Rod Holcomb, an Emmy-winning ER director who also helmed Battlestar Galactica, The Six Million Dollar Man, China Beach and dozens of other shows and was a longtime Directors Guild negotiating committee menber, has died. He was 80.
The DGA said Holcomb died Wednesday in Los Angeles after a long illness.
“The DGA deeply mourns the passing of Rod Holcomb — a visionary director whose impact on television direction and the creative rights of television directors cannot be overstated,” DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter said in a statement. “Rod’s influence as a pilot director on shows like China Beach and ER among many others, resonated deeply with directors and audiences alike, leaving a cultural imprint. His pioneering use of Steadicam and other techniques brought a more cinematic style to television, helping establish a visual aesthetic that continues today.”

If it’s possible for a show to be remarkably unremarkable, Netflix’s Frontier, a co-production with Discovery Channel Canada, makes an exceptional case. Grizzled and merciless, yet also drab and un-involving, this 18th Century-based period drama is dark, brooding and quite violent. No doubt of that. But there’s little that makes it unique or intriguing, especially in its muddled execution. Cold, monotonous, dimly lit and fairly shallow in its approach, it’s almost as if the freshman series tries to be as dull as possible. In this age of modern television, especially during its peak era, it’s a starkly mediocre piece of work.
In 1670, King Charles II grants England’s Hudson’s Bay Company land they can’t rightfully claim. Occupied by “aboriginal peoples for thousands of years,” as the opening credits put so elegantly, they once held a dominant fur trading monopoly,...

I have a confession to make: There’s a piece of myself, my history, that I’ve been hiding for years. Ever fearful that I will be “caught,” “found out,” and subsequently rejected. Of all things, what looks to be this summer’s biggest film, Finding Dory, has inspired me to unearth what’s become – but never should have been – my secret shame and bring it out into the open. I’m dyslexic. More than that, I’m dyslexic and make my living – at least in part – as a writer. A number of years ago I worked at an advertising company. We were discussing a potential hire when my then boss said that the gentlemen had revealed that he was dyslexic in the interview. For that reason alone, his application was dismissed. (If you’re screaming “that’s illegal!” welcome to advertising. That was the brass operating at the height of their integrity.

We can only imagine how challenging it was to live in New England nearly four centuries ago. On the positive side, opportunities were wide open for families willing to work hard in beautiful surroundings. On the scary side, that very same natural environment could harbor unknown terrors. In The Witch, writer/director Robert Eggers sets up the challenging circumstances for a newly arrived family. Under threat of banishment, a husband moves with his wife and five children to a rural plot of land to make a new life for themselves in New England. Almost at once, however, strange things begin to happen, things that are difficult to explain, things that cause family members to look upon each other with suspicion. A new trailer for the movie gives a peek into a rural world of growing...

Fractured Frontier: Ross Bros. Witness Bordertowns Running Afoul Under Threat of Storm Clouds & Cartels
The brothers Ross, Bill and Turner, have been rightly hailed as the new forerunners in the documentation of true blue Americana, picking up where their late idol Les Blank left off with poetic insta-vérité classics like 45365 and Tchoupitoulas. But it should be noted that since their humble beginnings the Ross brothers, though fascinated with the same kind southern small town culture that lines Blank’s oeuvre, have swapped out a Blank staple in culinary celebration for a shadowy focal point the allows the darker recesses of their subjects to seep into the frame.
Case in point: Tchoupitoulas revolves solely on a nighttime excursion into the illusory annals of New Orleans, while their deceptively rich web series River sees the filmmakers themselves travelling down the Mississippi from Cincinnati to New Orleans by ramshackle pontoon, stopping by night...

USA's Jerusalem-set miniseries “Dig” is weighing whether it can continue filming in Israel given the violence there. Such is the power of David O. Eric is just about to murder the governor’s daughter, out of a mixture of hunger and vengeance, when she offers to tell him about her father’s experiments. Wes Craven's Scream 4 had an early test screening in Pittsburgh on January 6th 2011, and the first impressions have begun to appear online. Hit the jump to find out what people think. I've removed all possible spoilers, so feel free to check it out. Disclaimer: Test screenings happen for a reason. The film has not completed post production and the filmmaker/studio want to see what works and what doesn't. Films can change drastically from a test screening cut, or might not change at all. The bottom line is that you can't take the opinions from a test screening as a true review of the final feature film. But I think it gives you a nice indication of what general audiences might think. This "work-in-progress" screening was said to be missing a few effects shots, and was somewhere between an hour and forty five minutes and two hours long.

Alien Autopsy tells the true story of Ray Santilli and Gary Shoefield, two British lads who came into possession of proof of the most startling discovery in human history. We are not alone. Or are we? This is a question that cave dwellers and today's scientists using the most bleeding edge technology have been trying to answer.
Written by William Davies and directed by Jonny Campbell, this film doesn't try to answer that question. Instead, it is a light-hearted comedy about how Ray and Gary came upon the film which supposedly contained images of an actual Alien Autopsy and who eventually became famous for perpetrating one of the largest, world-spanning and profitable hoaxes ever.
In 1995 Ray and Gary unleashed their video on the world having sold the rights to over 30 countries worldwide.

Madonna's ex-husband Guy Ritchie faces losing the liquor licence on his beloved London pub following a string of complaints from local residents.
Ritchie purchased The Punch Bowl in Mayfair during his marriage to the pop superstar and was allowed to keep the drinking establishment in their divorce settlement.
But the venue is facing possible closure after officials at the local council were inundated by letters from disgruntled residents complaining about noise levels coming from the pub at night.
A source tells London newspaper the Evening Standard: "The neighbours are fed up with the racket (noise), which sometimes goes on into the early hours."
Authorities at Westminster Council confirmed they have received 37 complaints about The Punch Bowl and have taken action by placing a microphone in a nearby building to monitor noise levels from the pub over the next few weeks.
A spokesperson for the council says, "Managers at the pub are aware of this activity and it will take two weeks to complete."
The film director, 40, risks losing his licence if council officials decide there is too much noise.

Anthony MacKie has ruled out making another lifelike war movie after constantly fearing for his life - for real - while filming The Hurt Locker in Jordan.
The actor, who portrayed Tupac Shakur in Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious, admits he didn't have a great experience on the set of the gritty new film, in which he plays an army bomb squad expert.
But sandstorms and poor conditions were the least of his worries - there was a constant threat that he and his castmates could be killed.
He explains, "My life was hell. There were points where it got really hairy. The exhaustion and fear you see in the film was because of our surroundings.
"We were in the Middle East running around with American military suits with big guns in Jordan which kept the fear very real.
"Sometimes people didn't react the way we would've liked them to react but they did react the way we expected them to react. There were people up on their rooftops watching us film, who were not actors. When we were in the desert there were Bedouins 400 yards at the top of a cliff watching us.
"If you're on a set when they yell 'cut' you go into your trailer with the AC (air conditioning) on and drink your Starbucks. You have a tent covering you to protect you from the sun or a fan cooling you off and probably ice packs in your shirt. But we were laying in the real desert, not pseudo desert, in 120 degree heat with 20 pounds of Kevlar (bullet proof vests) on with a Barret sniper rifle.
"There was nothing forgiving about that situation and we did that for eight days. If you've never been in a sandstorm it's like sand paper brushing against your face. It was rough but I'm glad I did it. It's something I can tell my kids about and I'll never do it again."...
