Max will continue to be the studio’s exclusive streaming home in the United States with tiles including “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Spirited Away,” and more.
Thanks in no small part to the prevalence of streaming media, anime has become an increasingly important part of the American entertainment landscape in recent years. When Warner Bros. Discovery launched the HBO Max streaming service in 2020, the iconic films of Studio Ghibili were included in the catalog. On Tuesday, Wbd announced that it had extended its deal with the Japanese studio and that the recent Oscar-winning film “The Boy and the Heron” will stream on HBO Max’s successive streaming service Max.

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” which just won the Oscar for feature animated film, is streaming to Max in the U.S.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced a multiyear agreement with independent distributor GKids to extend Max’s exclusive U.S. streaming rights for films from Studio Ghibli, Japan’s legendary animation house. The streamer has been the U.S. home to Studio Ghibli’s catalog since 2020, when the service originally launched as HBO Max.
Under the deal renewal, Max will be the future home of “The Boy and the Heron”; the streaming premiere date on Max will be announced later this year. The hand-drawn, semi-autobiographical film — Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years — was produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki and features a musical score from Miyazaki’s longtime collaborator Joe Hisaishi.

“The Boy and the Heron” marks the 14th collaboration between Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi. But even after almost four decades of working together, the animator and the composer are finding new ways to create new sounds. “The Boy and The Heron” is the story of Mahito (Soma Santoki), a young man who leaves the firebombing of Tokyo for the Japanese countryside in World War II, and then ends up guided by the titular Heron (Masaki Suda) to a completely different place in order to rescue his stepmother Natsuko (Yoshino Kimura) from the clutches of otherworldly forces. And also a lot of birds.
But parakeets hungry for human flesh aren’t the only novel thing about “The Boy and The Heron.” Hisaishi has in the past described his Studio Ghibli scores as a two years on, two years off cycle. When releasing the “Symphonic Celebration” Ghibli collection with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,...

The mysterious final film from critically-acclaimed Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki is set to hit American theaters later this year — but when will you be able to stream it?
It was announced that Studio Ghibli’s longtime North American distribution partner Gkids would once again distribute a film. This time, it will be Miyazaki’s final film, which will receive the English title “The Boy and The Heron.” Little is known about the film, as no images, trailers, synopses, advertisements, or other information about the film were made available to the public prior to its release in theaters in Japan. The film was just released in Japanese theaters over the weekend, so leaks and details may start to appear online in preparation for the film’s launch in North America. However, Gkids will not release any further details or marketing materials for North American audiences, either — including, as of yet,...

Studio Ghibli’s “Ocean Waves” seems like the ugly duckling in the studio’s fantastical oeuvre. It misses all the Ghibli trademarks. Instead of Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, the film was directed by the much younger Tomomi Mochizuki. Instead of the studio’s usual 18-frames-per-second, “Ocean Waves” maximizes upon 12. Instead of theatrical release, “Ocean Waves” only planned to air on TV — and ended up being Ghibli’s first, and last, foray into TV-film.
Make no mistake though: “Ocean Waves” is a must-see hidden gem of Asian animation. Here, independent student council member Yutaka Matsuno (Yoshihiko Seki) and kind-hearted, but clueless Taku Morisaki (Nobuo Tobita) have been friends since middle school. However, when the fiery, Tokyo-born Rikako Muto (Yoko Sakamoto) descends upon the sleepy town of Kochi, her presence strains the boys’ friendship. While Yutaka showers Rikako with movies and books, Taku receives all of...

Studio Ghibli is the most important animation production company in movie history, and I say this with absolutely no hyperbole. The home of living animation legend Hayao Miyazaki and the studio responsible for some of the most brilliant works of animated cinema ever put to screen, Studio Ghibli has consistently broken new ground and completely redefined what stories are possible to tell in animation since its inception in the 1980s. Founded by Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli films have become internationally beloved classics, and have even inspired an upcoming theme park set to open in Japan later this year.

Hayao Miyazaki — easily the most recognizable face behind Studio Ghibli — has long said that he would retire. Since then, all eyes have turned to his first son and heir, Goro Miyazaki. Goro Miyazaki seems to chafe under his father’s strictly traditional ways; his most recent release, “Earwig and the Witch” (2020) made a splash along Cannes headlines for being the first CGI film produced by the mostly paper-and-paint-based studio. In turn, his earlier work “From up on Poppy Hill” feels like an externalization of Goro’s internal struggle. Modernity and tradition collide again in this postwar port city, where a single executive move might tear down a historic building. It takes the entirety of a school to salvage what might otherwise be erased forever.
As per every other Ghibli film, “From Up on Poppy Hill” follows a young female protagonist. In 1963 Yokohama, Umi Matsuzaki (Masami Nagasawa) is...

Studio Ghibli have been in a bit of a lull since the announcement of flag-bearing director Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement back in 2014. That sad news, however, did reveal a silver lining in 2017 when it was announced that the legendary director would come out of retirement to make a new film. Not much has since been heard regarding the prolific animation studio since, but the initial couple months of 2020 have been brimming with news about them and their future. Here, we break down everything that’s been announced regarding Studio Ghibli so far this year.
First up, the news of Studio Ghibli’s catalogue coming to Netflix across the world filled fans all round with joy. Several of the Studio’s films are often considered among the best of not just animation but cinema in general, and fans had been waiting with bated breath for them to hit the world’s biggest streaming platform.

