Alan Ball is responsible for two of the biggest shows to ever hit HBO: “Six Feet Under” and “True Blood.” The producer and writer has a canny knack for creating familial, intimate stories with a twist and it looks like he’ll be doing that with the upcoming “Here And Now.”
Starring the always great Holly Hunter and Tim Robbins, the series follows an ordinary multi-racial family — including a philosophy professor, his lawyer wife, their three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia, and their sole biological child — who are hiding deep secrets beneath a sunny exterior.

It’s amazing to watch kids grow onscreen sometimes as they blossom from the individual they become during their younger years versus the individual they become as an adult. Some kids do just fine with the transition either because they aren’t that exposed early on or because they take a break somewhere in between. Others tend to get burned out on the big or small screens and tend to disappear after their big break. Those that manage to stick around however eventually become well known for their impressive staying power and their ability to adapt to Hollywood’s high-pressured scene. Bella Thorne

Hurricane Irma is pretty much done wreaking havoc, but the worst of it is very bad. And it’s not over. Much of the hurricane season is yet to come and the weather might still have some nasty surprises for us.
And, of course, there’s always next year.

Univision has pulled the curtain on the 2017-18 slate that it will present at the upfronts next week in Manhattan. This morning (I prep my stuff on Tuesday) I flicked on my Facebook feed to see a pair of news stories — real ones — that caused me to sincerely take pause. The first was vapid enough: Internet D-Lister Tila Tequila sieg heils at an Italian eatery. The second one, a bit less oh who cares, denoted that a room full of white nationalists (a.k.a. “The Alt-Right,” a.k.a. fucking Nazi Klansmen) had a conference ending with their leading ideologue declaring that Jews may be “soulless golem” amongst a litany of other unabashed hate-speech. For the first time in the wake of the presidential election, I actually took a breath to be floored — save only for Tuesday the 8th when Donald Trump was declared the winner of the highest office in our nation.
And my only thought that came into focus was… Where’s Superman?

This weekend brought some welcome news: Ben Affleck’s latest, “The Accountant” (Warner Bros.), came in better than expected. And though “Kevin Hart: What Now?” (Universal) grossed only about half as much, they both did well compared to their cost.
But the overall box office continues to lag against 2015’s peak record numbers, dominated by such fourth-quarter entries as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” a Bond film and the final “Hunger Games.” It’s hard to imagine that 2016 totals can beat them, even with Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” in early November, J.K. Rowling’s latest “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from Warners and Disney’s “Moana” closer to Thanksgiving.

“People where you live,” the little prince said, “grow five thousand roses in one garden… yet they don’t find what they’re looking for…
They don’t find it,” I answered.
And yet what they’re looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water…”
Of course,” I answered.
And the little prince added, “But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart.”
The Little Prince has always been a favorite of mine. It was the first book I read in French, and I still prefer to read it in French, despite being a little rusty on the language. It is also particularly appropriate to quote as I think about what happened in Paris last week. Refinery29 has a new way for its audience to consume content. The digital media company founded in 2005 launched a new interactive series dubbed (Un)Cover on September 9, 2015.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, who originally reported on the story, Refinery29’s (Un)Cover initiative stems from the digital media company’s desire to improve its multi-platform storytelling. The series “reimagines the traditional magazine cover feature” and will highlight unique female icons through fashion photography, videos, and interviews across various Refinery29 verticals. The first “edition” of (Un)Cover features actress Anne Hathaway and some of her favorite topics (like crushing on funny lady Amy Schumer and being confident in yourself).
"With (Un)Cover, we're upending the traditional cover story to reinvent how this type of content is experienced in a digital first world," said Refinery29 Editor-In-Chief Christene Barberich. "We are focusing on a strong sense of immediacy and shareability across multiple channels,...

Refinery29 only started getting serious about web video at the beginning of 2015, but since then, the women’s lifestyle brand has managed to carve out a space for itself in a crowded category. A key part of its growth has been partnerships with digital media stars like Jenn Im and Pixiwoo, who have contributed videos to the Refinery29 channel.
Now, through a new initiative, Refinery29 has created a system through which it can foster more partnerships with digital media influencers. It has launched Here and Now, a “talent collective” that will connect content creators to high-quality branded projects.
The description Refinery29 offers on the Here and Now website is filled with buzzwords, but in essence, the new initiative seems to be a studio that will work with YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Vine, and Snapchat stars to create branded content for release on both Refinery29’s network and the channels of participating creators.

