One of the most overexposed classic rock songs ever is Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” — and yet, some fans miss its meaning. Jon Bon Jovi revealed the tune was inspired by one of the defining political ideas of the 1980s. On top of that, “Livin’ on a Prayer” was influenced by the singer’s romantic life.
How Ronald Reagan inspired Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’
On the surface, “Livin’ on a Prayer” is a song about a couple trying to make a life for themselves while they don’t have much money. It’s easy to understand the tune as a simple self-empowerment anthem. However, Jon Bon Jovi himself connected it to the political milieu of the 1980s.
The BBC reports that the singer said “Livin’ on a Prayer” was about the economic policies of President Ronald Reagan. “I wrote that song during the Reagan era...

Salman Khan’s Bull Produced By Karan Johar Is Shelved. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Salman Khan is finally out of Karan Johar’s upcoming Dharma film, and the project, which was reportedly titled Bull and was to be helmed by Shershaah director Vishnu Vardhan, now stands shelved. Many reasons have been attributed to this decision, the primary one being Bhai himself.
Reports suggest that Salman was very keen on the part. But here is where the problem starts. When he gets too involved with a character, he starts getting involved in the process of filmmaking as well.
Salman Khan and his inputs are not always welcomed by the team, and this is where the differences between them turn into ego battles. It seems like something happened with Bull as well. An exclusive report by Times Now suggests that the team was fed up with Salman Khan’s constant nagging about the film.

The couple claims Daisy — who was runner-up on Season 2 of Rock of Love, which featured Poison’s lead singer Bret Michaels — has been harassing the pair in and around their Las Vegas apartment complex.
According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Mariah and Tom alleged that Daisy began stalking them in January.
The 90 Day Fiance stars told police that Daisy chased Tom down in their neighborhood, got in his space, sniffed him, and declared her love for him.
Tom also claimed that Daisy would call out his name and frequently invite him inside for dinner.

With eleven feature films under Wes Anderson’s belt, we can now quickly add another. While the director’s recent batch of Roald Dahl adaptations were released as short films––so the first could compete for the Oscars––now that Anderson has indeed taken home his first Academy Award, he’s realizing his complete vision for the project.
Just after he nabbed his Oscar, Netflix announced they will release Wes Anderson’s anthology feature The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, combining all four shorts and adding a new original song by Jarvis Cocker, this Friday on the platform. Just as another Netflix anthology release, Coens’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, is considered a feature, from this day henceforth let it be known The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More is Wes Anderson’s twelfth feature.

"You should be able to make a scene come alive in the reader's mind." Huzzah! Now that Wes Anderson is a certified Oscar winner, Netflix has released a brand new trailer for his four shorts streaming on Netflix. Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the Oscar yesterday for Best Live-Action Short. Adapted from the Roald Dahl story, the film originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last fall. Netflix also commissioned Anderson to make three other shorts based on Roald Dahl stories - each one an intriguing little tale with just a few characters. The most famous one (and the Oscar winner), Henry Sugar, stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, and Saif Mohsen. The Swan stars Rupert Friend, Ralph Fiennes, and Asa Jennings. Poison stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley. The Rat Catcher stars Ralph Fiennes,...

Wes Anderson took home his first-ever Academy Award on Sunday night (March 10th), winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, one of four Roald Dahl adaptations he made for Netflix in 2023. Now, the streaming giant has announced a repackaging of the four short films into an anthology entitled The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, due out March 15th.
In addition to The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Anderson and Netflix’s The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison round out the titular “three more.” Each short pulls from a star-studded pool of actors, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and more appearing and reappearing throughout the collection. What’s more, the anthology will feature an original song by frequent collaborator Jarvis Cocker, as Anderson revealed in an official statement (via TheWrap).

Wes Anderson has won his first-ever Oscar. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar took home the gold for Best Live Action Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards, marking a much-deserved victory for the eight-time nominated filmmaker. Based on the 1977 Roald Dahl work of the same name, the film is part of a collection of four shorts — alongside The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison — directed by Anderson for Netflix.
Anderson has been thinking of adapting Henry Sugar, a story that captivated him as a child, for two decades. There was only one problem: The filmmaker struggled with how to tell the story without using Dahl’s magical words. And then it finally clicked — he didn’t have to. “When I finally had the moment of inspiration, the idea was: ‘I am equally interested in the way Dahl tells the story as I am in the story itself,’ ”...

