The ride in Florida originally opened to the public on May 2, 1991. It closed its doors to the past, present, and future on March 30, 2007. The attraction in California closed on Sept 3, 2007. Nothing has been said as of yet for the ride in Japan.
The ride film, along with the lobby monitor and pre-show footage, were included as special features on the 2009 DVD release of Back to the Future (1985).
Michael J. Fox was asked to reprise his role as Marty McFly in the ride as Doc's personal assistant and test volunteer, but he turned it down. He can still be seen in the queue video, within archive footage from the Back to the Future trilogy.
Although Brown's wife, Clara Clayton, does not appear in the ride's footage, a picture of her with Doc can be seen in his office in the pre-show video as well as in the pre-flight briefing room.
The DeLorean uses the "Gale-Zemeckis Coordinates," a reference of the writer of Back to the Future (1985) Bob Gale, and the film's director Robert Zemeckis.