Why buy it? The identity of finding the truth about his father is a catalyst of sorts here, but it’s far from the focus of Mario Cornejo and co-writer Monster Jimenez’s beautiful, raw, and affecting film. Instead it’s the idea of escaping one’s past through self-deception and distraction that pervades the screen alongside gorgeous visuals and performances. Donnie Darko (Richard Kelly)
Last year marked the 15-year anniversary of Richard Kelly’s debut cult curio, Donnie Darko. While the film’s cult-status has elevated it into its own separate canon alongside other 21st-century indie-cult hits, Kelly’s two other films — the positively delirious and daring Southland Tales and the labyrinthine sci-fi period piece The Box — prove that he is a director deserving of much greater consideration. Sadly it’s been about eight years since a new...

Movies on Demand continues to add a wide variety of audience favorites, even as the 2016 awards season is firmly in the rear view. Check out four of our favorite films from the upcoming month below, as well as the full list of great movies available throughout April.
1) “Paterson” (Available April 4)
Making a film about a poet is difficult, but Jim Jarmusch’s modest portrait of a modest Jersey bus driver finds something profound in simplicity. The week-in-the-life approach that Jarmusch takes with his script gives Adam Driver a career-expanding performance filled with warmth and empathy. Toss in one of the most adorable dogs in all of cinema and you have a film from a director returning to form.
2) “Lion” (Available April 11)
Based on Saroo Brierley’s real-life, Google-Earth-aided quest to find his birth family, Garth Davis’ film spans countries with a grace and respect that similar adoption stories rarely have.

For all the awful and rot the final act of 2016 has brought us, one small glimmer of cinematic hope was revealed last month with the news that Hayao Miyazaki was coming out of retirement and working on another film for Studio Ghibli. Now, following not far behind, we have the theatrical rerelease of a long overlooked effort from the studio (and the first not directed by Isao Takahata or Miyazaki), the 1993 TV movie “Ocean Waves.” And while “Ocean Waves” never really comes close to reaching the glorious highs that the studio is known for (“Spirited Away,” “Castle In The Sky,” etc.), it is nonetheless a gorgeously realized and deep emotional film of quiet elegance and the fierce longing of youth, and certainly one worth catching again at your local arthouse.

In 1993, a Filipino prospector named Michael de Guzman emerged from the jungles of Busang, Indonesia claiming to have found one of the largest gold deposits on record — he partnered with a Canadian conglomerate called Bre-x Minerals Ltd., and eventually took the fall for the most famous gold mining scandal of the late 20th century.
In 2011, screenwriters Patrick Massett and John Zinman (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) decided to take the Bre-x story, arbitrarily transplant it to the late 1980s, and re-conceive it as a trite rise and fall parable about the seduction of the American Dream — the result, ultimately directed without distinction by Stephen Gaghan (“Syriana”), unfolds like a chintzy ripoff of David O. Russell ripping off Martin Scorsese ripping off real life, a movie that tries to sell us the most boring version of a story that has already been panned for all of its treasure and then some.

The most modest and least celebrated of the films produced by Japan’s peerless Studio Ghibli, “Ocean Waves” was conceived as an opportunity for the company’s younger talent to make something on the cheap. In spite of those simple aspirations, the project came in late and over budget, eventually airing on local television in 1993 and failing to make much of a splash. Since then, the sentimental high school drama has existed just outside the Ghibli legend, more of a curiosity than part of the canon, unseen to all but the studio’s most dedicated completists.
The first Ghibli film that wasn’t directed by either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, “Ocean Waves” is glaringly absent the former’s flair for fantasy or the latter’s gift for minimalist heartbreak. In both scale and subject, it cleaves closer to the delicate wistfulness of a Haruki Murakami novel — one of his earlier,...

With its surprising Los Angeles Film Critics Association win for best animated feature, the delightful, body-switching, “Your Name,” from director Makoto Shinkai, has been elevated to Oscar contention as a result of its unique anime style and off-beat, fantasy romance.
Of course, it helps that Shinkai’s breakout hit is not only the year’s biggest box office success in Japan ($288 million), but also the fifth highest-grossing anime in history. And it’s easy to see why: it taps into Ya fantasies about vicarious excitement, romance and upward mobility. The director wants young adults to ponder why people meet and think about what it means for them.

For a studio that’s effectively shut down, Studio Ghibli seems pretty busy. A handful of animators have branched out and formed their own studio, with a new movie coming next year, and now a title from the company which has mostly gone unseen on our shores is finally arriving.
Given a new, 4K restoration, Tomomi Mochizuki‘s “Ocean Waves” was originally made for Japanese television, but now it’s landing on the big screen in the United States courtesy of the fine folks at Gkids, and it looks like another sensitive work from Studio Ghibli that fans are going to fall in love with.

