Sex & Nudity

  • Two men are briefly seen humping each other on the sidewalk.
  • women and men in skintight gym attire are seen; topless men are seen.
  • Two men make crude sexual remarks about a dream one of them had. Nothing too racy or explicit.
  • Two characters initiate passionate kissing and taking off their tops in an elevator (no nudity onscreen) but stop when the elevator reaches their destination.
  • Julie says that "on the third date, I am going to screw your eyes blue".
  • Brief graphic frontal nudity of a female toward the end of the film. Breasts and crotch in full view.

Violence & Gore

  • Two unnamed women wear arctic gear and carry large machine guns.
  • Rapid gunfire is heard over a telephone line, implying that an unseen character has been murdered.
  • A waitress has her arm roughly grabbed against her will.
  • A cook holds a patron at gunpoint and interrogates him about a telephone call he has heard.
  • An elderly lady holds a man at gunpoint but then lowers the gun when she realizes who it is.
  • A man is caught in a nuclear explosion. He screams from the intensity and attempts to cover his eyes, but his eyes melt through his hands and he is vapourized. Not particularly lengthy or violent, but still quite disturbing.
  • There are many strong intense scenes of rioting, many people are shot, assaulted, burned, blood and gore can be seen.
  • Bloody dead bodies can be seen.
  • Much of the violence is condensed into the latter half of the film, which features a traffic jam and shows depictions of extreme violence including a man's body crushed to death under a car tire, a man's feet being shot at, and people being pushed in front of/between cars as they try to flee.

Profanity

  • 19 uses of "f*ck", one use of "c*nt", one use of "screw", uses of "damn", "oh god", "idiot".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A man becomes violently drunk and appears to have also taken drugs; at one point he smashes a wine bottle and attempts to drink from the broken neck.
  • Signs advertising wine and beer are seen in brief background shots.
  • A woman takes a Valium to get to sleep. The Valium bottle is briefly seen. An elderly lady offers a man "diet pills" (speed) to wake the woman up, but he declines the offer.
  • Characters can be seen smoking only during the first half of the film.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film being about a nuclear attack could frighten viewers.
  • There are multiple character deaths implied and explicitly shown onscreen.
  • Some brief moments of extreme tension, including a disturbing incident where a man at a diner yells about nuclear war and the other diners begin stockpiling cans into a truck so they can flee on an airplane.
  • The entire film is very tense and largely follows a young man struggling to rescue his girlfriend before a nuclear war takes place. Lots of running, panicking, police chases, and a tense, fast-paced soundtrack throughout.
  • The gym rat/helicopter pilot has a boyfriend named Leslie who he wants to bring with him. The pilot is later seen flying the copter to rescue the main characters, but he has a severely bloody face and is shaken-up; Leslie is gone, implying his death.
  • An elderly woman cries when her estranged husband buys his granddaughter's boyfriend a tube steak.
  • The riot scenes are intense and may disturb young viewers.

Violence & Gore

  • A man squirts gasoline on two police officers. One of them shoots a gun and catches on fire. The other officer catches on fire, and the gas station explodes, also killing the gas station owner.
  • Two major supporting characters die onscreen (Wilson and his sister, and the gym rat/helicopter pilot). Their faces are shown bloody and bruised.
  • The two main characters die at the end of the film after their pilot crashes a helicopter into a tar pit. As the copter fills with the natural asphalt, which will drown the characters, they discuss their fates as a bright flash goes off, indicating that a direct nuclear hit has killed them.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The ending is very depressing.
  • Two elderly characters drive away to spend time together, despite the fact that they will be killed by a nuclear strike. Their granddaughter, unaware of this, blissfully wishes them goodbye.
