A new trailer has been released for the latest take on the classic story of "Romeo & Juliet."
Adapted by "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, "Romeo & Juliet" stars Douglas Booth ("From Time to Time") and Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") as the ill-fated lovers.
The trailer borrows classic Shakespeare lines, beginning, "Never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo." Romeo and Juliet are shown falling in love as Juliet's cousin Tybalt (played by Ed Westwick of "Gossip Girl" fame) warns the young woman against being with a man from the Montague family, the rivals of her own family, the Capulets. Take a look at the clip above.
"Romeo & Juliet" has been adapted for the big screen many times. Notable iterations include Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, and George Cukor's 1936 adaptation starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer.

It seems like it’s been quite a long while since we’ve seen a new version of the Bard’s classic Romeo & Juliet pop up. Perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous play, the last adaptation I can recall was Baz Luhrmann’s outstanding 1996 version with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the star-crossed lovers. However, you may recall that it was set in contemporary times, making 1968 the last time we saw a classically-set, big screen adaptation of the play, with Franco Zeffirelli’s Oscar-winning film.
This makes a classic telling of the tale long-overdue, but luckily the team of director Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent, Fluke) and Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, Downton Abbey) have taken care of that problem for us. This time around the doomed lovers are to be played by Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth) and Oscar nominee (Hailee Steinfeld).

I’m not sure if it’s the kids that love this particular tragic, everyone-dies-at-the-end (spoiler?) love story, or if it’s the adults who think kids love this particular tragic love story. Either way, there’s another decently budgeted Romeo and Juliet coming your way, this one called, well, “Romeo and Juliet”, starring the girl from “True Grit”. The film boasts a script by the guy behind “Downton Abbey” and is directed by Carlo Carrel. This is definitely one movie where you don’t need someone to explain to you what it’s all about, but just in case there are kids out there who have never heard of it (it’s called reading, kids, embrace it), it goes like this: Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare’s epic and searing tale of love, is revitalized on screen by writer Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) and director Carlos Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent...

Romeo and Juliet: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth Starring Lol‘s Douglas Booth and True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld, a new version of Romeo and Juliet is currently being shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival. Partly financed by Austrian design house Swarovski, this latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s love story was written by Academy Award winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and directed by Carlo Carlei. A Best New Director David di Donatello nominee for The Flight of the Innocent (1993), Carlei’s previous English-language foray, the Matthew Modine vehicle Fluke, was a major box-office flop in 1995. In recent years, Carlei has worked on Italian television; his most recent TV movie was a remake of Roberto Rossellini’s Il General della Rovere (2011), starring Pierfrancesco Favino in the old Vittorio De Sica role. According to the Los Angeles Times blog 24 Frames, producer Ileen Maisel wants “every teenager in the world to come see” Romeo and Juliet.

Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick is going to end up joining True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld in another film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. [1] Hailee Steinfeld may have lost Katniss Everdeen to Jennifer Lawrence, but she'll be portraying an even more famous teenager soon. The young True Grit star is reportedly in talks to join Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet as Juliet. For those who've somehow managed to get this far in life without knowing about Romeo and Juliet, the classic William Shakespeare play centers around a pair of teenagers from rival families who meet and fall in love, with tragic results. Kind of like Romeo Must Die, only with more emphasis on the romance angle and less on the martial arts stuff. Carlei's earlier features include 1993's The Flight of the Innocent and 1995's Fluke. The script is being written by Julian Fellowes, whose past work includes Gosford Park, last year's The Tourist, and the critically acclaimed Brit series Downton Abbey. The $15 million picture is scheduled to begin shooting in Italy later this spring,...

Hailee Steinfeld, the recent Oscar nominee for the Coen brothers‘ True Grit, is in talks to star in an upcoming adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet. Carlo Carlie (The Flight of the Innocent, Fluke) will direct and Julian Fellowes, who won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Gosford Park, will pen the script. Serving as producers are Gabriele Muccino, who directed Seven Pounds, Ileen Maisel, and Mark Ordesky. [The Hollywood Reporter]
With a reported $15 million budget, the project is scheduled to begin shooting in Italy later this spring. One of the intriguing things about this adaptation, aside from providing Steinfeld, 14, a chance to flex different elements of her repertoire, is the fact the filmmakers are remaining loyal to the character’s age in Shakespeare‘s play. Other adaptations of the classic, including Baz Luhrmann‘s 1996 film, resorted to casting older actresses.
We’ll certainly keep our eyes peeled for further casting information.

A year ago it was reported Lily Collins would play the female lead in Romeo and Juliet for Italian director Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent), but a year later Collins is now set to play Snow White in Tarsem Singh's The Brothers Grimm: Snow White opening the door for another actress to step in. Hailee Steinfeld is potentially planning to play the lead in an indie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . One of the most adapted tales of all time, this version is being helmed by Carlo Carlei ( Fluke , The Flight of the Innocent ) and will feature a script from Julian Fellowes ( Gosford Park , The Tourist ). Steinfeld, who met with critical acclaim for her performance in last year's True Grit , would play the part of Juliet. In the play, the character is described as "almost fourteen," though film adaptations often cast older actresses in the part. If, as is planned, the film shoots this summer, Steinfeld will be fourteen for the duration of the production. Formerly said to be attached to the project was actress Lily...

According to reports, actress Lily Collins ("The Blind Side") will star in a $12 million, live-action "Romeo and Juliet" feature, scheduled to start on location in Italy, October 4, from a screenplay by writer Julian Fellowes ("Gosford Park").
Director Gabriele Muccino ("Seven Pounds") will produce with Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky from Amber Entertainment. Carlo Carlei ("The Flight of the Innocent" will direct the 'teen romance' feature, set in the period time frame of author William Shakespeare’s original play.
Regarded as archetypal 'star-cross'd lovers', the "Romeo and Juliet' characters, whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families, was first published in 1597.
In the classic, Shakespeare switches between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, expands minor characters and uses sub-plots to embellish his romantic story.
