I'll admit that sometimes one of the fundamental problems with most anime or even heroic stories are there are not enough heroes that use only wits, thinking, and no weapons. About 90% of hero/superheros consist of people having to solve problems with violence not that there is a problem with that but another option is never considered or put to practice enough.
This series was popular but as time went on it has for some reason became a forgotten anime gem and is one of the only anime sci-fi opera comedies I really like.
This show works in four ways: One, from animation which is actually really good the detail on the Rangoon and Earth ships is excellent even the human and humanoid Rangoon aliens are drawn well.
Two, it's not a parody even though it's set up that way, some of the format makes me recall the anime "Space Battleship Yamato". It's just that a sci-fi adventure comedy because of how it handles itself, it doesn't make fun of itself at all it plays it straight without knowing it's not being entirely series and that is most of the time what makes good comedy and done in good taste.
Three, characters and character relationships: It's mainly these four that stick out and form sort of a semi-love triangle in the show.
Tylor: His character in a way is the most memorable because he's the most enigmatic we never really know what his true motives are or if he has any at all. Is he really a irresponsible naive fool with dumb luck or a genius. Personally I'm thinking genius because he's got that focused and unfocused mindset as well as just a bit of eccentricity. But what really makes him funny is just his constant naive behavior and how he reacts to certain things it reminds me of the behavior some of those silent comedians like Buster Keeton and Charile Chaplin whom always acted odd because their out of place in their enviorment. But most of all has humanity and a heart which actually make us care for him. His humanity from the comedic surface does show from the fact he doesn't believe in violence and utilizes non violent methods you can say similar to Macgyver. Even though this show is part space opera he doesn't fire one laser gun, drive one mecha or space fighter, fire one cannon on the ship, or even throw one punch. Instead he uses his bright personality and reason to win which I think is a good message.
Harumi: Basically a beautiful Rallgon spy at first where her mission is to sabotage the earth forces methods and kill Tylor. But of course after a failed assassination toward him somehow he's wins her heart over and she gets to know him and falls in love with him. Same goes for.
Arzahyn: The Raalgon princess who is interested in Tylor to have him as friend and mate, heck she even gave Tylor a pet name Poco Poco, cracks me up whenever she refers to him as that may'be a bit more than she should. She's really funny due to her childlike and even more naive sensibility as Tylor.
Yuriko: She is more the straight person of the bunch. She is a person that doesn't like Tylor much. She knows unlike everyone else this guy might not be capable of commanding and we know she seem to be most qualified. However due to Tylor genus or luck that has pulled them though it puts a few more quarters in her loyalty matter and even she wherever she want to admit or not starts to deeply care for him. What can I say Tylor has as much magnetism to woman as Barney in the TV show "How I Meet Your Mother".
Three there are some well done great episodes: Like one random episode where Harumi is making assassination attempts at Tylor but all fail hilariously but it ends nicely with Tylor disarming the situation and a swimsuit contest I'll say Harumi look hot in a swimsuit. Ahem, but most of all the Rangoon plot arc which ran from episodes 14-23 which is great and one of the most memorable anime/TV show arcs I've seen due to it's moment most notably seeing both Tylor and Azahyn interact which is comic gold, or an intensive final space battle with a surprising result.
However this anime gem isn't entirely perfect there are some things that held it back for me from total perfection. One, just the simple fact that the Raalgon plot line didn't start till a lot latter like I said episode 14. I just felt it should of started earlier, more just could of been done and explored but the fault of this was on unsoild story direction. Second, the show lost it's momentum on the last three episodes not that their bad but could of been better. But my biggest complaint would have to be it has that same fundamental problem "Tenchi Muyo" had, Tylors romantic relations with the women have no resolution. We don't entirely know who get who(some said it was Yuriko whom I'll admit was the right match for him) or even how deep he got with the women. It violated a cardinal rule "when you build up to something always pay off" this show never quite did that. Last thing that was too bad was there wasn't another season of this show, yeah I know there was that OVA mini anthology series which was okay but that doesn't really count, which was too bad I thought more could of been done but oh well.
Still all the same I recommend this forgotten gem which is worth looking toward. Captain Tylor a genius or dumb luck fool all the same his sight is crystal clear.