Charlie Kaufman's FX pilot Here and Now just got even more ... Charlie Kaufman-y. Yep: They've added Kaufman favorite Catherine Keener and Blue Jasmine's Sally Hawkins to the cast (which already has John Hawkes and Michael Cera!). As previously reported, Hawkes is starring as the former host of a children's science show called How and Why, a man who can explain "how and why a nuclear reactor works, but is clueless on life." It's still unclear whom Keener and Hawkins will be playing, but is it purely wishful thinking to hope that they all crawl back into John Malkovich at this point?...

We’ve been waiting for years. This Saturday, November the 23rd, will be the 50th anniversary of the universe’s favorite time-traveling alien television show, Doctor Who. The Doctor, or should I say the Doctors, face the greatest threat the Time Lord has ever faced: himself and his past.
As we already know things are going to get intense, so the fez-wearing 11th Doctor and his companion, The Impossible Girl, Clara are going to need some help. Hence the return of fan-favorites, the snarky and bouncy 10th Doctor along with the Bad Wolf herself, Rose. And let us not forget the biggest mystery of them all, The War Doctor (his “name” according to The Night of the Doctor mini-episode) played by John Hurt.
Space and time is in the balance as these Doctors (and possibly more?) tackle the story of the Time War, the forgotten John Hurt Doctor, and much more.

Pardon my language but… Fuck me! I’ve been a fan of James Cullen Bressack’s work for some time now, ever since that fateful day he sent me an email asking me if I’d like to review his first full-length feature My Pure Joy. Bressack followed that hard-hitting flick with a segment in the first Theatre of the Deranged anthology and the notorious (and totally amazing), Hate Crime. Now in all honesty I though he couldn’t top Hate Crime. After all that film was, at least for me, a perfect mix of story and style – Bressack’s directorial sensibilities fit perfectly with the content and you could tell that everyone involved wanted to make the best movie they could, even given the touchy subject matter.

Chicago – One of the most remarkable and influential elements of Richard Pryor’s groundbreaking stand-up comedy was how completely bare he laid himself on stage through his art. He held nothing back. He shared not only jokes but personal stories, including the dark stuff. And so when Shout Factory named their massive tribute to the comedian “Life in Concert,” they got something absolutely right. You do get a glimpse into Pryor’s life through these seven CDs and two DVDs, capturing eight of his hit albums, three concert specials, and compilation appearances. “No Pryor Restraint” also includes two hours of previously unreleased stand-up performances and rare recordings. It’s a gift to comedy fans.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Shout Factory really knows how to do these CD/DVD tributes right. They produced an amazing one in “The Incredible Mel Brooks” and this gorgeously packaged (it’s like a hardcover book) set is nearly its match.

I made a double stop to Orbital this week, picking up a number of new titles, a couple of reprint of popular comics from the last few months and dabbled with DC’s ‘Wtf certified’ experiment. I bought two (two!) Marvel comics too, in an effort to branch out of my comfort zone a little.

Hawkeye #1, Matt Fraction, David Aja, Marvel
Matt Fraction’s new Hawkeye title has garnered a lot of attention and praise recently. The first issue is now on its fifth printing and under the recommendation of Mat Barnett I picked it up. The book bills itself as what Clint Barton gets up to ‘when he’s not being an Avenger’, which based on this first issue, is getting hospitalised and dealing with his landlords. This being a gritty-ish take on a crime-fighting hero, ‘dealing with his landlords’ means something slightly different to phoning up...

If you lived in Canada in the late '80s it was hard to avoid the jangle-pop sound of Kelowna, B.C.'s The Grapes Of Wrath. The familiar strains of the Beatlesque "All The Things I Wasn't" and "What Was Going Through My Head" emanated from every dorm room, and dominated alternative and campus radio playlists across the country.
The trio released its fourth record "Here And Now" in 1991. That record, which was recorded at musical Mecca Abbey Road Studios, became the group's second platinum-selling release and spawned the top-ten singles "You May Be Right" and "I Am Here." From the outside, The Grapes Of Wrath seemed to be a band performing at the peak of its powers.
So, it came as a surprise when just a year after the record's release the three founding members — singer/guitarist Kevin Kane and brothers vocalist/bassist Tom and drummer Chris Hooper — pulled the plug.

