Yuu Watase 's great comics!
Lady_Targaryen7 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
''Fushigi Yûgi'' is one of the greatest anime series I already watched in my life! The only thing I don't like in this anime series is the End, but anyway I need to give Yuu great points of originality and also a big consideration, because few authors can make an excellent series using so many genres mixed together, like romance, comedy, action, adventure and drama! I love all the characters, and I cannot choose a favorite ! Nuriko,Tamahome,Tasuki,Chichiri,Hotohori,Amiboshi among many others will be forever in my heart!(Lucky Miaka! :P)By the way, the voice actors we have here are quite something! Takehito Koyasu,Hikaru Midorikawa,Tomoko Kawakami and Nobuyuki Hiyama for example are all very well know voice actors from Japan! I really recommend ''Fushigi Yuugi'' for everybody who likes anime and wants to watch an incredible story! You need to be made of stone to not feel in love with it! ;)

Neverending Story Turns Anime?
mirosuionitsaki231 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Having already watched the first two episodes, I can easily tell by the first that this anime series was inspired by the Neverending Story. Haha, this must be interesting! Unlike the Neverending Story, this anime series is romantic, amusing, and doesn't have odd monsters and characters who goes skipping around like idiots. The characters are well-described, the writing is superb and well, the characters are too. Yui, Tamahome, HotoHori (The Emperor), and Miaka! I can even say Miaka is gorgeous. Never thought I'd say that about an anime character.

So yeah. If you're an anime lover and love series that are romantic, watch this anime. It is just the best. 4kids better leave this series alone. I don't want it to end up into a little series for children who turns this into fads and start thinking they're cool. This should stay for kids who are mature enough to watch the original and teenagers and adults. Thank you.

This is one of my favorite series
CaraMSchec4 January 2006
I love this series! It was the first anime I bought years ago. The story line may be a bit predictable but, hey, that's shojo anime for you. I think all the characters are well rounded and have real feelings behind them, you just have to wait, sometimes, to find out what those feelings are. Also, I like the fact that the story takes place in several different settings, such as a country based on ancient China as well as in modern day Tokyo. I feel that the characters develop well going to the different places. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes anime, especially anyone who likes "Ceres: Celestial Legend" which is buy the same author. And don't forget to watch the multitude of OVAs that come after the series, for the most part, they finish up the storyline.

Beautiful
Auryn-415 August 2001
Neverending Story goes anime.

That's what I thought after episode one. =)

This is a kawaii fairy-tale that takes place inside a magical book. A girl from the real world (she is super-annoying and I hate her) is pulled into the book, in which she becomes the priestess of Suzaku, a red phoenix-bird. To bring Suzaku to life, and fulfill her wishes, she must find the seven stars of Suzaku, seven men with marks on their bodies. She falls in love with the first she finds, Tamahome, who has the make of the Ogre upon his forehead.

This is a cute show, but I was surprised of the darkness that springs forth in a few episodes. Between all the puke-kawaii "I love you - I love you too - I love you more - W'll always be toghether - Yes, I love you!", there is torture and rape. Some episodes are not for children.

Overall, I really like this one. The shrieky heroine gets slightly less annoying as the show goes on, but if you can put up with her, the rest of the characters are much more interesting.

Beautiful, fairy-tale-like and cute, with some dark streaks.

Don't miss it!

This series....
Catrob1520 August 2005
Some people may say that they dislike this series. Maybe because of the animation, the story line, or even some of the characters. But this series has to be seen before it can be properly judged.

The animation isn't at top quality because well, it is old. And several of the dub voices are highly annoying. But when these truly minuscule attributes are over looked, the series becomes the much loved series that it is.

Fushigi Yugi gives us a whole new world to fall in love with. Despite that most of the characters are "not real" to the heroine, Miaka, they still shine with human feelings of love, hate, regret, and joy. This series doesn't act as though the only thing that matters is whether or whether not Miaka full fills her duty as the Suzaku no Miko, but shows how even "book characters" can still learn how to mature and grow, and discover what it is to truly love someone.