Hazbin Hotel’s Musical Storytelling
This….. Is musical storytelling at its finest. Spawning from a 2019 viral YouTube pilot, A24, Amazon Prime, and creator Vivienne Medrano’s Hazbin Hotel has quickly proven itself to be a massive success; boasting the largest global debut for an animated series on Prime Video….. Ever and scoring rave reviews from both critics and audiences, with Decider’s Raven Brunner praising the “queer, raunchy, and fun” animated series for its “exciting character arcs” and “thrilling story.”
Indeed, one doesn’t have to look too hard at Hazbin Hotel’s unique animation and art style, shockingly dense plot and lore, and unabashedly vulgar sense of humor to see why it’s amassed such a large audience so quickly.

After eight nominations for six different films he has made, director Wes Anderson has finally won his first Oscar.
Receiving the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems unconventional for both the category, which normally awards emerging filmmakers, and Anderson himself, who was best known till this point for directing features such as “Asteroid City” (which happened to also be in awards contention this season.)
His win was over fellow nominees “The After,” from director Misan Harriman, “Invincible,” from director Vincent René-Lortie, “Knight of Fortune,” from director Lasse Lyskjær Noer, and “Red, White and Blue” from director Nazrin Choudhury.
Anderson’s Oscar achievement comes as a bit of a full circle moment for the auteur, coming just over two decades since his career as a professional filmmaker kicked off with the premiere of his short “Bottle Rocket...

Wes Anderson is driving through the Spanish countryside with his eight-year-old daughter, Freya; it’s her school holiday. At the end of our half-hour phone conversation, he reaches Barcelona. He has always loved making shorts, clocking a dozen since his career launched with 1993 Sundance entry “Bottle Rocket,” the short that inspired his eventual debut feature of the same name, when we first met. Now, he has an Oscar frontrunner, Venice premiere “The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar,” the first and longest (39 minutes) of four increasingly strange Roald Dahl shorts currently on Netflix. “Henry Sugar” is notably the highest-rated live-action short of 2023 on Letterboxd.

Mumbai, Feb 13 (Ians) ‘Inside Edge’ actor Tanuj Virwani, who recently got married to his longtime partner Tanya Jacob, will not be able to celebrate Valentine’s Day with his wife this year as he is busy with work.

At the end of 2022, I was given the Goliath task of explaining to our readers (and much of our staff) why the internet had gone completely feral over the animated design of the Devil Daddy himself, Lucifer Morningstar, on "Hazbin Hotel." Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano debuted the animated musical pilot for "Hazbin Hotel" on YouTube in 2019, funded entirely by Medrano's Patreon followers and brought to life completely by freelance animators. It quickly went viral and generated a diehard fanbase, one that exists on the fringes of fandom circles and well outside of four-quadrant entertainment.
It's adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons." It's as raunchy as "South Park," but caters to a queerer audience base. It boasts a Broadway cast as impressive as "Central Park," but without the "Hamilton" name recognition to excite your mom. "Hazbin Hotel" is what happens when you grow up watching...

Wes Anderson has recruited his next star-studded cast for a new movie led by Bill Murray, Michael Cera, and Benicio del Toro, reports Deadline.
Anderson co-wrote the film with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. Details are officially being kept under wraps, but it’s set to go into production this year.
Last June, Anderson gave insight into the movie during an interview with Le Monde. “My next feature film will be linear, with Benicio Del Toro in every shot,” he said. “I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”
Recent reports have also said the plot revolves around “three key characters,” with other Anderson regulars playing smaller roles.
While the currently untitled movie will mark Cera’s first time working with Anderson, Murray and del Toro have previously worked with the filmmaker.

