Nordic Honorary Dragon Award recipient Sidse Babett Knudsen said at Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival that she felt “frustrated” when filming HBO’s “Westworld,” particularly regarding the treatment of horses.
“In the U.S., they don’t have a flat hierarchy, which won’t surprise anyone. I would knock on the producers’ door all the time, saying: ‘These horses have been out in the sun for 10 hours, they are going to fucking die,” she recalled. “They are not even working today – get them in the shade!'”
She continued, “As a Dane, I was just looking at the resources, money and logic, going: ‘It’s crazy!’ But, of course, it’s super irritating when an actress talks about horses all the time. How did they react? Not well.”
In the first season of the dystopian series, Knudsen played Theresa Cullen, Westworld’s head of quality assurance. HBO did not immediately...

Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho’s 2006 monster movie “The Host” is among Paris-based distributor The Jokers Films’ recent releases, made available for the first time ever as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition.
The Jokers’ other new French release, the 4K restoration of Bruce Weber’s 1988 Chet Baker doc “Let’s Get Lost,” also screened at the Lumière Festival in Lyon with Weber in attendance.
Describing the film’s sound and 4K restoration as “sublime,” The Jokers head Manuel Chiche says, “‘Let’s Get Lost’ is now a timeless classic not only about life but also about art and creation.”
“Let’s Get Lost” is due to hit French theaters in summer 2024.
“The Host,” meanwhile, premiered earlier this year in France with a special screening, along with the Oscar-winning “Parasite,” and master class by Bong at Paris’ famed Grand Rex theater and also unspooled at the Institut Lumière in Lyon as part of a Bong retrospective.

A series of portraits of Black trans sex workers and the men who lust after them, D. Smith’s Kokomo City plays as a hyper-stylized companion to Zackary Drucker and Kristen Lovell’s recent The Stroll. But where The Stroll elaborates on the relationship between New York City, particularly the Meatpacking District, and trans women’s hustle using rather formulaic storytelling, Kokomo City’s look at trans sex work in Atlanta is more original.
The film’s most significant accomplishment is the mood it crafts with its cool black-and-white images, fast-paced editing, unorthodox camera angles, handheld camera, and overall jazzy atmosphere. But Smith’s investment on surfaces can only sustain the documentary for so long, as the discourse level of its interviewed subjects—a mix of trans sex workers and, to a lesser extent, trans-attracted men—never quite catches up to the euphoria of the visuals.

The creative forces behind four of the documentary films and shows that are hoping to compete at this year’s Emmys took some time to chat with Gold Derby and discussed several topics including their favorite documentaries, surprising subjects covered by docs and the changing nature of what documentaries can be. This was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries that included Ellen Goosenberg Kent (“Afghan Dreamers”), Michael Gasparro (“Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal”), Zach Heinzerling (“Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence”) and Jimmy Chin (“Wild Life”).
You can watch the TV documentary group panel above with the people behind these four programs. Click on each person’s name above to be taken to each exclusive interview.
Gasparro sighted classic documentary films like “The Thin Blue Line” as his entry point into the genre but also cited one that was a milestone for documentary series.

I met up with the director of Germany's Oscar submission, Labyrinth Of Lies (Im Labyrinth Des Schweigens), Giulio Ricciarelli, at the Loews Regency Hotel on Park Avenue, where I previously engaged Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth on working with Nick Cave, plus Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and Wim Wenders on The Salt Of The Earth earlier this year. Chet Baker's music was playing in the lobby, reminding me of Bruce Weber's Let's Get Lost, upon entering the labyrinth to discuss Ricciarelli's impressive debut feature. It stars Alexander Fehling of Inglourious Basterds fame, with Johannes Krisch (Finsterworld, Revanche), André Szymanski, Friederike Becht, Johann von Bülow and Mathis Reinhardt, and is dedicated to the late great stage actor, Gert Voss, who is spectacular as the unsung real-life hero State Attorney General Fritz Bauer.

"He was bad, he was trouble and he was beautiful," remarks a former lover, one of many tossed overboard to the choppy waters of his life. In the lens of Bruce Weber's documentary, however, he's still beautiful, a survivor wearing the scars of a turbulent life to a fashion shoot, the stark black and white picking out every scuff and wrinkle like it was earned. What we first see as a "seamy looking drugstore cowboy-cum-derelict," in the words of Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman, takes on a ravaged grace through the course of Let's Get Lost. In part that’s due to the hushed spell of his singing voice on ballads from the American songbook but mostly it's because of Weber's gaze.>> - Sean Axmaker...

