A great show !!
niltonem29 September 2008
Major Dad was a wonderful show !! Funny and lovable !! I love Gerald Mcrainey and everything he has done. Polly and the girls are pleasant and cute. A very wholesome and family oriented show, wish it was still on !!!! They depicted the US Marine Corp with respect and admiration, which was wonderful. TV nowadays is very lacking in positive wholesome entertainment. They were able to deal with several issue like child abuse and family issues such as step children etc in a very tasteful way. Lt Holowachuk is hilarious and Sgt Alba Bricker is a scream !!! I particularly enjoyed the episode that Holowachuk revealed that he didn't drink, and he gained the respect of his fellow Marines regardless.

Funny, with a twist
engelbrechtjohann23 April 2019
The first three seasons are definitely the watch worth. The Costa Negra story-line in the first season is on the same level as the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. If you don't get the reference, watch both series. It becomes quite clear early in Season 4 that they started running out of ideas. Most American series run into this at the same time, with many overstaying their welcome for several seasons too long.

Why can't you buy this great show????
HelenMary27 April 2014
This was one of my fav TV shows, and a favourite with my family too. We could quote the lines and even now "I twinkled, Sir!" is a guaranteed laugh with my cousin and me. I loved the silliness, the seriousness, the general humour and the Marine stuff... wholesome and fun for all the family but still tackling some sensible issues.

Yes some of the episodes were a bit cheesy and full of that shouty one liner talking that is prevalent in US sitcoms which always gets good old predictable canned-sounding laughter - especially with the 'stage school' style children's performances, but that didn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the show. It was comedy, from a more naïve and family-suitable time; no bad language, no sleaze, no overt sexual innuendo or content. Nice. Laugh out loud funny.

Gerald McRaney was superb... oh I just loved everything about this show. Is there really nowhere you can buy it on DVD?

Majorly Amusing

For an 80s/early 90s show, Major Dad was amusing. It is only a sitcom; it's not supposed to be taken that seriously. If you enjoyed shows like Coach or Cheers, then you'll enjoy Major Dad. People always talk about how hard it is to make a good military show. I think they never watched an episode of M*A*S*H in their sheltered lives. Likewise, this was fairly successful. It was a show that the family and I could sit around and watch, and that's saying something. Family TV has hit rock bottom unfortunately. So if you're looking for a family favorite, tune into Major Dad. It's not the funniest show you'll ever watch, but it's really cute. Enjoy!

Smart and Intelligent show
robertdlar23 September 2021
Unlike most Sitcoms which usually feature a dumpy idiotic husband and occasionally a wife who was just about as dumb, this show featured 2 intelligent human beings from different sides learning to love each other and get along, while being funny and entertaining. The humor didn't rely on stupid jokes or over the top antics but on real world family dynamics.

Absolutely love this show!

I remember this show when it was on in the late 80s and early 90s it was always one of my favorite shows, and through all these years it was never released on DVD or any kind of downloading platform? But finally Netflix released the whole series and this has been the best three weeks of my life! Well maybe that's a little too dramatic but it's been really good reliving all this, this is when TV was good there wasn't so many politics and crap it was just good TV a family sitcom something you rarely find anymore something you can sit down with your children and watch and not have to worry about seeing something or hearing something that they shouldn't hear or see.

I would honestly love to see a reunion but in reality where would it go? All the actors are still thankfully here but coming up with a good story idea would be a tough one, still one of my favorite series of all time.

Good TV-show, positive look on military life
Trond_E23 July 1999
"Major Dad" takes a humorous look on the challenges facing typical military families, in this case the family of a US Marine Major. The characters are credible, the acting is above average for these kinds of TV-series, and most importantly, it`s funny. Despite the fact that the series is a comedy, it also shows the difficulties and sacrifices necessary to combine family life and faithful dedication to the military way of life. The series is very pro military(which is good), and is hereby recommended.

A pure CBS hit!
This show, in my opinion, is a pure CBS hit! Despite the fact that I've never seen every episode, I still enjoyed it. There are many episodes that I enjoyed. One of them was where the girls (Chelsea Hertford, Nicole Dubuc, Marisa Ryan) perform "Side By Side" in some competition. If you want to know why, you'll have to have seen it for yourself. I will say that I did laugh at the last lines of that episode. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that everyone always gave a good performance, the production design was spectacular, the costumes were well-designed, and the writing was always very strong. In conclusion, even though it can be seen on USA now, I strongly recommend you catch it just in case it goes off the air for good.

