Bug sex!
planktonrules18 September 2009
This is the sort of animated film that really isn't traditional...that's for sure. It's more an art film--the sort of thing the average viewer probably will never see. The film REPETE is about repetitive motions and begins with one type of repetitive motion--sexual intercourse. In addition to a couple having sex, we are treated to images of bugs doing the nasty as well. Then, fortunately (since I am not into bug sex), the repetitive motions are more mundane activities. Again and again, people are shown doing the same sort of things again and again--until finally the characters all look very bored.

The animation style is pretty simple and is made up of cross-hatched black scribbles. It certainly was unusual but not all that interesting.

Warning: Spoilers
"Repete" is a Czech animated short film from over 20 years ago written and directed by Michaela Pavlátová. This one came out shortly after her Oscar nomination and she won some awards with "Repete" as well, for example a Golden Bear in Berlin. The film is basically about how life is repetitive for the human and animal characters during these 8.5 minutes and we also get to witness their attempts of making a difference to the daily routine. Will the dog's owner succeed? Will the dog succeed? Will the flea inside the dog's for succeed? Watch for yourself. Or don't. This was not a particularly memorable film I must say, even if I liked the way in which the filmmaker used colors here. Not too much, not too little, the perfectly right amount. Sadly, this cannot make up for the lack of convincing story-telling. I do not recommend "Repete".

Avoid repeat your life!

This short movie will change the way you face your routine life. It happens to me, honestly, I was not expecting something like that would occur. However, more than many full-length movies, "Repete" has the potential to make you rethink your life. Enjoy!!