Best festival
Trash was born at Cannes in 1999, when the idea struck me that the best way to cover this polymorphously perverse festival was through a diary. So it's probably in that environment that my column has thrived most. It coincided with the rise of the "festival circuit", and I was fortunate to have the willing co-operation of the Observer and the festivals themselves in getting to cover so many of them.
I still recall the jolt of a morning vodka with Alan Parker in Moscow where, because his Pink Floyd film The Wall was the most famous bootleg of the Soviet era, he is some kind of deity. Marrakech is a wonderful setting for a film festival and I shall cherish an afternoon with Martin Scorsese there, even though he spilt...

We're in Top 10 season! Hooray! And that means it's already time for the first elimination show, which is an excruciating 60-minute death march. Here are the 25 things I took from it. They're also the 25 things you should be thinking, verbatim.
1. Phillip Phillips' cameo in the opening lineup was admittedly hilarious. The guy is effing endearing, even if he is still wearing Kohl's t-shirts from 1991 and expecting my mother not to donate them to AmVets. He's a cool guy. More on this scintillating discovery below.
2. Jimmy Iovine on Janelle Arthur: "This girl's not going anywhere!" But she just said she's "gone!" Sad.
3. Jimmy Iovine on Angie Miller: "Doing 'I Surrender'... was really good. It wasn't as good as some of the judges thought it was, in my opinion." Ok. Now I love Jimmy Iovine. Because that was the staidest song choice ever, and Angie's performance was downright nondescript compared to Kelly Clarkson's.

The 30th edition of the Miami International Film Festival, produced and presented by Miami Dade College, will commemorate its anniversary with a 29-day "Countdown Retrospective" film series. The retrospective will consist of screenings at Mdc's Tower Theater of one film each consecutive night that represents each festival year, and it will feature special guests such as director David Frankel ("The Devil Wears Prada," "Hope Springs") and filmmaker Bruce Weber ("Let's Get Lost"). Miff executive director Jaie Laplante said, "What a treat it has been to look through our back catalogues, reliving the excitement of Miff's great moments, and recharting the growth from the early triumphs of our founding fathers to the new era of our modern festival." Beginning with a rare 35mm screening of Pedro Almodóvar's "Dark Habits (Entre tinieblas)," the retrospective will kick off Jan. 26....

When the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is revealed on June 8th, you might find that Beck and Bat for Lashes' "Let's Get Lost" is a nice little song, and apparently the two artists may be planning to work together again.
According to Billboard, Bat for Lashes (Natasha Khan) is considering involving Beck (Beck Hanson) in her next album.
"It turned out great, and I'm really proud of it," she said of their work in "Let's Get Lost."
When asked whether she wanted Beck on her next album, she said "Yes, possibly. He's got great creative ideas."

Race is sexy. And sex is racy. Is it any wonder that our society seems fascinated, obsessed even, with their combination? Consider the latest photo shoot by Mikael Jansson titled Let's Get Lost, in the current issue of Interview Magazine. The photos are edgy. They're sexually charged, literally (and symbolically) hot and wet. They're also undeniably racially provocative. The white model (Daria Werbowy) is apparently "Lost", at least that's what the title of the spread implies. But lost in what? In the heat of the moment? Perhaps, but the racial composition is designed to draw attention to itself. Not only is it not coincidental that Daria is surrounded by Black models, it is the central point: White Daria is lost in a sea of Blackness. Are such images...

The powers-that-be who preside over "Twilight," "Lost" and the MTV Movie Awards really ought to get together and coordinate better. There's far too much news today.
As the hours slide by, the "Eclipse" soundtrack grows. Two new artists have been revealed since our last post. Three, really, if you want to be a jerk about it. First up is a collaboration between Beck and Bat For Lashes, on "Let's Get Lost." MySpace doesn't say it, but my guess is that this is a cover of the Elliott Smith song from the album "A Basement On The Hill." Beck is a noted fan of Smith's; he participated in a benefit held in the singer/songwriter's honor following his untimely death at the age of 34 in 2003. Also confirmed for the soundtrack is New York City-based indie rock outfit Vampire Weekend, on the song "Jonathan Low." Check out music from all of these artists after the jump.

