Even with its debits, The Frog Prince is still a solid Cannon Movie Tale film
TheLittleSongbird25 July 2015
Ranking the Cannon Movie Tale films, The Frog Prince is around top middle, with Hansel and Gretel being the best and The Emperor's New Clothes being the worst.

The Frog Prince does suffer from budget limitations. The photography is nice, but some scenes are a little too dimly lit, the castle interiors and garden are rather ordinary and almost grim, the costumes are cheap-looking with the sole exception of Zora's blue dress at the end and Ribbit's make-up is somewhat unintentionally creepy. The film also suffers from stretching a particularly slight story that generally too thin to adapt for a feature length 90 minutes, actually it does do a surprisingly decent job expanding it but the story does feel too thin and stretched at times, pacing sometimes drags and a few scenes go on longer than they need to. Some of the dialogue is also stiff, like a lot of the dialogue at the start until Ribbit is introduced and with Henrietta.

However, as said it is nicely photographed, The Cannon Movie Tale films were low-budget in production values (particularly in the costumes) but it never showed in the photography. The Frog Prince has a charming, whimsical and magically orchestrated score, that also has a little tension in some of the latter half, and the songs are surprisingly very pleasant (Friendship and the Music Box Waltz being particularly good). Not all the dialogue works, but Ribbit does have some adorably funny lines and the emotional moments are moving without being too corny or cloying. The execution of the story is similarly flawed, but it makes a clear effort to make much of little and it shows in a charming and sometimes poignant Beauty and the Beast-like take on the story, and there is a very sweet and tender between Zora and Ribbit.

Aileen Quinn is immensely appealing as Zora, a more subtle and sympathetic performance than in her still great star-making turn in the title role of Annie (which is still one of my personal favourites), her singing has also come on a long way, here it's softer and more controlled and that she's older might have a lot to do with it. Clive Revill is a funny, occasionally stern and towards the end kindly king, and Helen Hunt makes the most of her visually pretty but actually very mean older sister role. John Paragon steals the show though, bringing to Ribbit a masculine charm, a warm and witty sense of humour, affecting melancholy and remarkable athleticism (especially when we are first introduced to him).

In conclusion, has flaws but a solid attempt at adapting the story. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Not the original, but...
phillindholm12 August 2005
One problem faced by movie makers when adapting fairy tales to the screen is often the lack of material necessary to make a feature length film. "The Frog Prince" is an excellent example. The original Grimm story really doesn't contain enough plot to sustain a feature, so, here it has been rewritten as a modern morality play. A King is unsure which of his nieces is really a "true" princess. Finally the time arrives to choose one; the sweet, but immature Zora (Aileen Quinn) or the older, selfish Henrietta (Helen Hunt). Yes, Zora loses her golden ball, which is retrieved by a friendly frog (John Paragon) but the rest of the story deals with the efforts of Henrietta to win the title of princess for herself. Luckily the cast, including Clive Revill as the king, is very engaging, and the songs pleasant. But, except for the title, this is an attempt to make much out of very little. And only half the time it succeeds.

Interesting to see Aileen Quinn
SnoopyStyle27 July 2014
In the Kingdom of Tartonia, Zora (Aileen Quinn) lives a carefree life except for her older mean-spirited sister Henrietta (Helen Hunt). The King (Clive Revill) receives a letter from Baron Von Whobble that he's coming to declare one of his two nieces Zora and Henrietta is going to be a true princess. After being ridiculed, Zora wishes for someone to talk to. The Frog Prince answers her wish.

Aileen Quinn has a great big voice for a little girl as she already shown in Annie. Her singing is the best thing about this musical. There isn't much else in this movie. The production value is pretty low. The sets are fairly fake. The dialog is pretty stiff. It feels more like a stage play. The direction, the staging, and the editing could definitely use a lot of help. The singing from the rest of the cast is reasonable but nothing great. The story is pretty thin. There is nothing here other than to see a slightly older Aileen Quinn singing her heart out and Helen Hunt playing the mean girl.