After a 21-year run, NPR is pulling the plug on Talk of the Nation and aims to replace the call-in radio program with a longer version of the afternoon show Here and Now. The New York Times reports that the decision was the result of two years of talks between NPR and member stations that desired a mid-day newsmagazine show in the same vein as Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Here and Now, which is produced by Boston University's Wbur, will jump from its current distributor, Public Radio International, to NPR's radio waves this summer, debuting on

Get happy-ish, “Zendall” fans — Alicia Minshew is on board for All My Children‘s Hulu/iTunes reboot, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The catch: Sources tell us that Minshew is at this time set for just a one-episode cameo as Kendall, taping this week — though the actress remains in talks to return in a short- or long-term capacity. (Prospect Park, which is producing the relaunched AMC, could not immediately officially confirm Minshew’s encore.)
Minshew’s Pine Valley love interest, Thorsten Kaye (Zach), is among the “new” AMC‘s ensemble of series regulars.

Of the seven All My Children actors to thus far sign on for the sudser’s online relaunch, you’ll see Thorsten Kaye‘s name, meaning Zach Slater is set to return. But what of his lady love Kendall?
“Zendall” fans can hold out hope, yet as of right now, a reunion is not yet a sure thing.
“I’m really excited for the fans to have their shows back!” Alicia Minshew, who in 2002 stepped into the role of Kendall (previously played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), tells TVLine. But will Erica’s eldest daughter be back?

This frontman for Nickelback recently got engaged to pop singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne after a reported six-month courtship that began when the pair teamed up to co-write a song on Lavigne's fifth album. Here are five things you probably don't know about Chad Kroeger.
1. Born Chad Robert Turton on November 15, 1974, in the small coal mining town of Hanna in Alberta, Canada.
Video: Avril Lavigne Says Goodbye
2. Started playing guitar at age 13, and in the early '90s was part of a grunge cover band that also included future Nickelback members Mike Kroeger and Ryan Peake.
3. Placed No. 6 on the Boston Phoenix's list of the "100 Unsexiest Men in the World" -- with the publication citing Kroeger's "massive head, weird face and bad hair."

4. Admits to some behavior problems in school, telling Playboy magazine, "I don't know how many times I got kicked out of school. I just thought it was fun to be bad. To...

Before he started playing bass for Nickelback, Mike Kroeger worked at Starbucks, a gig that supposedly inspired the band’s name. (As in, “Here’s your nickel back.”) Now, the band’s reliving those golden years with the video for “Trying Not To Love You,” which features such dream-of-the-’90s hallmarks as “half-caff mocha-soy” drinks, soul patches, Baywatch nostalgia, and a starring role from Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander, a man who once proclaimed that “coffee’s not coffee, coffee is sex!” He takes that rule a little too seriously in this clip, where he plays a schlubby barista who’s...

Toronto -- Indie-rock songstress Leslie Feist took home a Juno for Artist of the Year on Sunday night, and jazz crooner Michael Buble's holiday-themed "Christmas" claimed the prize for Album of the Year at the 41st annual Canadian music awards ceremony.
Feist, best known for her whimsical 2007 song "1234," which became an international hit after it was featured in an iPod nano commercial, might have surprised some with Sunday night's win since her contemplative fourth disc, "Metals," wasn't nominated for Album of the Year.
Feist's big win brought her Juno tally to three for the weekend, and 11 for her career.
"I just need a second," she marveled as she stepped to the microphone, shaking her head from side to side, looking stunned, as well as stunning in a red, lace dress.
"I'm just in shock. ... I guess all I can really do is try to express some genuine gratitude. I can't believe I'm standing here.

