portrait of a saint

for me, it is one of films who builds walls of reality. a film about price of freedom, faith, sacrifice and love as duty/need. long time ago, I read the biography of Maximilian Kolbe. than, I discover the play by Eugene Ionesco. last step - this movie. so, a circle. or more. because each film, like each book or meeting is a mirror. nothing else. and the image is not always ours.the film of Zanussi is a testimony. a Polish Franciscan. a vocation. a war. and Auschwitz. a fight and a death. as part of two existences. as part of a world. not a lesson but a parable. about force and root of word. about structure of gestures. about expectations.and guilty. nothing else. only a camp and two men. and the choice .

Brave does not come close to describing Saint Maximillian Kolbe

A foreign language movie but bravery is a universal language. One day, Hollywood will come calling to film the life of the bravest man I have ever heard of. A remarkable film for such a small budget.

Well made film on the martyrdom of Saint Maximillian Kolbe

Warning: Spoilers
This is an interesting film. It's not a straight up biography on Maximillian Kolbe. Those who don't know Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan priest murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz. After a prisoner escaped he the Nazi commander condemns ten prisoners to the starvation bunker. One man despairs, so Kolbe steps and offers to take his place. By doing this he saves the man's life, but dies later in the starvation bunker.

This film is seen through the eyes of the man who escapes (played by a young Christoph Waltz). He wants to know Kolbe's story after he realizes that he responsible for his death and the death of the nine others. He suffers intense survivor's guilt because of it.

Yet, this is an interesting way to tell the story. It's definitely worthwhile seeing.