Iconoclastic filmmaker Todd Haynes has made a name for himself crafting stories dealing with sexuality, discrimination and pop culture. Let’s take a look back at all nine of his narrative feature films, ranked worst to best.
Haynes first came to the attention of art house audiences with “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” (1988), a 43-minute short which used Barbie dolls to create a startling poignant, eerie biopic. This led to his feature debut, “Poison” (1991), a milestone in the New Queer Cinema that told three different narratives exploring our reactions to human carnality.
He reaped his first Oscar nomination for “Far From Heaven” (Best Original Screenplay in 2002), a meticulous recreation of Douglas Sirk melodramas centering on a 1950’s Connecticut housewife (Julianne Moore) who falls in love with her black gardener (Dennis Haysbert) after her husband (Dennis Quaid) comes out of the closet. In addition to Haynes’ bid, the film also competed...

Haynes recalled his attempts to screen “Superstar,” which used Barbie dolls as puppets to tell a satirically biographical story about pop music legend Karen Carpenter, in New York after graduating film school. He credited critics with responding to his...

On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
From Cate Blanchett’s meet-cute hat-tip to shopgirl Rooney Mara in “Carol” and Julianne Moore’s farewell on a train platform to Dennis Haysbert at the end of “Far from Heaven” to, now, Natalie Portman’s straight-to-the-camera monologue as an actress playing an actress who is also playing another role in “May December,” Todd Haynes might not see his images as destined-to-be-iconic while on set as we do on our screens. At first.
That’s partly because, for the Oscar-nominated filmmaker upon whom IndieWire Honors will bestow the Vanguard Award on December 6 in Los Angeles, “every film has been a tremendous challenge in terms of resources and time and financing. I’ve always felt that I have...

Remember the band Remember Lizards? Well, technically, they’re not real. But, the duo might have felt eerily familiar if you caught last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live — hosted by Jason Momoa with musical guest Tate McRae.
During a Weekend Update segment, host Colin Jost welcomed the episode’s “backup musical guest” to the studio — an act that could be immediately clocked as a “blatant rip-off” of pop-rock band Imagine Dragons. Played by cast members Andrew Dismukes and James Austin Johnson, Remember Lizards acknowledged that they occupied a similar genre as Imagine Dragons — that being, “uplifting, kid-friendly, hip-hop-slash-arena rock with a pump-up edge.” However, they were quick to clarify that, while Imagine Dragons is “Christian-curious,” Remember Lizards is “decidedly Christian.”
The duo performed snippets of hilarious parody songs such as “Chemicals (Poison),” and shared that they will soon be playing fictional venue The Cylinder — not to be confused with Las Vegas’ Msg Sphere.

Taking its title from the 61 names found in a notebook when he was arrested, 61: Scorecard Killer is based rather loosely on the crimes of Randy Kraft. Kraft was convicted of the rape and murder of sixteen young men and is suspected of fifty-one other killings. Kraft was arrested in 1983 after police pulled him over for a suspected DUI and found a dead body in his car’s passenger seat.
The biggest difference between fact and fiction is that directors Poison Rouge and Domiziano Cristopharo have updated the film to the present day. We see this right away in the prelude, as Randy, uses his smartphone to print out photos of murder victims to post on his wall and dance naked in front of.
And this is as good a time as any to mention...

Since the beginning of his career, Todd Haynes has made films about two things: fame and transgression. Born in 1961 to a Los Angeles family, Haynes received his Bfa in film from Bard College, where he made a short that set the tone for his filmography. Acted out using Barbie dolls, “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” is an unauthorized story of the real-life pop singer and her struggles with anorexia, which is permanently out of circulation thanks to a music copyright lawsuit. Looking at it today through bootleg, the movie’s study of the crushing effects of fame — and hiding misery and suffering behind a happy, plastic façade — feels like the crucible for the artist’s later fixations.
As Haynes graduated from shorts and moved to feature filmmaking, his work began splitting into two types of films. The first type can be described as the movies about ordinary people whose unhappiness...