This series has a knack to go from side-splitting humor, to tear jerking drama. You can easily find yourself among the characters, and grow deeply attached to them. These are not simple characters, they have a past, present and hopefully a future.

This is a well thought out series, and the art in the manga version is beautiful and unique. Although I do recommend the sub, the dub can be..iffy.

But never the less, this is not a waste of your time.

"Best Anime Of The Century and Year's To Come. An Unforgetful Story"
aldrin_pollito27 September 2007
First of all for those people who thinks the animation is poor, dang!!! look at the year it's already a decade. Well forget about those flaw, instead just focus on the story...And also for those who think's that the story has no originality their just hater, (DoughNut haters) well for their FYI, as far as I am born It's my first time to watched this kind of plot. For sure that if this anime has been given a chance to be viewed by you people, I guaranteed that this is not a waste of time and money. So please for those DoughNut Haters just go back to your anime.... cause this is not for you!!!

Fushigi Yugi deserves an audience who will appreciate a good story with slice of life and funny humor. It's an incantation, whoever watched this will going to be stuck watching it until the conclusion ends..... It has good humor... Oh for goodness sake just watch it and you'll see what the heck I'm blubbering about....

All in all it is really a great anime that deserves more praise that you can think of. In my opinion I think that it ranks with those top anime like Fullmetal Alchemist etc.

For those critics who says that English dub is really bad I only have one thing to say...Give it a chance because it's not that bad. I prefer the English dub than the sub.

OK guys watch it!!! I like it... really!

Give it a Chance
emoday3 July 2009
I would like to start out by saying i do NOT like anime. I can barely stand to sit through an episode of Japanese animation without closing my eyes or leaving the room. I do however like Fushigi Yugi which surprises even me. i sat down one day and watched it from the 1st episode until i fell asleep that night, then the next morning i woke up and picked up right here i left off. It's almost like i became obsessed. It was an amazing show and to this day i recommend it to all of my friend rather they like anime or not. So if you watch anime all the time and just haven't seen this one or if you are a person like me who just cant seem to get into the Japanese animation just give this one a chance i really think it is a show anyone can get into. The music is really good too.

I love it
Saku_Tatsuya25 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably one of those series that has a special place in my heart. Mainly because, I've been a fan of this series since I was in the seventh grade. Yes, ever since I was between 12-13. However, back then, I was limited on how much I could know of the series considering my school only had the first volume.

Compared to other anime back in '92; this story does have a lot of originally. Hell, I still love this series much more then I love Inuyasha; mostly due to the fact that Inuyasha is not nearly as original.

Sure, the graphics aren't too hot but what do you expect from an anime that is nearly 13 years old? You can't expect a lot from it.

Anyways, The only draw back of the anime I have is the fact that Chichiri's catch phrase gets annoying.

Shojo Isekai
WeAreLive10 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A cute young girl by the name of Miaka Yuuki discovers this mysterious book in a restricted area inside a library. She gets sucked inside this book and it is up to Yui her best friend in the real to read the book. Miaka meets a handsome young by the name of Tamahome who saves her from a gang of bandits. She then meets the emperor of Konon Hoatori who has unrequited love for Miaka. Miaka is reveled to be the persists of Suzuku in this book.

This story while it can get a bit meldromatic at times but I enjoyed, it's kinda like mixture of love and Isekai imo.

The ost is great and so is the art style.

The voice acting is good too, honestly, screw the dub hating goons in the reviews and make your own decisions on whether you want to watch it dubbed or subbed instead of listening to pathetic troll and Ken/Karen's how to watch anime. IMO while the dub does have some weak points but it's defiantly not atrocious either still better most modern day Funimation dubs.

The characters I personally don't mind the relationship between Miaka and Tamahome, it kinda reminds me of Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon or even Van and Hitomi from Escaflowne in terms of settings. Miaka is like Usagi as one person said in the reviews. The other characters are okay, though I didn't really like Nakago all that much.

