- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: What in the hell is "the Dead"?
- Jay Austin: You wouldn't understand.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Try me.
- Jay Austin: The Grateful Dead.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: The Grateful Dead?
- Jay Austin: Grateful Dead.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: I don't understand.
- Jay Austin: [sarcastically] That's a surprise.
- [Lt.Col Caldwell has just beaten up the bully in the bar who had started a fight with him]
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: You see these little oak leaves?
- [points to the silver oak leaves on his lapels]
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: They're silver. That means I'm a lieutenant colonel. If they were gold, THEN I'd be a major! You understand?
- Bully in Bar: [grunts & nods] Yes sir!
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: That's good. Because the next time you see an officer of the Army, you'll be able to recognize his rank... and he won't get pissed off, and accidentally hurt you. Understand?
- Bully in Bar: Yes sir.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Good.
- [Lt-Col. Caldwell punches him and walks out of the bar]
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Now, are you sure you want to have a fight? Because I'm only gonna use my thumb.
- Bully in Bar: Thumb?
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: My right thumb. Left one's much too powerful for you.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: We used to joke that being in the army was not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: She's seeing Jay Austin. You remember him?
- Sgt. Major Ross Maclure: Ain't he the guy who threw Lawrence in the pokey?
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Yeah, that's the one.
- Sgt. Major Ross Maclure: I never liked Lawrence. He's a monkey dick.
- Jay Austin: He's gonna take one look at you and me talking and he's gonna figure out right off what's going on.
- Donna Caldwell: What's going on?
- Jay Austin: How attracted you are to me. You'll have him climbing the walls. Then later, when he gets you alone, he's gonna tell you what a jerk I am, and he's gonna order you to stay away from me.
- Donna Caldwell: No. My father doesn't order me to do anything. We have an agreement.
- Jay Austin: He'll break it.
- Donna Caldwell: No he won't. We made it when I was 7 years old.
- Jay Austin: You were never 7 years old.
- Jay Austin: [re: the dead drop] Right in front of God and everybody.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: It's always the most successful way. None of that covert shit.
- Donna Caldwell: Say something.
- Jay Austin: What?
- Donna Caldwell: That's a start.
- Jay Austin: I'm Inspector Jay Austin, San Francisco Police Department.
- Donna Caldwell: [laughs] You didn't do that right.
- Jay Austin: I didn't?
- Donna Caldwell: [shakes her head] No, you're supposed to show me your ID.
- Jay Austin: Oh. Close the door.
- [she hesitates]
- Jay Austin: Close the door.
- [she does so; he rings the bell and she opens again; this time he holds the badge up before his face]
- Jay Austin: Hello, I'm Inspector Austin, San Francisco Police Department.
- [as she smiles:]
- Jay Austin: I'm looking for Colonel Caldwell.
- Donna Caldwell: This is where he lives. He works somewhere else.
- [shakes her head]
- Jay Austin: I figured that.
- Donna Caldwell: You wanna wait on the porch, Inspector Jay Austin?
- Jay Austin: No.
- [shakes his head]
- Jay Austin: I wanna come in.
- [nods]
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: You're not going out dressed like that, are you?
- Donna Caldwell: Like what?
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Well, you can see right through that dress. You might just as well go out without one.
- Donna Caldwell: There's a thought.
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: [to Julius] Now why don't you ask him how he won the Medal of Honor?
- Sgt. Major Ross Maclure: How old are you, Julius?
- Julius: Eight.
- Sgt. Major Ross Maclure: You want to live to be nine?
- Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Obviously he didn't win it for charm.
- Sgt. Major Ross Maclure: You open your mouth one more time, and I'll shove your head so far up your ass, you'll be talking out of your armpit.
- Jay Austin: You know what I'd like?
- [smiles]
- Jay Austin: I'd like you to resist arrest. Just a little. God, I'd really like that.
- [cuffs one hand]
- Jay Austin: You have the right to remain silent, you have the right to an attorn -
- [Col. Paul Lawrence elbows him in the face with free arm]
- Howard Buckely: Do it now, or I'll fuckin' blow him away, I swear it!
- Jay Austin: [calmly] Don't give him your gun.
- Howard Buckely: Give me the goddamn gun! You wanna die, cop?
- Jay Austin: No. Do you? Put the gun away.
- Howard Buckely: Gimme the gun! I'm gonna do it!
- Jay Austin: [advancing slowly] Think about it, pal. If you shoot me, he's gonna shoot you.
- Howard Buckely: [looks back at the other officer] Huh?
- Jay Austin: Keep your eyes on me. If you take your eyes off me, I guarantee you I'll kill you.
- Howard Buckely: I'll do it!
- Jay Austin: Either way, pal, you're dead.
- [continues steady advance]
- Howard Buckely: I'm gonna shoot!
- Jay Austin: Yeah, you keep saying that. I don't think you're gonna do it.
- Jay Austin: You look great!
- Donna Caldwell: Some people say I look like my father.
- Jay Austin: Christ, what a thought!