Studio Ghibli is a pretty big name in the United States—at least far as anime production houses go—but some of the many films the studio has produced still haven’t found their way over here. Now, though, one unreleased Studio Ghibli film is getting a limited theatrical run and an eventual Blu-ray release thanks to indie film distributor Gkids.
Unfortunately for people hoping for the next Howl’s Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke, though, the film is a low-key teen drama called Ocean Waves and not a fantasy epic. It was originally made for Japanese TV in the ‘90s—hence the lack of a theatrical release in the U.S.—and Gkids says it’s about two friends named Taku and Yutaka whose relationship is tested when a “beautiful new transfer student” from Tokyo moves to their town and starts breaking hearts.

In 2014, Studio Ghibli announced that it would no longer produce feature films following director Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement. Its last work to date was Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s “When Marnie Was There,” about an adolescent girl who becomes obsessed with an abandoned mansion and a mysterious girl who lives there. Now, Yonebayashi and producer Yoshiaki Nishimura have founded a new company Studio Ponoc, which has employed many ex-Ghibli staffers, and will soon release its first production: “Mary and the Witch’s Flower.” Watch a short trailer for the film below, courtesy of Slate.

It's always a good time to watch a Studio Ghibli movie. GKids is planning a very limited Us release of a 1993 film that never actually was released in the Us back then. It's titled Ocean Waves, and is about a love triangle between two good friends who both fall hard for a new girl who transfers to their high school from Tokyo. It was actually made as a TV anime but still plays a 72-minute feature, which is being released on Blu-ray following the theatrical screenings. Directed by Tomomi Mochizuki, Ocean Waves is set in the city of Kōchi, on the Japanese island of Shikoku. It doesn't exactly have the same feel as a Miyazaki movie, but it does look just as gorgeous as anything else Ghibli has made, built upon the honest emotions of growing up. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ poster) for Tomomi Mochizuki's Ocean Waves,...

In 1993, Studio Ghibli made an animated film called Ocean Waves, which has also gone by the title I Can Hear the Sea. The film was never officially released in the U.S., but GKids is about to change that. They've restored in the film in 4K and will be giving it a limited release in the U.S. later this month.
I've actually never seen this film, so I'm kind of excited about the opportunity to see a Studio Ghibli film for the first time. The story center on two friends who both end up falling for the same girl who is new to their high school. Here's a brief synopsis:
As a young man returns home after his first year away at college he recalls his senior year of high school and the iron-willed, big city girl that turned his world upside down.

Nearly three decades after Martin Scorsese first became interested in adapting Shūsaku Endō’s “Silence,” the director’s long-gestating passion project is finally arriving in theaters. In it, two young priests played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver set sail from Portugal to Japan, where their mentor (Liam Neeson) is said to have apostatized. Paramount has just released a brief new trailer for the film, which you can find below.

“I never knew Japan when it was a country of light,” intones Neeson as it opens, “but I have never known it to be as dark as it is now.” From there we’re treated to glimpses of 17th-century Japan as Scorsese envisions it in his difficult, rewarding film, with a focus on how perilous this quest is for those two men of the cloth — Christians were violently persecuted at the time.

A Studio Ghibli gem is finally making its way to Us theaters this month. Rarely seen outside of Japan, “Ocean Waves” is an animated film that tells the story of adolescent and teenage isolation.
Adapted from Saeko Himuro’s novel of the same name, the feature was originally made in 1993 for Japanese television, and now Gkids will distribute the movie to select theaters in a 4k restoration.
The story follows two best friends, Taku and Yutaka, who head back to school to what they believe will be another uneventful year. Per the synopsis, “Their friendship is tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude vacillates wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships.”

His fashion sense is dated, his devious villain tactics may be a bit unconventional, but you can’t deny he’s got style. Who is he? He’s Balthazar Bratt, the latest criminal that will wreck havoc in “Despicable Me 3.”
Illumination Entertainment released the trailer for the latest film in the animated franchise, which sees the return of Steve Carell as super villain Gru, Kristen Wiig as his wife Lucy and the adorable and wild Minions.
This time around “Grucy” (Lucy’s couple name for them that Gru hates) will go up against the nefarious villain Balthazar, voiced by “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker. Balthazar is a former child star who’s turned to a life of international crime and is still obsessed with the character he portrayed in the ‘80s. The formidable nemesis uses a Rubik’s Cube as a weapon, has a powerful keytar, moonwalks and dresses like a rockstar.

Hayao Miyazaki is returning to feature-length animated filmmaking and the stellar animation The Red Turtle will get a wider release early next year, but it’s not the only treat from Studio Ghibli that we’ll be receiving soon. After last year kicked off with a U.S. release of Only Yesterday, an unearthed and restored classic from the studio, another widely unseen gem (at least here) will be making its way to theaters.
Tomomi Mochizuki‘s 1993 drama Ocean Waves has been given a new 4K restoration and it’ll be arriving in theaters at the end of the month. Marking the first time a Studio Ghibli film was directed by someone other than studio founders Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the adaptation of Saeko Himuro‘s book follows friends who relationship is tested when a new woman enters their lives.
Ahead of a release on December 28th at IFC Center in New York,...