All and all I honestly had fun with this.

it is over-rated, however...
dalagatalaga21 July 2006
i do agree that fushigi yugi is over-rated, but still, i love this anime. it's not the best, especially if you're listening to the English dubbing of Miaka which gets sooooo annoying, but its a classic. some character development may not be original, but you have to admit, the story is pretty original. yeah, there's lots of stories where someone gets sucked into a book about an ancient civilization, but this one came out very nicely to me.

well, maybe i should just say this: read the manga. its wonderful. and although her art is much better now, yuu watase's art in her early series is beautiful.

i will end with this: people who are looking for an action packed anime: this is not exactly what you are looking for, but there are episodes with fights.

people who are looking for a romance filled anime: this is definitely what you are looking for, but even then, you can be sickened by the way miaka & tamahome constantly call out for each other.

there are some good laughs in here, so i recommend it.

Early to mid teen anime
marc547731 December 2017
Even for its time, it really wasnt very good. A lot of fans make it sound unique due to age but the truth is it was full of tropes even for the mid 90s. We had already seen these characters many times over in 70s and 80s anime/cartoons like Mazinger and Grendizer. The only difference here is they added more romance making it somewhat like a early Disney cartoon but taking place in Asian fantasy rather than Western. The characters however are the same and the plot was extremely shallow and romance groundless.

People look at the 90s as if we didnt have any quality anime prior. One of the best anime of all time (even today) came out of the 90s in Berserk and most of the trope characters in this show came from much earlier anime like Grendizer in the 70s, and Dragonball, Yamato, Macross and Robotech in the 80s. The setting may have changed, but the story has not and in terms of plot and character development, Fushigi Yuugi does a very poor job. Still its not the worst I have ever seen. Tenjou Tenge and Mad Bull are probably up there as the worst of all time for me.

A story about a girl discovering love and life's priorities.
winejar58 February 2005
I first watched this in the I-channel and was immediately hooked. I kept missing episodes, so I begged my friend for a burnt copy. I absolutely loved it and later got the DVD set.

Summary: Miaka and best friend opens book. They get captured into the book and live their life in this new world. They later on get split apart and became enemies, and now Miaka has to find a way to get both her and her best friend out of the book, but new problem arises. Oh no, what will they do!?

Why I loved it was because I discovered this anime on my own without any recommendations, and without any criticism; it was all on my own finding and I enjoyed it on my own without any expectations. All of the characters had a story and they were all presented very well in the anime. I thought the plot was very well placed and it had a very good point, but we all have to catch the meaning ourselves instead of thinking it's just another anime about love.

As much as I adore this anime, there were a few things about it that annoyed me, and that was because it was too lovie-dovie. Tamahome and Miaka keep having that weird problem where they decide not be together again, and then get back together moments after. That part was repetitive, but I could tell it was still essential to the anime.

A reason why I really liked this anime was that, this isn't just about love. IT ISN'T! It's about Miaka. It's about how she has matured into this beautiful blossom that's wiser, and more responsible. Through her experience with her best friend and her new friends--it became an adventure. Some of my friends said she's too young, but that isn't true. I first fell in love at the age of fifteen also, so it's reality/fantasy. I can tell why most wouldn't like it, but I loved it. I thought it was funny and romantic. It gives you this hope that love does conquer all whether it's true or not.

I still cry watching FY. Every time that I watch it, I find more reasons to love it more, and then other reasons that gets me annoyed. Anyway, if this anime isn't your thing, then I recommend FY's OAV. It's shorter, and it might explain a lot more in a short amount of time. But anyway, I do highly recommend it. At least watch it once and watch it all the way through. If mushy love stories aren't your thing, then you will be disappointed.

note: Please do not get the sequel for this. You will want to hang yourself... Well, if you like FY, then maybe you'll like the parodies in between the sequel's episodes.

