Hayao Miyazaki stands as a luminary in the anime and animation realm, wielding multiple roles – director, producer, scriptwriter, animator, author, manga artist, and Studio Ghibli's co-owner. Reshaping the landscape, he was one of the pioneers of elevating anime beyond teenage audiences. His magnum opus, “Spirited Away,” broke records and became the first anime to win an Oscar. In 2014, he earned an Honorary Academy Award, a testament to his cinematic impact. A prolific storyteller since 1972, Miyazaki, continues to come up with titles that top the category, although his latest one, “The Boy and the Heron” could possibly be his last.
11 writers of Asian Movie Pulse who have watched at least 8 of his feature films voted for this list, in which we present his 12 films in order of quality.

Joe Hisaishi's soundtracks for Studio Ghibli films are iconic and perfectly complement Miyazaki's storytelling and animation. Hisaishi's scores have a unique charm and can stand alone, but they shine even brighter when linked together in a film. Each film has standout pieces, such as "Bygone Days," "One Summer's Day," and "A Journey," that capture the essence and themes of their respective movies.
The best Studio Ghibli soundtracks by Joe Hisaishi serve as iconic undertones of Miyazaki Hayao’s cinematic masterpieces. Although Studio Ghibli is not single-handedly run by Miyazaki, the films he has created are the face of the studio, and along his entire journey, Joe Hisaishi has been there by his side writing scores that perfectly complement Miyazaki’s beautiful storytelling and animation.

"Luca" is a Pixar movie set in a fictional location inspired by real small towns in Italy, adding to the magic of the film. Director Enrico Casarosa's personal childhood memories influenced the plot, setting, and themes of "Luca". The name Portorosso in the movie may be a nod to Studio Ghibli's film "Porco Rosso", and the aesthetics of the film were influenced by Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki's work.

The short film Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo holds a lot of significance for Studio Ghibli. As well as being the studio's first live-action project, the short sets up Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Compared to the rest of Studio Ghibli's output which is usually more light-hearted, Giant God Warrior takes on a darker direction with its apocalyptic tale. The short film is packed with rich ideas, allowing for an interesting exploration of environmental themes.

Whether referring to an A.I.-driven animation demo as “an insult to life itself,” walking out of a movie directed by his own son (“It feels like I was sitting there for about three hours”), or insisting to anyone who will listen that “filmmaking only brings suffering,” legendary director and living meme factory Hayao Miyazaki has long provided the likes of David Cronenberg and Ridley Scott with serious competition as modern cinema’s most reliable crank. And yet, in spite of Miyazaki’s curmudgeonly demeanor and his work’s consistent emphasis on the toxic effects of human civilization in a world cursed by our very existence, there may not be any other auteur whose movies have brought more joy to more people over the last 45 years, or are so widely beloved by children.

Porco Rosso is an often overlooked Studio Ghibli film that showcases Hayao Miyazaki's signature style and themes of flight, pigs, war, and redemption. The film is a joyous genre throwback, featuring a classic adventure with a dash of romance and old-fashioned optimism. Porco Rosso's exploration of survivor's guilt and redemption make it a funny, smart, and rewatchable movie, deserving of classic status alongside Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service.
One of the greatest animators of all time is back. Studio Ponoc's upcoming anime film, The Imaginary, will debut in Japan on Dec. 15.
As detailed on Anime News Network, Ponoc recently unveiled the film's official release date along with a new promotional poster. While The Imaginary was originally scheduled to premiere last summer, Ponoc was forced to delay the film due to "new challenges" related to both the production and the Covid-19 pandemic, the latter of which caused delays for many other anticipated releases, including Doga Kobo's Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie TV series. In Japan, the film will be released under the title, Rudger in the Attic.

Released in 1992, Porco Rosso quietly feels like the purest example of a Hayao Miyazaki film. The legendary Japanese animator, director and writer's adaptation of his earlier manga Hikōtei Jidai is whimsical, somber, colorful, funny, and occasionally an effective tearjerker. Released to critical and commercial success, Porco Rosso nevertheless tends to fall under the shadow of Miyazaki's other (likewise amazing) films with Studio Ghibli.
This is a real shame since it might genuinely be one of his best works. Beautifully animated with a story that gives its world weight while not taking time away from the characters, Porco Rosso is a showcase of all the best aspects of Miyazaki's illustrious career. Over 30 years on, it remains one of the director's most underrated films -- and deserves another shot at the spotlight.