Early Helen Hunt and Aileen Quinn movie.
TxMike29 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I recently saw Helen Hunt's newest movie "The Sessions", and on the eve of her turning 50 I was recalling when I first saw her. It was in the 1980s movie "Quarterback Princess." That one is not available on Netflix streaming movies but this one is. So even though it is not my usual target movie, it was fun.

This is a children's musical, and as it began and young princess Zora began to sing I thought "She sounds as good as those young girls who played 'Annie' over the years." Imagine my surprise, a pleasant one, when I realized that former "Annie" star Aileen Quinn in fact plays Princess Zora. She is the younger sister, living in her uncle's castle, not sure she is pretty enough to be a princess. But one evening outside near the pond, when she drops her special metal ball into the water a Frog, big as a man, comes jumping out. He promises to retrieve her ball if she will promise to be his friend.

Helen Hunt, in her early 20s, plays her mean, jealous older sister Henrietta. One evening she spots Zora and the Frog dancing, as he was instructing her on how to become a princess. So she manages to capture the Frog and imprison him in a pit, far away from the castle.

As the ball was beginning, and the night one of the two sisters would be chosen Princess of the land, Zora manages to locate the Frog and free him. In the process she kissed him on the cheek, gave him a hug, and looked up to see he was no longer a Frog but a handsome Prince. They make it back to the ball together, just in time, and Zora is crowned Princess.

John Paragon plays the Frog, Ribbit, in a great-looking costume, and as the movie ends has turned into the Prince Of Freedly.

Annie and Dig'em
utgard1413 November 2017
Cannon Movie Tales version of the Frog Prince fairy tale. As with the other Cannon Movie Tales I've seen, it's full of corny songs and "nice try" sets and costumes. It also has a slight story padded out to make a feature length film. But hey there's Annie herself, Aileen Quinn, and Helen Hunt before she was a star. Quinn's the lead as Princess Zamora, who befriends a prince who was cursed and turned into a frog man. In my head I called him Dig'em Frog, after the cereal mascot. Quinn does a decent job, although it's easy to see why her career didn't go anywhere. Hunt plays her sister Henrietta, who's a total bitch. Clive Revill offers nice support as the King. John Paragon (Jambi from Pee Wee's Playhouse) plays the Frog Prince (Dig'em). The frog makeup is pretty good for the limited budget, but perhaps it's a bit creepy for a kids film where the frog is a good guy. I could see this makeup being used in a horror movie. Anyway, this is one of the more enjoyable Cannon fairy tale movies I've seen. It's not great by any means but it is entertaining. For an adult, at least. Not sure how this would fly with kids. The frog might give them nightmares.

Someone's a real princess, and it's not the one who thinks she is.
mark.waltz7 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A young Helen Hunt goes down Nellie Olsen territory in this expanded version of the Grimm Fairy Tale, so wicked that she's willing to kill a frog to get her way. He's no ordinary frog. He's man sized (yet not dangerous like other man sized frogs in the movies), and after befriending Hunt's awkward younger sister (Aileen Quinn), he shows how noble and helpful he can be, all because of her loyalty and sincere friendship. John Paragon is fun in his frog makeup, with his gymnastic style dancing standing out in his musical numbers.

The story surrounds which one of the sisters is actually a princess, and it's never explained if one of them was actually adopted, but they have absolutely nothing in common as sisters. Quinn, dressed up to look like Disney's Snow White, sounds just like she did as Annie, and gets some good songs, maybe not Broadway quality, but certainly easy to listen to. Clive Revill as their uncle is appropriately bumbling, getting a nice number as well.

Definitely made for the kiddy crowd, adults can enjoy it if they are in the right mood, although it's definitely juvenile in structure. In fact, it looks more like a TV special than a major motion picture, similar in many ways to the 1965 small screen version of "Cinderella". I wasn't overly coated by sugar with this either, and Hunt's sneering character helps it from becoming cloying. A few goofy moments that sometimes make musicals cloying doesn't take away the fun.