BAD PROTAGONIST
rasalexander1 August 2022
The script is amazing, most of the characters have a fair amount of screen time, first otohori's wife didn't have the story she needed she said she something about freeing but I don't really saw it, she only appears in one episode and in the ova she then died, and second WHAT KIND OF A 15 YEAR OLD GIRL KNOW ABOUT MARRYING AND LOVING???, third I wish to see more of miaka's mom like there's a flashback about her making miaka and yui compete for high school exam or something, and I kinda want her reaction on miaka's choice of living in the book with tamahome, she never even knew that miaka is gone in the first place, fourth, yui is a helpless friend, if you really think about it everything that's happened to her is part of the book it's her destiny, miaka always scream tamahome's name like can't you just help your friend for over 10+ years first? I also believe their both tired of living, there's a one episode where miaka admit to the villain that she's miserable that's why she love tamahome so much because he's the only one focusing on miaka, miaka is a fake girl who can't be true to herself, she always puts everyone in danger. The intro and the end theme is amazing though.

Mysteriously Fun
mercy_angel_0929 November 2005
I was recommended this anime by a new friend when I was in high school. Only now, years later, can I appreciate the true work that is Fushigi Yuugi.

Some people complain that the plot is mediocre, the characters are two dimensional, and the animation is horrible. There are times when the plot is shallow, the characters don't seem much more than talking head, and because it's ten years old, the animation isn't what we've come to expect. It's retro; think of watching Speed Racer back in the eighties, or Voltron in the nineties.

The plot revolves around fifteen-year-old Miaka Yuuki, a typical high school girl whose main concerns are boys, food, and shopping. Living with her single mom and college aged brother, Miaka attends junior high school, barely passing her classes and being constantly reprimanded by her best friend and resident genius Yui Hongo. When Yui goes to the library one afternoon, Miaka tags along. In the restricted room of the library, the two girls come across a book titled, "The Universe of the Four Gods." They begin to read it, and magically they are sucked into ancient China. Eventually Yui is able to leave the book, leaving Miaka alone in a strange world with a greedy stranger known only as Tamahome. Miaka is then taken to the emperor of the empire she landed in and is told that she is the savior they've been waiting for, the Priestess of Suzaku who will summon the Beast God and save Konan. As it turns out, each Priestess has seven warriors that were born to protect her, Tamahome, and the Emperor Hotohori, being two of them. Now Miaka must embark on a quest to find the remaining warriors and then she can save the world.

Naturally the road is never easy, and some fairly predictable situations occur. Love triangles, rivalries, concerned older siblings, and typical young love blossom through out the fifty-two episode series. Despite some standard clichés that come with the "teenaged girl saves the world" scenario, there are some moments of genuine, gut wrenching story telling. Each character has a very elaborate back story, and while not every character has tragic origins, each one is the way they are because of the events of their past. Only a handful of the back stories are told, some of them evoking pure emotional responses from the view. Other time it's not so much their past, as their present that makes the view reach for a box of tissues.

There is a unique blend of romance, humor, fantasy, and tragedy thrown together for this series. If romantic comedies with a splash of drama is something you enjoy, don't miss an opportunity to watch Fushigi Yugi.

Best Anime Series. Ever.
Nallohki22 May 1999
This show, far and away was the best anime, and perhaps story I have ever seen. The plot is incredibly intricate, the characters (with minor exceptions) are all intricately written (There is not a single un-sympathetic character in the show), and has a soundtrack that does nothing but push the emotions shown in the show to their limits.

However, it does deal with some adult subject matter, and does some things that will make you think long and hard about it for days, weeks, even years afterwards. The plot twists usually cannot be seen in advance, save for a minute or less before they happen. Even so, there are a few that will throw even the most critical show watcher (they did me!). By far, though, the show is best experienced if you go in with an innocent mind, and let Yuu Watase do her magic... you won't regret it.

Revolutionary Cartoon Series
RHW500015 November 1999
If this masterpiece of a cartoon series ever makes its way unscathed into American TVs, it will forever transform the image of the cartoon.

As the Japanese continue to prove time and again: cartoons are NOT for children. They are for adults.

