the original 1990 film.
Broadway’s overall box office of $36,391,385 for the week ending August 5 (Week 10 of the season) was down about 8% from the previous week’s $39.6M. The Week 10 total is 14% bigger than last year’s $32M, with this year’s average ticket price of $128 about 8% heftier than last year’s $120.

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio won a second term a few weeks ago — despite, as it turns out, having some pretty famous competition.
A list of all the people who received votes in the 2017 N.Y.C. mayoral election was released by the city’s Board of Elections on Wednesday, and it has a few familiar names on it. Quite a few, in fact: Though there was a lighter turnout for this year’s mayoral election than in years past, The New York Times reported that there were more write-in votes than ever.

Some of the biggest names in country music, including Dolly Parton and Kid Rock, are severing ties with Nashville publicity titan Webster PR following a deluge of sexual harassment and assault allegations made against the firm’s owner/CEO, Kirt Webster.
Webster’s clients began their mass exodus after a former aspiring country artist named Austin Rick (also known by his stage name, Austin Cody) stepped forward last Friday, accusing Webster of sexual harassment on Facebook. By Tuesday, he had created a GoFundMe page seeking to raise funds to take Webster to court over the allegation that he drugged and sexually assaulted him.

“Diane” is the first single off Cam’s forthcoming sophomore LP, due in 2018, and follows the success of her 2015 debut Untamed, which generated her Grammy-nominated hit “Burning House.”
The happily married Cam, 32, spoke to People exclusively about the track, cheating — and how Parton has inspired her career.

One of the best moments from this year's Emmy Awards was the reunion between BFFs Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. The trio, who starred together in the iconic 1980 comedy 9 to 5, hit the stage to present the award for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie and took a shot at our current president, saying, "In 1980, we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot boss . . . and in 2017, we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot boss." Last night the American theater community, and a boat load of adjacent stars (hello Tina Fey & Scarlett Johansson) celebrated Broadway triumphs at the 71st Annual Tony Awards. As expected the revival of Hello Dolly and Dear Evan Hansen owned the evening with 4 and 6 wins respectively. Composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are now halfway to the Egot in less than half a year having picked up the Oscar for Best Original song for La La Land back in February. But the peak of the evening was Bette Midler's very funny, quite enthusiastic and extremely long acceptance for Best Actress in a Musical (the biggest lock of the evening going in).
