Sex & Nudity

  • Many graphic conversations about sex.
  • Many young couples kiss and make out at a house party.
  • A man and woman are in bed together and the woman kisses the man's stomach but he pushes her away.

  • A male and female teenager are in bed together and have sex that lasts for two minute, showing completion. There is lots of kissing, some thrusting and moaning, however there is no nudity. A younger girl hears them from another room but seems annoyed. They are then heard having sex again.

Violence & Gore

  • During the Vietnam sequence, a soldier accidentally steps on a landmine and gets blown to pieces.
  • A man brutally beats another man in a bar, first hitting him with a pool stick, and then punching and kicking him. His face is very bloody.
  • A man hits a teenager, holds him down, and presses a knife into his cheek before he is pushed off. A small amount of blood is seen.
  • A man is thrown out a window and kicked several times before a woman aims a gun at the attacker and threatens him. However the attacker punches the woman and takes the gun and threatens the first man with it.
  • A war battle scene in Vietnam includes shooting and explosions, as well as several deaths and injuries.
  • A brief PTSD-induced nightmare includes shocking, bloody images, such as decomposing faces and maggots in wounds.
  • A man grabs a woman by the throat, pushes her away, and walks off. She pulls him back and he grabs her by the throat again and pushes her away and threatens her.
  • Soldiers kill enemies by shooting them in their heads; blood is shown.
  • A man gets his intestines shot out and his genitals stuffed in his mouth. Extremely disturbing and graphic.
  • A cop gets shot in the head, with very bloody results.
  • A man gets run over by a car that would then crash into a brick wall.
  • In Vietnam, a man decapitates several corpses and keeps the heads as trophies. Graphic and gory.

Profanity

  • "Pussy", "ass", "shit", and "dick" are used multiple times.
  • Racial slurs are used; "dink" and "gook" are used many times, "nigger" is used pervasively throughout.
  • 189 uses of "fuck". Several uses of "cocksucker", and other profanities are used frequently.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Multiple people smoke in a pool hall.
  • Many young adults smoke and drink at a house party.
  • Villagers and soldiers drink in a rural asian restaurant.
  • A man drinks beer at game and his wife complains that he drinks too much.
  • A characters smokes most times he is seen.
  • A man says heroin has never made him feel bad any time he uses it.
  • The main character smokes.
  • Men drink hard liquor in a car, including the driver.
  • Many people smoke and drink in a bar.
  • Four characters smoke at one time.
  • Drug use including speed and intravenous heroin.
  • A man is found dead with a needle in his arm.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There is a particular scene in which a character has a PTSD-induced nightmare. It is brief but very gory.
  • The film was originally rated NC-17 by the MPAA due to graphic violence, but some more violent scenes were cut to get an R release
  • Scenes during the Vietnam war are extremely disturbing. Violence throughout the movie is graphic and may be not be viewable for some people.

  • There is a long shootout between security guards and truck robbers, which ends with the armored truck exploding. Several bloody deaths by shooting are shown onscreen.