Fushigi Yuugi is an ultra epic(33 30 minute episodes) of an earth girl and her quest to save a mysterious world. In the process she learns how shallow her earth life was and how unaware she was of who she truely is.

The many characters in this story, jump off the screen with such depth that you will shake your head at how such a thing is possible with pencil lines. Special mention needs to go to Tamahome and Nuriko who are more three-dimensional than anything Disney has yet to create in its animated classics. Please don't miss this set.

Dizzy052329 January 2002
This is the best TV show i have ever seen. I have the box set and i watch it all the time! The characters are sooo good! Yuu Watase is just awesome. You can't beat her. You get so caught up and might i mention that it is ADDICTIVE. You watch the first 5-10 episodes and you will have to watch all the way to 52! Tasuki is the best though everyone is wonderful! I was never a big anime fan, but i LUV THIS! Basic plot: Girl unhappy with life gets trapped in a magical book set in ancient china, finds the guy of her dreams, becomes a priestess, becomes enemies with her best bud, and learns quite a bit about herself!

This is NOT pokemon, i wouldn't recommend anything past the first few episodes for kids under 12 or 13.

IMPORTANT: GET THE SUBTITLED VERSION!!!!! PLEASE!!!The dubbed version (from what i have heard) totally BUTCHERS it!

WATCH IT!

Not at all that great.
chibi_noa16 August 2003
I've heard so much praise for this series that I decided I have to watch it myself... What better for a fantasy freak like myself, I thought, than an anime with pretty art, an alternative fantasy universe with gods and magic, and a little romance on the side? I was wrong. "Fushigi Yuugi" is one of the worst series I've ever watched - I had to quit it halfway, I just couldn't take it anymore.

The basic story, if not too original, has potential - but it is dealt with in such an annoying and cliche way that it's totally uninteresting. I only kept watching as far as I did because I was interested in what happens to the twins.

The characters are mostly horrible - the heroine is one of the stupidest, most detestable ever to appear on screen. Sorry Miaka-fans, I just find her to be ditzy, idiotic, dependant and horribly annoying. Her male counterpart is only a little better - after a while you really get sick of the whole "Tamahome!!!" - "Miaka!!!" recurring motif. Most of the protagonists are not much better, save the wonderful characters of Nuriko and Tasuki, who really don't get enough screen time at all. Mostly I found myself rooting for the bad guys, though they also are led by the uninteresting Nakago, who may seem cool at first, but is really no more than the usual power-crazed maniac. The twins Amiboshi and Suboshi, however, are fascinating and identifiable, and really save the viewer from total boredom. Too bad they don't get that much screen time either.

The animation is pretty bad, and Yuu Watase's beautiful drawings fail to be transferred onto the screen faithfully. It is a good indication of the animation quality that Hotohori, supposedly the most beautiful man in the world, often looks squashed and deformed and very unappealing.

All in all, this series is horribly overrated, imho. For GOOD fantasy anime, check out Slayers or, if you're looking for a really fascinating story and gorgeous art, try Utena (which is the best anime ever, imho.)

Fubuki25 June 1999
I was told this was one of the best anime series ever created, well...it's not. Quite frankly, it is about as complex as Pokemon.

The characters is this series are so-so. They really aren't that great, and often times annoying.

The plot isn't unique at all. A TYPICAL shoujo girl names Miaka Yuuki goes out to find her seven warriors so she can make her dreams come true. BORING. It's the same day to day plot in every episodes. MIAKA is in trouble, TAMAHOME to the rescue. And back and forth, you can't have a moment where everyone is ALL RIGHT.

This is even more sappy than the Titanic. Oh Tamahome, I love you! I love YOU Miaka, it really will drive you nuts.

In the end, this is an awful, boring, chick-flick of an anime. Don't bother getting it, get something with more depth instead.

One of the good 'books'
bluebeatleweirdo15 June 2005
Fushigi Yuugi is by far one of the most powerful love stories out there. Although you do have to put up with the gushy love, there is trauma and tragedy that negate this, not to mention the added comedy bonuses through out the series. There are characters that impress; Tamahome, Nuriko, Hotohori, Tasuki and Chichiri and villains that make you wish they'd get theirs.

