"Avalon" is a superbly entertaining family drama from Barry Levinson's 'Baltimore' series (which includes "Diner" and "Liberty Heights"). It is an extremely rare quality of film, where nothing seems out of place or overdone, all performances are even better than expected from the actors involved, and the photography and direction is flawless.

The film's superior quality likely stems from the the fact the Levinson both wrote and produced this story, which is partially autobiographical. It is very much a story about the Krichinskys, and virtually all the main characters are members of the family. "Avalon" contains two stand-out performances. That of Armin Mueller-Stahl as the head of the family, and a very young Elijah Wood as (possibly) Levinson's character.