We already knew about Muse, and, then, throughout the day on Wednesday (May 12), we gradually added even more names to the list — Vampire Weekend, Beck and the Bravery, to rattle off just a few. And now, finally, we know it all: every artist that will contribute a song to the much-anticipated "Eclipse" soundtrack.
Yes, over the course of seven very long hours, the folks at MySpace Music gradually revealed the list of artists and songs that would appear on the album, due June 8. Now, that list is complete.
From the looks of things, it's shaping up to be a pretty excellent affair. In addition to the previously announced artists, we get a whole lot of indie (Florence and the Machine, Metric, Sia and Band of Horses); genuine fist-pumping, throat-ripping rock and roll (from Jack White...

We already knew Muse were onboard for the much-hyped "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" soundtrack, but on Wednesday (May 12), we learned who else would be joining them ... albeit very slowly.
Yes, the folks over at MySpace Music — perhaps taking a page out of the Bonnaroo playbook — decided to reveal the names of each artist (and song) on the album individually, with a new name being unveiled every 30 minutes. And given that there are 15 spots to be revealed, well, we hope you're not doing anything for the next seven-and-a-half hours.
Anyway, at the time of this writing, seven acts and songs have been revealed, a list that includes Vampire Weekend (who contribute a song called "Jonathan Low"), Beck (who duets with Bat for Lashes on "Let's Get Lost...

Walker gets up to speed with movies
Following in the footsteps of Bruce Weber (Let's Get Lost), Anton Corbijn (Control) and Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy), I hear the latest photographer to move from stills to the film camera is the extravagant Tim Walker. Known for his lavish locations and modern baroque style, Walker is shooting his film debut, a short called The Lost Explorer, based on a novel by Patrick McGrath. The film will star Toby Stephens and Jessica Hynes, right, as well as 14-year-old newcomer Olympia Campbell as an adolescent girl who discovers an otherworldly explorer at the end of her garden.
Walker's film is a new project for producers Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh, the team behind the impressive urban drama Shifty. After the stripped-down realism of that film, this richly imaginative work represents a new challenge for the producing duo: one scene calls for a room filled with hundreds of canaries.

On this week's all-new episode of Private Practice, Addison and Pete did the deed (several times), even though they are both admittedly in love with other people.
Meanwhile, Naomi, Dell and Violet are moving on in their own ways. Read through our review of "Love Bites" and let us know if you liked the episode and why.
Also, visit our Private Practice music section for a look at the singles heard throughout this and other recent episodes. We've listed a couple of examples below:
Tingsek - "Burned to the Ground" Billie Holiday - "Crazy He Calls Me" Chet Baker - "Let's Get Lost" The King Cole Trio - "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons"...

I really love "Lost." I am also quite fond of my children, and no longer do I have to choose between the two on a weekly basis. Tonight, my boys -- recent young and dedicated converts to the cult -- and I will be gleefully attending an intimate "Lost" premiere viewing party complete with our own "Apollo Bars" provided by my lovely wife. As our shared excitement builds, here are some TV Island Discs to celebrate our time on the Island. Let's Get Lost - Chet Baker Lost Cause - Beck Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles Island Of Lost Souls - Blondie Lost In The Flood - Bruce Springsteen Island Girl - Elton John Kate - Ben Folds Five Lost! - Coldplay Lost? - Coldplay Island In The Sun - Weezer Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da - The Beatles Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple We Lost Our...

As a photographer, Bruce Weber's impact has been unmistakable: He's shot covers for every top magazine, ushered in a new era of mainstream homoerotica with his Abercombie & Fitch campaigns, and immortalized in portraits some of the biggest stars and supermodels of the last few decades. As a filmmaker, though, his work has been harder to appreciate simply because it's less available, a problem the Sundance Channel hopes to rectify this month by bringing eight of his films to television for the first time ever (including his Oscar-nominated Chet Baker documentary, Let's Get Lost).
I spoke to the legendary photographer and raconteur for Movieline, and discussed his films, his famous subjects, and photography in the age of digital narcissism.