Terrible frog film
haydens-415 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I watched frog prince when i was a just a young lad; ever since, I have been having the most terrible nightmares.

The film is about a prince who turns into a frog. The scene is terribly frightening and I recommend skipping this part when young lads are about. Aileen Quinn, the young Annie impersonator, can't sing to save her life, and she is ugly. She ends up kissing the frog man, who is a man with a frog-like head, and then he turns into a prince, who, by the way, is definitely not handsome. I preferred the frog. The film ends off with Helen Hunt, as the evil step-sister, about to become the new princess, when, Princess Zora blasts through the door with the frog prince, and becomes princess instead. Then they dance. I cried, I laughed, I cut my wrists.

Very cute, but low budget
ljs00b27 January 2006
This movie is one of quite a few that were made into what are referred to as the Canon Movie Tales. They are all low budget and filmed primarily in Isreal, so I understand. If you want an idea of what to expect, it appears that someone took some of the little children's musicals that community theaters do and got some actors that people would want to see and then, with a very small budget, produced the best film they could. They are cute, sweet, and great for kids to watch. They are the precious little things that have a moral in the end. If you are an Aileen Quinn fan, this is the only movie other than Annie that she did, and it is adorable. She sings much better in this movie and her coloring (ie hair and makeup) are much more natural. This movie is very hard to find, but it is worth the effort of searching for if this is the kind of movie that you like. Also stars a very young (not to mention completely evil) Helen Hunt.

Seriously?
paulcanaday11 February 2012
Who the hell is writing all the positive reviews of this thing? It's astoundingly awful. Cheap, obviously re-used sets. Bad sound design, horrible dialogue, crap costumes. Bad color all around. Slow-paced directing and the worst, most unimaginative dialogue ever. The whole thing just feels lazy. Like some third rate children's theater that gets a grant to produce a movie. But not a big grant. Aileen Quinn isn't much but is at least somewhat watchable. And Helen Hunt, while she can't do much with the script she's been given, at least maintains her acting dignity. She's the best thing about this, really. There are SO many better family viewing options out there. Don't bother with this.

Fabulous children's movie
Afrin8 June 2009
A lovely fairy tale made into a fun and enjoyable musical movie, I grew up watching this movie and loved it enough as a child to watch it over and over again. The songs are still fresh in my memory. Great cast, good acting, with nice characters make the plot engaging - not forgetting the fun songs. Recently saw the movie again and enjoyed it even 20 years later. Seeing it as a grown up was different, but my opinion about it doesn't change. Two princesses, one young and innocent and the older bitter sister, vying to be selected as the true princess of the kingdom, a magic ball, a funny king, and frog who dances and sings, a delightful movie for the whole family.

Low Budget, Bad/Over Acting, Bad sets
watchtiger128 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Very low budget, very evident in the sets of this film with very few known actors. Aileen Quinn (from Annie)her acting is horrible and so is Hellen Hunt's. Words from the actors come out of their mouths as if they have never spoken English before and don't know what the words mean.

The "Frog Prince" of the movie would scare children. The Giant frog doesn't seem to scare Aileen Quin's character even though this over 6 foot tall man-frog leaps from the fountain very scary makeup for the man-frog. This Grims Brothers fairy tail is turned into a musical.

The songs are oddly placed and are still strange at that.

Do not waste your time or your child's time with this movie.

John Paragon!
BandSAboutMovies1 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Cannon Movie Tales was a huge project for the studio, a series of 16 live action children's movies from Cannon Group producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, associate producer Patricia Ruben and executive producer Itzik Kol. Filmed in Israel, these movies feature major stars as the leads supported by an Israeli cast and they had a $50 million dollar budget.

While sixteen films were announced, only nine were made: The Frog Prince, Sleeping Beauty, The Emperor's New Clothes, Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Hansel and Gretel, Puss In Boots and Red Riding Hood.