It's a classic story of good versus evil, betrayal and of course love. Bring a box of tissues for this story and be prepared to be blown away by the outstanding performances of the voice actors who bring these characters to vivid and beautiful life.

Definitely not what you're used to from American TV...
LadyS28 April 2003
Miaka Yuuki is your average Japanese Junior High student... She goes to school, has a best friend, looks forward to her first boyfriend, and has an entrance exam to take. She also makes below average grades which look even worse when compared to genius-girl best friend Yui's grades. She's obsessed with food, sleeps in class, and has a mother who would like her to get into the best high school in Tokyo.

Things seem impossible until Miaka finds a book- The Universe of the Four Gods, Sky and Earth, locked away in a closed off part of the library. As Yui reads the first lines to her (they are in Ancient Chinese), a red glow pulls the two girls into the magical book. Soon the girls are rescued by a handsome young man, Yui gets pulled back to the real world, and Miaka is offered the chance of a life time: If she becomes the heroine of the book, finds the seven people with the mark of the Suzaku Stars, then summons Suzaku to protect this ancient chinese country, then Suzaku will grant her wishes. But things heat up when Miaka leaves to the real world, only to find Yui is missing. As she goes back looking for Yui in the book, she learns that the neighboring country is looking for their own Priestess to summon that country's god. But where would they find a girl from another world that could?

Miaka's journey then becomes one to rescue her best friend. What could possibly be the reason why Yui would become Miaka's enemy and even be sending people to try and kill her?

This show is not made for kids. It has many funny moments, though it covers very serious topics including rape, sex, suicide, and murder. The only problem I had with this series is that the beginning credits give away too much, so don't watch them until you reach episode 25. The episode previews ruin things throughout the series, so also skip these if at all possible. This is my favorite series from any country. On a scale of 1 to 10, its at least a 20! This is one book that you nor our heroine will be able to put down until the last page is turned- and then you'll have to check out the OAVs!

Almost too good for words!
chellethecat-113 February 2005
I was lucky enough to get to see this anime before it even went mainstream. It's animation is beautiful and the plot is full of enough action and intrigue to keep almost anyone entertained. Some would say that this is a "girl's" anime but I know too many guys who not only have watched this and enjoyed it but would watch it multiple times. I've watched this anime at least 5 times in completion and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for action/fighting, romance, more fighting. The characters are memorable. You can't help but love them, hate them, or both! Watase Yuu writes characters that will stick with you long after you've watched this wonderful anime. It's music ties in with the story perfectly and is just as beautiful as the artwork. As much as I love this anime (it is my absolute favorite) I do think this is definitely more geared at adults. I can't say more then that without giving something away, but just don't count this one out.

One of the best shoujo anime series ever made
Mel-5627 September 1998
The story of a girl who gets pulled into the story of an ancient Chinese book, Fushigi Yuugi includes romance, action, adventure, and some nasty bad guys. 52 episodes long, but they go by pretty quickly. Miaka and Yui are two best friends who go to the library to study for their high school entrance exams. They find the ancient book and are pulled into it and back into what looks like ancient China. Eventually, both girls become revered figures in two different countries in that book, but they become enemies. Each girl has seven protectors, or seishi, to help her. These seishi are VERY interesting characters. You'll love 'em or hate 'em! And there are those you'll love to hate. Slightly predictable but overall, a very satisfying series to watch!

WAY OVER-RATED
OginoChihiro2 October 2003
I've heard so much praise about this series that I decided to watch it myself. I was expecting so much, but the show really dissappointed me. Barely even halfway through, I was forced to stop. Too many people have over rate this show. It really isn't good. The characters and the plot lack originality. The animation is fuzzy and disappointing - even when on DVD. I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone. Not only that, but the DVD's are $200 each(a clear rip-off). On an A - F scale this deserves an F...minus