The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival is screening its first Japanese anime film in competition in over two decades. The previous occasion was the international premiere of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away in 2002, so it’s perhaps fitting that the latest selection is Suzume, the newest release from Makoto Shinkai, the director most often hailed as Miyaki’s heir as Japan’s next historic anime talent.
Like his past two anime blockbusters Your Name (which earned 357 million worldwide in 2017) and Weathering With You (193 million, 2020), Suzume tells a YA story of fantasy, adventure and romance, involving characters coping with a sense of loss and cataclysmic disaster. The new film follows a high-school girl named Suzume who meets a mysterious young man named Sōta and becomes involved in his mission to track down and close a sequence of mysterious metaphysical doors that are opening in abandoned areas of Japan and threatening the entire country with disaster.

Pixar's Luca is set in a colorful seaside town in 20th century Italy, but the movie is an example of the many Studio Ghibli Pixar connections. Studio Ghibli is best known for the work of directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata on films like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Grave of the Fireflies. Luca uses Pixar's signature three-dimensional CGI animation instead of Ghibli's more traditional style and hand-drawn look, but Studio Ghibli clearly inspired Disney through Luca's setting, visuals, and treatment of female characters.
Luca follows a young sea monster who longs to walk on the surface, where he can transform into a human boy. After emerging onto land, he befriends fellow sea monster Alberto and the pair venture to the town Portorosso, where they must keep their identities secret as the Portorosso's townspeople hate sea monsters like them. Streaming giant Netflix has licensed rights to “Earwig and the Witch,” the most recent animated feature from Japan’s Studio Ghibli. The deal excludes the U.S. and Japan.
The film was directed by Miyazaki Goro, son of the iconic Miyazaki Hayao who has created other iconic films “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Porco Rosso” through Studio Ghibli.
The new film tells the story of a headstrong young girl who grew up in an orphanage. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in and she is forced to live with a selfish witch.
With a screenplay by Niwa Keiko and Gunji Emi, the story of Earwig is based on a novel of the same name by English writer Diana Wynne Jones.

“Minor Pixar” — a bit of a loaded phrase, right? The company that’s been responsible for giving animated movies several shoves up the evolutionary scale, and setting the bar for formal heights and emotional depth in ‘toon storytelling over the last quarter century, has created its share of masterpieces. (Pixar has also put out the Cars movies, a reminder that nobody is perfect and the concept of a just, merciful God is a myth.) In the spirit of something like a public service announcement, we’ll state upfront that Luca,...

Would you like to be swept up into a fantastical world with equal parts surreal imagery and emotional realism? Than you might be a fan of Studio Ghibli, the influential anime studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. Ghibli has given us classic animated works like Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and my personal favorite, Porco Rosso (a pig flies a plane! Hell yeah!). And now, sensing we all needed a touch of "positive energy for no reason" in the year of our Lord 2020, Studio Ghibli has up and released 400 images from eight …...

Oscar-winning animation giant Hayao Miyazaki is at the center of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ inaugural temporary exhibition when it opens to public (hopefully) in the spring. Previously announced for the honor, the Academy is now providing details of one of the key highlights initial visitors will experience when the long-delayed museum finally opens its doors.
With the museum’s opening most recently delayed from December 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the gala unveiling is now set for public consumption April 30 with a big promotional boost on the also-delayed Academy Awards scheduled to take place on April 25.
Japanese icon Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 and the production house has collaborated with Academy Museum exhibitions curator Jessica Niebel and assistant curator J. Raul Guzman to pull it all together in the museum’s Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery, marking the first North American retrospective ever dedicated to Miyazaki and his prolific body of world-acclaimed work.

When the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has its long-awaited grand opening on April 30, 2021, it will do so with the first North American museum retrospective dedicated to the legendary career of Hayao Miyazaki. The renowned Japanese animator and Studio Ghibli co-founder is the subject of the Academy Museum’s first exhibit, the initial details of which have been provided today by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Miyazaki exhibition is curated by the museum’s Jessica Niebel and J. Raúl Guzmán in collaboration with Studio Ghibli and features over 300 objects from the director’s career, from hand-drawn storyboards and character designs to posters and film clips. Many of the objects featured in the exhibit have never been seen outside of Japan.
“It is an immense honor that ‘Hayao Miyazaki’ is the inaugural temporary exhibition at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures,” said Ghibli co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki in a statement.