Aileen Quinn from Annie plays Princess Zora, Helen Hunt plays her sister Henrietta and Clive Revill plays his second king in one of these Cannon kids movies (he's also the villainous ruler in Rumpelstiltskin*), but the real reason I was excited about this movie was to see John Paragon play Ribbit, the frog prince. Whether it's his collaborations with Pee-Wee Herman (he's Jambi and Pterri) or Elvira, I'm always overjoyed to see Paragon's name in the credits.

This was directed and written by Jackson Hunsicker, who also made Oddball Hall and wrote the 1989 version of Ten Little Indians.

*Cannon recycled a lot in these films, as this is the Rumpelstiltskin set reused for another fairy tale.

excellent - i love it
diecotschi24 September 2005
hello everyone! i am writing from Austria! i just felt i HAVE TO write a comment!

you all know the story itself: the princess is playing with her little lucky golden ball, but she loses it and - surprise - it's the frog who brings it back to her. then, everyone is happy and the two of them fall in love with each other.

and now let me tell you a little story... :) when i was little, i had a video cassette of this film and i watched it over and over again, it must have been more than a thousand times! but my cassette disappeared sometime... some months ago i came across the DVD on "amazon.de" and of course i immediately bought it. this movie has had an enormous impact on me and my personality. when i watched it again after about 10 years or so, i started to cry because it is so touching! I could remember so many details of the story, so many melodies of those wonderful songs. suddenly i remembered how i loved to look at Zora's breathtaking dress and how scared i was of the "wood of the black heart". i really love the music, the plot and also the actors. it's a pleasure watching it! i find it kind of sad that this movie is so unpopular! i mean, even Helen hunt is playing a part in it. but i heard it has never been in the movies, you could only buy it on cassette. thank god it is available also on DVD now. it's simply perfect!

A beautifully expanded tale.
arabella_wiccan_childe10 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I have read one other comment based on this story, and I think that although they have every right to their opinion, they're a little bit harsh on a story for young children. Let's face it, folks, this movie does exactly what it was meant to do - entertain the youths and their families! Which is exactly what it did when I was five years old! I have adored the Cannon Movie Tales since I was a toddler, and "The Frog Prince" has been tied up with it's sister story "Beauty and the Beast" since I was that young. "The Frog Prince" is enchanting as a story of morale and true friendship ... and I think that the music - although some songs are not as pretty as I recalled - is definitely more than charming.

(Spoiler??) I'm not sure if this is really a spoiler, but I truly enjoy the ballroom scene ... if you have seen the movie you know which Scene I'm talking about. Ribbit, who is the Frog Prince in the movie, teaches the young Princess Zora how to dance. Or at least ... something along those lines. I lost my old VHS many years ago now, and I long for it to join it's sister stories in DVD format.

All in all ... this is a spectacular story, and since I've only ever seen two other versions of this on film, I think it's the best that the film industry has created.

Charming and Heart Warming.
victorville_tess26 August 2005
This is a film I was introduced to by a friend who gave it to me as a Christmas present back in 1988. I have worn out three copies of the film since then sharing it with friends and family. This is one of the films I watch when I am feeling blue. And in spite of its flaws (weak dialog at times and almost saccharine lyrics) it is charming and warms the heart. For me the highlight of the film is John Paragon (probably best known as Jambi the Genie) in the role of the title character. His physicality brings the Frog Prince to life. His mixture of high energy, melancholy and sense of humor showcases this under-rated performer's talent. Aileen Quinn's performance as one of the princesses, is another example of her ability to shine in front of the camera. Every time she cries, I cry. And Helen Hunt as the mean sister is classic. You really want to hate her, but at the same time are feeling sorry that she doesn't understand what it means to "be a princess". Over all a very enjoyable film for children and adults alike.