Few directors show their cinematic influences as readily as Todd Haynes. Just watch one of his movies, and the filmmakers that helped shape his style — Douglas Sirk and Nicolas Roeg, to name two — become incredibly apparent. His stylized melodrama and favored themes of social taboos and celebrity carry the DNA of both directors. But at the same time? His work is entirely his own.
Born in Los Angeles during 1961, Haynes studied art at Brown and cinema at Bard College, where he made the short film that first brought him notoriety. Made entirely with dolls, 1987’s “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” tells the story of the titular popular pop singer and her struggles with anorexia. Its unauthorized nature, unflattering portrayal of Carpenter’s brother and music partner Richard, and unlicensed use of the Carpenters’ music made it the subject of a lawsuit, and it remains withdrawn from circulation. This story about Christine Vachon first appeared in the College Issue of TheWrap’s magazine.
Over the course of more than 30 years and 100 films, Christine Vachon has become one of the most impactful producers of independent film — and as the artistic director of the Mfa program at Stony Brook Manhattan, one of the most intriguing film educators as well. She founded her company, Killer Films, with fellow New York-based producer Pamela Koffler in 1996, five years into a career that had begun with Todd Haynes’ feature debut, “Poison,” and would go on to include every one of Haynes’ movies, among them “Velvet Goldmine,” “Far From Heaven,” “Carol” and the upcoming “May December.”
Vachon’s other films include Larry Clark’s “Kids,” Todd Solondz’s “Happiness,” John Cameron Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Kimberly Peirce’s “Boys Don’t Cry” and Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed.” She’s known for working with young and first-time directors,...

Black Bear has launched international sales on “Wicker,” a twisted romance starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Oscar nominee Dev Patel. Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct from a script they adapted from Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story “The Wicker Husband.”
“Wicker” will start production in 2024. Per the logline, “On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a Fisherwoman (Colman); smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed. One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker (Patel). In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.”
Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce the film with Colman, Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver from South of The River, David Michôd and Brad Zimmerman for Yoki, Inc. and Justin Lothrop and Brent Stiefel for Votiv, who originated and financed development.
Colman received an Oscar for starring in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.

Back in 1992 Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson — who had met the University of Texas in Dallas and were roomies — decided to make a movie. But after spending $10,000 and shooting 13 minutes of the crime caper comedy “Bottle Rocket,” they ran out of money. Eventually, the short and the full script made its way to Oscar-winning writer/director/producer James L. Brooks. It just so happened that Columbia had a deal with Brooks to finance a low-budget film selected by the filmmaker. And in 1996, the feature-length version of “Bottle Rocket” was released with Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson and James Caan. Though the film didn’t set the box office on fire, critics realized Anderson was a new and exciting cinematic voice.

Did you know that there are four brand new short films written and directed by Wes Anderson that are adapted from short stories by Roald Dahl and available for you to watch on Netflix right now? It would not surprise me in the slightest if you didn't. I know short films are not the biggest attention grabbers, but this is one of the best and most recognizable American auteurs taking on the work of one of Britain's most beloved authors of the 20th Century. Surely, you would want the word to get out there about this, especially given how successfully Anderson previously adapted Dahl's work with his stop-motion adaptation of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Alas, Netflix made the plans for these shorts very unclear and definitely did not effectively communicate their release strategy, with one coming out every day for four days. The first short, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,...

The influential director’s latest film, May December, is coming to cinemas soon. Here’s your chance to ask him about this and other provocative work, from Carol to I’m Not There
There’s considerable competition of course, but Todd Haynes has a strong claim to be one of America’s greatest living auteurs, with a string of outstanding films to his name including the Patricia Highsmith adaptation Carol, Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, and Douglas Sirk homage Far From Heaven.
Haynes first made a name for himself with his Barbie-doll animated short film Superstar, about Karen Carpenter, and then acquired career momentum with his feature debut Poison in 1991, part of the early 90s New Queer Cinema movement. Safe, the creepy mid-90s fable about a woman afflicted by a mysterious allergy-like illness, marked his first collaboration with Julianne Moore; she would go on to appear in further films...

Speaking to the press after a screening of May December, Todd Haynes identified himself primarily as an interpreter, both of cinematic forms of the past and of the pre-existing material from which his work is often adapted. That characterization certainly tracks through his filmography, from metacinematic homages to kaleidoscopic renderings of pop idols to his contemporary readings on midcentury fiction.
Loosely based on the ’90s tabloid scandal of Mary Kay Letourneau, who at age 35 served a prison sentence for rape when her sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy was made public, May December is perhaps the slipperiest entry in that interpretive project to date. Written by Samy Burch, the film examines real-world events through the lens of mass media with a wry humor that masks profoundly complex and painful undercurrents of emotion.

