In what plays like a vapid after-school special, The Next Karate Kid (the fourth in the series) recasts the "kid" as a troubled teenage girl (Hilary Swank) whose rebellious streak proves too much for her kind but frustrated grandmother (Constance Towers). Mr. Miyagi enters the scene quickly, as the grandmother decides to put him in charge of the young firebrand for a few weeks while she tends to his dwelling back in CA. It turns out Miyagi taught the kid's grandfather karate, and you can easily guess what will happen next. Given the new feminine spin, the film should have been better. The movie is completely predictable in plotting and all of the manufactured conflicts -- particularly the vendetta of evil disciplinarian Michael Ironside (this guy is allowed to work with kids in a school?) -- are ridiculous. There is nothing offensive (aside from the general insipidity) about the flick, and children under ten will probably enjoy it.
