Quotes:
Ko Chow: [after Wah is killed, Inspector Lau asks Ko Chow to go undercover again, but Chow wants out] I sent in my resignation.Inspector Lau: I never got it.
Ko Chow: Look for it.
Inspector Lau: Chow, only you know the people that Wah did. You asked for this, remember? You can resign... once we've captured the killers.
Ko Chow: Last time with Shing, it went bad.
Inspector Lau: What went bad? We got him.
Ko Chow: I betrayed a friend.
Inspector Lau: You helped capture scum, all right? This friend ordered the deaths of hundreds. He had to die. You're a cop. Who told you to make friends with them?
Ko Chow: [frustrated] What else could I have done? You haven't been there!
[Chow pauses for a moment before speaking again]

City On Fire is supposedly the movie that inspired Quentin Tarantino to create Reservoir Dogs. I guess that's a claim he denied and then later acknowledged, but either way, what difference does it really make? None to me since I think all writers and filmmakers are influenced by each other to some extent and with the exception of one scene, the two movies are similar in subject only.
City On Fire is the story of an undercover cop (Chow Yun Fat) working to infiltrate a gang of jewel thieves before their next big score. A couple of subplots involve his relationship with his fiancé and his uncle, also a cop, but older and not in the seat of power he's used to being in. I thought it was a pretty good movie storywise, but nothing that puts it ahead of any dozen other undercover cop movies out there. I went into the movie expecting a lot of action and was a little disappointed with the slower pace, but that wasn't a bad thing. The movie had a good story that held my interest to the exciting end. I thought the movie was very well made, but I can't really tell if the acting was any good because, and this is my biggest complaint with the movie, the DVD had no option for English subtitles so viewers are forced to watch the movie with English dubbing which, IMO, was pretty bad. This was the first movie I've seen Chow Yun Fat in despite having heard his name for years.
I'd rate this a 7 out of 10 and would definitely recommend it to others.