Wes Anderson, the acclaimed director of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Fantastic Mr. Fox, has returned to the world of Roald Dahl with a series of four short films based on the British author’s lesser-known stories. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, The Swan, The Rat Catcher and Poison are all now streaming on Netflix, offering a diverse and delightful showcase of Anderson’s signature style and Dahl’s imaginative storytelling.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character, a wealthy and greedy bachelor who discovers a book that teaches him how to develop extraordinary abilities. With his newfound powers, he embarks on a global tour of casinos, cheating his way to fortune. But along the way, he also encounters a moral dilemma that changes his life. The film is narrated by Ralph Fiennes, who also plays multiple roles, including Roald Dahl himself.

For fans of the two masters of their own trades, getting to see the trademark eeriness of Roald Dahl’s symbolism-infused short stories mingle with Wes Anderson’s auteurist approach would be nothing short of a dream come true. Netflix’s acquisition of the rights to the celebrated author’s collection of stories only brought that very dream strikingly close to materializing. The result? Four of Dahl’s obscure stories get to fit into the signature Wes mold and are reshaped to take up the form that complements the director’s vision.
Spoilers Ahead
Harry Pope cries snake in Poison, In the dollhouse-like structure that the director deems a fitting home for something vile, the stakes shift at an odd moment, and the threat shapeshifts to take on a human form. Benedict Cumberbatch, the ferocious racist bound to his bed by an imaginary fear, grows more appalling with every passing second.

Plot: Wes Anderson directs an all-star collection of short films based on the work of Roald Dahl.
Review: What exactly is Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar? When the famed director was first linked with this Netflix adaptation, everyone assumed he would be making a feature, but that’s not what this is. It’s one of four short Roald Dahl shorts Anderson has dropped on Netflix, which, taken together, roughly add up to perhaps a 70-minute (or so) anthology film.
It’s a fun experiment for Anderson and, surprisingly, perhaps his most successful work since The Grand Budapest Hotel. The centrepiece of this loose quadrilogy of shorts is The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar itself, which runs about forty minutes and teams the director with Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Ayode and Dev Patel for the first time (all of whom play dual roles).

By now you should know what you’re going to be getting when you sit down to watch a Wes Anderson film. His highly stylized worlds, full of muted colors, quirky characters, and deadpan dialogue, have become so distinctive and instantly recognizable it sometimes feels like he’s parodying himself.

The pro dancer urges the ‘DWTS’ judges to rewatch their cha-cha after getting the boot during the season 32 premiere.
“Dancing With the Stars” kicked off season 32 on Tuesday night with a number of stellar first performances — and a few performances that seemed to leave the judges a little cold. Unfortunately for comic actor Matt Walsh and his pro partner, Koko Iwasaki, their cha-cha didn’t quite make the grade.
On Wednesday, Iwasaki sat down with Et’s Kevin Frazier, and the talented dancer opened up about her and Walsh’s week 1 elimination, lackluster scores, and why she feels the judges didn’t give the performance a fair appraisal.
“I’m really bummed, you know? Quite disappointed, to be honest,” she said of their ousting. “But at the end of the day, this experience with Matt, we went through so much in the last few weeks, and I wouldn’t have changed it for the world.

See who got sent home and how the leaderboard looks after the first night of competition.
*Caution: Spoilers Ahead
“Dancing With the Stars” returned to ABC on Tuesday for the Season 32 premiere, and 14 new stars teamed up with beloved pro partners to bring their best to the ballroom.
The first week of competition can always be a challenge for the couples to find their footing — but, as usual, some celebs shined bright as standout talents, while others stumbled hard.
After two hours of debut dances, it was up to America to vote on who deserved to perform once more next week, and whose time was already up.
In the end — through a combination of judges scores and audience votes — two couples were determined to be in jeopardy: Mauricio Umansky and Emma Slater, as well as Matt Walsh and Koko Iwasaki.
Mauricio and Emma earned a score of 15 for their jive,...

Wes Anderson, the acclaimed director of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, has returned with his first Netflix project: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a short film based on the 1977 short story by Roald Dahl. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, a wealthy and bored gambler who learns to see through cards after reading a book about a guru who can see without using his eyes. Henry then uses his newfound ability to cheat at casinos and donate his winnings to orphanages around the world.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a charming and whimsical adaptation that captures the essence of Dahl’s original story.