It’s The Walking Dead Season 2 Finale, Episode 13, entitled “Beside The Dying Fire”, not to be confused with the title of one of those Soul CD compilations from a late-night infomercial where every other song is Luther Vandross’ “Here And Now” scrolling by in yellow and you’re like “oops, stayed up til 8 am again!” and you go to work on negative .01 hours of sleep. It’s not that fire. It’s a zombie fire. The episode opens with a visual explanation of how that horde of 8 trillion zombies congregated and got to the farm, starting with walkers eating a horse carcass who abandoned the horse to follow the sound of a helicopter, then followed more and more sounds until finally their swelling numbers heard Carl shoot zombie-Shane and they turned towards the farm. So, the walkers prioritize following noise over eating food that’s right in front of them?...

Nominees of the 41st Annual Juno Awards have been announced in Toronto Canada on Tuesday, February 7. Avril Lavigne and Justin Bieber are among the Canadian artists who receive more than one nod.
The two are up for Juno Fan Choice and Album of the Year. They have to defeat Arcade Fire, Drake, Michael Buble and Nickelback in order to nab the former, and once again have to compete against Drizzy, Buble and Nickelback to win the latter.
Aside from vying for the two awards, Avril also receives a nod in Pop Album of the Year. The girlfriend of Brody Jenner is facing off the likes of Down With Webster, Hedley, Lights and Marianas Trench.
Lavigne took it to Twitter to express her excitement of receiving multiple nominations. "Just woke up in Japan to learn I was nominated for 3 Juno Awards in Canada. Awesome start to the day. Thank you!!! xo Avril" so she wrote.

Unstoppable LP will notch 17th non-consecutive week on top of the albums chart [to avoid repeating Billboard], tying Billy Ray Cyrus' 1992 release.

After blowing past the 1997 "Titanic" soundtrack last week, Adele sold another 95,000 copies of 21 to keep the top spot, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was more than enough to lock out the 21st edition of the Kidz Bop series, which will debut at #2 on sales of 59,000.

British belter's smash album catches up to 1997 blockbuster album with its 16th non-consecutive week atop the Billboard chart.

Adele
Move over, James Cameron (and Celine Dion): Adele just landed her Sweet 16th.
Yes, once again the British belter's 21 album tops the Billboard 200 chart, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, marking the 16th (non-consecutive) week it sits at #1. The mark ties it with the soundtrack to the 1997 blockbuster "Titanic," which was buoyed by Dion's massive "My Heart Will Go On."
Up next for Adele? Well, first, it's Billy Ray Cyrus' Some Gave All, which topped the Billboard charts for 17 weeks in 1992, followed by Garth Brooks' Ropin' the Wind, which was #1 for 18 weeks. Then, it's the 1992 soundtrack to "The Bodyguard," which, powered by Whitney Houston's takes on "I'm Every Woman" and "I Will Always Love You," spent 20 weeks atop the Billboard albums chart. Oh,...

New York — Nickelback has had a number of Top 40 hits over the years, and although today's pop scene is dominated by dance music, the band doesn't plan to shift gears to attain past radio success.
"We don't look at what all the popular artists are doing. We're not chasing Lady Gaga or Katy Perry or any of those guys. They're doing fabulous doing what they're doing, and we're just doing what we do, and that's it," lead singer Chad Kroeger said.
"Obviously, there isn't a person in the world that would say, `You know Nickelback is so trendy.' And we're not. We don't care. We really just don't care."
The Canada-based act – which includes Kroeger's brother, Mike, on bass, guitarist Ryan Peake and drummer Daniel Adair – was named group of the decade by Billboard magazine and their 2001 breakthrough hit "How You Remind Me" was the decade's top rock song.

There's just no catching Michael Bublé on the Billboard 200 as 2011 comes to a close. The smooth crooner will top the charts once again next week thanks to his holiday steamroller, Christmas, moving another 467,000 units. In just over two months, Mb has sold 2.4 million copies, giving him the second best-selling album of the year to date, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
And though he's put up very impressive numbers in a short time, there's no way he can surpass 2011's chart champ, Adele, whose 21 sold another 399,000 copies, giving her more than 5.6 million in sales so far this year. Right behind Adele at #2 was the week's only new top 10 entry, Young Jeezy's long-awaited Tm 103: Hustlerz Ambition.
