Trivialidades:
Doug Bradley was originally offered a choice of roles between one of the mattress movers and the Lead Cenobite. He originally thought it important that, as a new film actor, the audience should be see his face, and nearly turned down the Lead Cenobite role. másErrores:
Continuidad: The number of cups on the table during the opening scene (where Frank buys the box) changes from one to two then back to one. másCitas:
Frank Cotton: I thought I'd gone to the limits. I hadn't. The Cenobites gave me an experience beyond limits... pain and pleasure, indivisible. máspreguntas frecuentes

Clive Barker is famous for his books, his imagination and his ability to create grotesque creatures that even the most hardened of audience members find horrifying. Here, he directs a feature film. Having done two short films earlier, he knew about film-making, but I must say that I'm quite impressed with the result, since Barker had virtually no experience in film-making. The film is what anyone who knows just a little about Barker's style would expect from him; graphic, gory and violent. I wouldn't claim that it's the most graphic or most graphically disturbing that I've ever seen(that still is Scanners, which I also saw not long ago), but it's very close, and it has a very disturbing subject matter, as well. However, there are a few low points in the movie... first of all, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. And when I say a lot, I mean really, really many. Half of the film doesn't make sense(didn't to me, at least, but maybe I'm too demanding for explanations of everything in movies). Second, some of the acting is really, really bad. For the most part, it's acceptable, and often, it's good, but too much of it was bad. Third, the horror of the film demands more suspension of belief than several others of the same genre(Scanners, for instance), and partly requires you to believe in heaven and hell(which I don't), in order for the scares to work(not to say I wasn't scared out of my mind while watching it... but it might not have the same impact on me on repeated viewings, due to this simple fact). The plot is good(finally; an 80's horror film with an actual story) and has a very good pace. There was only one point in the film where I was bored, and that was when the film slipped into the common horror flick clichés("It's like she's waiting for something..." "What?" "I don't know..." that dialog has been done to death, please Barker, spare us), but it picked up soon after, and the tension lasted through the rest of the film. Considering that the film actually has reasonably few horror elements, and that several of these are brief(the Cenobites, which are pretty much main characters in the sequels, are shown about five minutes in the film, I think), it's amazing how scary it is. One minor complaint might be that the characters aren't terribly likable, but maybe that's just it... I think that was Barker's intention; also, the reason why we don't like them, might be that they remind us too much of our own weaknesses of character... they're too human. Not the typical Hollywood heart-of-gold characters, which is interesting. The special effects are great. Really impressive for the time. The violence, gore and scares are great as well. I like that this film, while it came in a period where the slasher flicks were at their peak(more or less), it didn't have a clean-cut theme or plot. It was very unpredictable, and it had that... how to describe it... that great quality that every time you thought everything was OK, that you could exhale and relax, something popped out of the woodwork, and scared you. And this goes on for at least the last half hour, and in many scenes scattered throughout the film. It's rarely boring, though. There was almost constantly something to keep your interest. Not a film for anyone(weird saying, by the way... like there actually exist a film which everybody will like), but fans of Barker should definitely see it. 80's horror fans and gore/violence fans should see it as well. This is one of those films that you pretty much either hate or love, and I loved it. I recommend it to fans of Clive Barker and 80's horror movies in general. Just make sure you know what you're in for, and be prepared to see some truly disturbing, gory moments. 7/10