At last, the soundtrack to a Studio Ghibli classic is getting its due for at-home listening. The score for “Princess Mononoke,” Hayao Miyazaki’s 1997 animated fantasy masterpiece, will get its first-ever vinyl release this summer from Norman Records. On July 24, Joe Hisaishi’s alternately epic and intimate classical-inspired score will roll out in three editions.
One release includes the original score as conducted by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, including main theme vocals by Yoshikazu Mera. A second edition will boast the “Symphonic Suite,” recorded a year after Miyazaki’s film originally came out, and newly performed with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Finally, there will also be the “Image Album,” made before the final soundtrack, which features many of Miyazaki’s notes and ideas for what the score could be.

The first of Hayao Miyazaki’s aviation-themed films, it remains unclear why its pilot character is a pig. Set against the rising Italian fascist regime, this chirpy animation has an oddly noticeable gangster-film influence. After absconding from the Raf, Porco Rosso transforms back into a human, literally and metaphorically.

Disney artist and theme park designer, John Ramirez, has created a series of concept art showing his vision of what a studio Ghibli theme park would look like along with the rides that it would entail. He's spent years developing this art and this is a theme park that I would love to see brought to life! It looks like it would be absolutely wonderful!
He has created designs for attractions inspired by Totoro, Laputa, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso and Spirited Away. Unfortunately, none of these are official. This isn't a theme park that's going to be built, but it totally should!
I'm such a huge fan of these films and a theme park built around these worlds that Studio Ghibli has created over the years would be amazing!

The gallery opens on November 30th, both online and at the gallery. You'll be able to see the collection of art here. You can see some samples of what will be on display below. Each poster features an artist's interpretation of what a sequel to a particular film could be.
Some of the films included in the art below include Close Encounters of the Third Kind 2, Speed Racer 2, E.T.: The Return, The Power of the Dark Crystal, Being Jeff Goldblum, Who Shot Roger Rabbit, Son of Scissorhands, Furiosa, and Egg Shen and the 6 Demon Bag.

Pixar is pretty much on the top of most people's list when it comes to animation studios, but for a great many others, Studio Ghibli is as good as it gets. The Japanese animation house was started by anime legend Hayao Miyazaki more than 30 years ago, who made some of the greatest animated movies of all time during his run with Studio Ghibli. Now, just three years after announcing his retirement from feature filmmaking, the legend is returning to direct at least one more movie.
Anime News Network is reporting that Hayao Miyazaki is indeed going to come out of retirement to direct a feature, Boro the Caterpillar. This is a movie that has been in development for nearly 20 years and is described simply as the "story of a tiny, hairy caterpillar. So tiny that it may be easily squished between your fingers." It should be noted that Hayao Miyazaki...

In 1986, Hayao Miyazaki released one of his very best films. We look back at the lasting power and influence of Laputa: Castle In The Sky.
How does humanity quench its thirst for progress while at the same time protecting the environment? Can technology and nature exist side by side, or will our destructive tendencies always get in the way? Those are questions that underscore many of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, from the lighter-than-air eco fable Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind to his final animated feature, The Wind Rises.
In Miyazaki’s work, there’s a constant tension at play between nature and machines, between the tranquility of rural Japan and the industrial revolution of its post war era. The son of an aeronautical engineer, Miyazaki grew up as Japan rebuilt itself in the middle of the 20th century; he was born into a generation with...

Level-5's still working on its Jrpg sequel Ni No Kuni 2. Here's a first look at its gameplay in action...
Released in 2010, Ni No Kuni was one of the best RPGs of its generation, thanks in no small part to its spectacular production values. With music by Joe Hisaishi and animated sequences by Studio Ghibli, its fantasy world felt cosy and welcoming, even as the action-roleplaying itself proved unexpectedly taxing.

Ni No Kuni's scheduled to return this year, with its sequel subtitled Revenant Kingdom. There have been a few changes in the intervening years, though: Oliver and his friend Mr Drippy are gone, replaced by an older hero named Evan. Those cute familiars are also out of the picture - perhaps because Level 5's hit Yokai Watch...
