CHUSHINGHURA GAIDEN YOTSUYA KAIDAN is a superb horror/chambara film from Kinji Fukasaku, one of Japan's finest directors. CHUSHINGURA GAIDEN YOTSUYA KAIDAN is a combination of two of Japan's most famous folktales: "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" (Ghost Story of Yotsuya) and "Chushingura Gaiden " (The Loyal 47 Retainers). Kinji Fukasaku was no stranger to Japanese literature or, having adapted the "Chushingura" legend in 1978 as THE FALL OF AKO CASTLE and the "Satomi Hakkenden" novels twice as both MESSAGE FROM SPACE and LEGEND OF THE EIGHT SAMURAI. For this film, not only was he taking another shot at Chushingura, but he also combined it with the "Yotsuya Kaidan" story, an idea he had wanted to do back in 1978, making Iuemon, the main character of Yotsuya Kaidan, one of the 47 retainers. In this film, Iuemon is left master less after his master, Lord Asano, attempts to kill the treacherous Lord Kira and out of desperation and due to the extreme poverty he now lives in, poisons his wife Oiwa and marries the daughter of one of Lord Kira's men. This comes back, literally, to haunt him.
"Chushingura Gaiden" and "Yotsuya Kaidan" have been filmed many times, the former by the likes of Kenji Mizoguchi and Hiroshi Inagaki, the latter by such filmmakers as Nobuo Nakagawa and Shiro Toyoda. Fukasaku's version, while not quite as epic as Inagaki's CHUSHINGURA nor as eerie and atmospheric as Nakagawa's GHOST OF YOTSUYA, is nonetheless a highly entertaining film that sadly has not yet seen the light of day here in America. The film features an almost Stanley Kubrick-like use of Wagner's O Fortuna and also boasts fine direction from Fukasaku and lush cinematography. The film is, as usual with Fukasaku, one of the finest, most entertaining examples of it's genre and is quite an improvement over the rather dull and overlong THE FALL OF AKO CASTLE. This would be one of Fukasaku's later films, only six years later he would make what many consider to be his masterwork: BATTLE ROYALE.