Sweet, charming, little movie.
tiffanyhuggins-5815125 September 2019
I understand that this movie isn't going to win any awards, but one thing I absolutely love about this movie is that it's not trying to. It's story is simple and sweet and quite charming! The songs are also very sweet and fun, you will find yourself humming them long after you have watched this movie. It's just such a good story, and the movie itself isn't to long, or to short, it's just right. It's perfect to watch with your kids, but I just watched this movie again by myself, because it's so refreshing it puts you in the best mood no matter what kind of day you have had. Like I said before this movie doesn't try be something that it's not, and it's wonderful just the way that it is. Im kind of surprised that this movie got such bad reviews and it makes me wonder what these people were expecting before they watched it. Not every movie has to be all flashy and drama filled to be a good movie, and exspecially not a little fairytale movie. I would highly recommend watching this movie! It's simply charming!!

one of my favorite "friendship" movies
flybysail28 March 2015
My daughter was 3 and I was 32 when we first saw this version of the frog prince. It is not blockbuster material. Flaws, yes it has many. (some of them even make me cringe, they are over quickly)But its humor, courage, sweetness and songs make it great. The young princess has the charisma of Annie of "Little Orphan Annie's Broadway musical. My daughter is now almost 30, we love to sing the songs from this movie. ("the too tall frog" (almost as good as the scarecrow's "if I only has a brain" in the wizard of OZ) & "have you forgotten me?")We would dearly love to watch it again. I rank this with Steven Spielbreg's movie "always."

The Frog Prince Is A Movie Full Of Lavish And Style!
Reid-413 November 1999
The Frog Prince is a wonderful movie full of Lavish and Style! Aileen Quinn and Helen Hunt are absolutely perfect for the film. Such songs as "Lucky Day," "Friendship" and The Theme Song will make you love the movie forever! This Cannon Movie Tale is something everyone should add to their video collection.

My favorite as a kid
Liza-193 December 2001
One of the oddest versions that I have ever seen, and yet, somehow, also the sweetest. The screenwriters did take a few too many liberties with the story, even more than in the other Cannons, but the whole thing is so darn cute that you don't care. A slightly older Aileen Quinn ("Annie") is charming and Helen Hunt is such a cool wicked stepsister. (I wonder if she remembers making this movie!) Every one of the songs is memorable and enjoyable. It's impossible to pick a favorite. This was literally my favorite movie when I was little, also, it is the only Cannon Movie Tale that I owned when I was little! So? It's never too late to watch children's movies!

The cutest movie I have ever seen and my personal FAVOURITE!
ParagonFreedly30 June 2000
It's an adorable film about keeping promises, trust, and not judging appearance alone. It is in all probability the most unique version of the beloved fairytale ever made! It is a movie perfect for an individual and/or a whole family! Unfortunately it is out of print. Don't ever pass up the chance to see it!!!!!!

A young girl learns to be a friend and a Princess from the help of a Frog
hakyhiqz5 February 2006
I really enjoyed this film, but i haven't seen it all. I was actually on holiday In Yemen when i saw this film. I was so bored and i thort thank god a good film is on. It was half way thru, but i watched it anyway. And it is my favourite film ever, it's so unique the way the girl is upset and how a frog comes to her rescue, buy being her friend and teaching her how to be a princess, and she is at war with her sister who is also competing to be a princess and she almost kills Ribbit i didn't like her i thought it was a very evil character. Mean while the help of a good princess friend finds him despite the fact she really wanted to be the princess, but her scheming sister didn't get in the way, in the end her and Ribbit the frog, made it just in time to water and shock her sisters eyes down and the Frog gets a welcoming true kiss from a real princess who turns him back to a prince, her sister wouldn't have known that because she wasn't a real princess.

Nostalgia Galore (hi Jaime)
amibautz7 February 2023
I have so much love for this film, even now in my mid-30s. There is such a sweet and innocence to the film and I still laugh at all the same scenes. This could be the nostalgia that is blinding me, but I'm okay with that. Great film for children and young-at-heart. The music is another reason to love this film, it's so easy to get the songs stuck in your head. Aileen is perfect as Zora and Helen Hunt plays an amazing mean sister. It's a great movie to put on and just tune everything else out. Beautiful!

If you happen to do a review of this film, Hi Jaime French! Your videos are amazing! Love you.