Funny Show
unclearn00714 October 2021
I don't know how an actual Marine, can say that this show puts down the Marines. It does NO such thing. It's just a comedy, and nothing else.

I thought this show got funnier, when General Craig and Sgt. Bricker were added to the show. I enjoy watching this again, now that Netflix has put it up on their servers. Right now I'm watching the 2nd season, and glad that I can enjoy it again!

Wonder cast. Everyone makes the show, even Casey makes the show funny. I hope it stays around, so that I can watch it over and over again!

TV when it was truly fun to watch
fsmao24 August 2007
This was a series about our finest fighting forces, the United States Marines. However, it showed a funny softer side of those very tough heroes. That made all the more reason to watch as they found themselves in some pretty strange situations. As with all Marine leaders, the Major would resolve each and every problem with leadership, compassion and honesty just as real Marines do all the time. Therefore, this made TV watching enjoyable for the entire family. We need shows like that today that portray those type of ethics and values. I can not wait for this series to come out on DVD. As far as I am concerned, the sooner the better.

Good TV Series !
jhunsucker-2567113 October 2021
This was a great series and I wish it would've lasted longer. The actors were really good and the story was really fun to watch. I definitely recommend it. I think a lot of people who watch will really like it and enjoy it too. I'm glad it's finally on Netflix so I was able to watch the The last two seasons. I never saw them before so it was great to see them now.

I watched this show as a kid and loved it then. After 14 years in the Marine Corps, I still love this show! There are a lot of relatable moments. Even my wife and kids love this show.

Major Entertainment
jmack-650057 January 2022
Major Dad was a great sitcom, wholesome and amusing. It had family values and showed a proper family working things out, no matter what the obstacles. There were obstacles, much like real life, but as a family unit, they stuck together and pulled through them together. And yes, I laughed. Often. I have not spontaneously laughed, literally, for years. I just got Netflix a few months ago and I began watching it from the beginning and couldn't stop. It touched my heart and very much made me smile.

I noticed that the stories were declining a bit, losing a little steam as it went on and it made me sad but I still enjoyed it very much. I think Casey was one of my favorites. The BIGGEST star was the littlest actor. Some of her lines were a riot! The whole cast was great. Near the very end I saw a couple of inconsistencies though, where an idea or storyline was introduced and then not immediately followed through on. (It was easy for me to see. I loved it so much I was binging it, watching 3 or 4 or 5 episodes at a time.) But then suddenly it abruptly ENDED.

Rumor has it that a new head of something took over and immediately moved the show from Monday night to Friday. Put it in the graveyard, then wondered why it died. I love it when people decide for us what we can love and watch. Sherman Hemsley, it was reported, was eating breakfast at his table and picked up the morning paper and read that The Jefferson's had been cancelled. After 11 years, that's how he was treated. Read it in the paper. When THEY want a show dead, it dies. Major Dad died. That was a bad move. It was a very nice show. (Lack of reality? C'mon! What do you want? A sitcom, a laugh, to get away for awhile. Lighten up, don't be so cynical.) Major dad did what it was supposed to do, and it did it well. It was a great show, it was loved, and it is missed. This is Must-See TV. If you want something clean and fun, please try it. I'm glad I did.

I love this show. I am not a Marine but I am a Marine mom. From a civilians perspective I feel they honor and respect the Corps. This is a comedy TV show so you have t take it with a grain of salt and of course it is not going to exactly replicate in the Corps but they do show the utmost respect for the Corps and hold the Marines up as hero's. I love that the Major loves his step daughters as his own. In my opinion this shows the heart of the Marine. Marines are bad ass but with a heart of gold. This show is an example of the life we should all be living. Too bad there are not more shows like this one. I love the USMC and every man and women who serve in the Corps. Thank you for your dedication and self sacrifice. I feel safer knowing the Marines are guarding this wonderful country.

Major Dud
yonko10 January 2002
Major Dad was a dull and boring show. Ocasionally the show had its moments and you would catch yourself smiling. Most of the time, though, when this show came on you had to scramble for the remote. Most military shows are bad, and this was a prime example. Hogan's Heroes and MASH were good shows, Major Dad was a major dud.
