Saint Drogo is the sophomore effort from Monster Makeup Productions, a filmmaking collective headed by co-director/co-writer/actor Michael J. Ahern, co-director/cinematographer/editor Ryan Miller, and co-director/co-writer/actor Brandon Perras-Sanchez. Having found an audience with 2020’s Death Drop Gorgeous between the festival circuit, distribution via Dark Star Pictures, and streaming on Shudder and Tubi, it would have been easy for the creators to cater to the same niche.
But, as boldly proclaimed by Saint Drogo‘s opening moments — in which a mysterious figure shrouded in a white robe looks on as a man spills his intestines onto the sand with a rusty blade — the Monster Makeup team were not interested in repeating themselves. Rather, they pushed themselves to refine their craft and explore new territory while remaining true to their roots: unapologetically queer, raw, do-it-yourself horror.

With roots in real-life murders, “The Hook” urban legend goes hand-in-hand — or should I say hand-in-hook? — with the slasher genre. After being referenced in ’80s slashers He Knows You’re Alone and Final Exam, it went on to at least partially inspire five slashers from the ’90s: Candyman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Campfire Tales, and Lovers Lane. Unfortunately, the latter is the least effective of the bunch.
To be fair, Lovers Lane was made independently for $500,000 — a fraction of the budget of the studio films — before being released direct to video in 1999. Directed by Jon Steven Ward and written by Geof Miller (DeepStar Six) and Rory Veal, the film is best remembered for being the film debut of Anna Faris, one year prior to her starring turn in Scary Movie. “Borat” star Maria Bakalova is going from Rudy Giuliani’s hotel room to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Bulgarian actor has been cast in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” starring Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Vin Diesel as Groot and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. It’s unclear who Bakalova will play in the film, which is scheduled to release in theaters on May 5, 2023.
James Gunn wrote and directed the third and final installment in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, which wrapped production in May. Plot details for the extraterrestrial film — a sequel to 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” — have been kept under wraps, per Marvel tradition. The upcoming movie is the 32nd entry in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Yes yes yes, okay, I guess I should be surprised it took you guys this long to get this one.

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I'm going to spend 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out.And now they've quietly disappeared William Fox's name from the company: guilty by association with Rupert Murdoch, even though he never associated with him.***Two of the 1940s Raymond Chandler adaptations, Howard Hawks' The Big Sleep (1946) and Edward Dmytryk's Murder, My Sweet (1944), are rightly considered classics. Hawks identified the key challenge of the first-person detective story: find a leading man interesting enough that the audience doesn't get bored of seeing him in every scene. Hawks hired Bogart.Dmytryk was lumbered with Dick Powell, but Powell stretched himself and Dmytryk did everything to make the surroundings interesting, even nightmarish. The third movie from the third major studio is Robert Montgomery...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Campfire Tales: Robinson’s Cold War Conjecture Leadenly Onerous
For his first directorial feature since 2006’s true story tinged Lonely Hearts, Todd Robinson is back with another hyperbolized scenario with Phantom. While once again managing to assemble an arresting number of notable names in his cast line-up, the excitement stops there, revealing itself to be a misfire of nearly offensive proportions from its first frames. Struggling to maintain its straight faced seriousness throughout its tiringly slow pacing, it stumbles horridly into a shallow gutter in its last act, capping itself with some resounding laugh out loud sappiness.
The disappearance of a 1968 Russian nuclear missile that was later found unexploded on the ocean floor is the object of affection here. Neither country’s government has declassified their information pertaining to this missile, so this story is what could have maybe possibly happened with it. It’s 1968, and Soviet naval commander...

Campfire tales can sometimes involve a scary moment when it is being told on a lone summer's night. Just what lies out there, beyond the fringes of our vision, or our imagination? It is that fear of the unknown that primitive hunter-gatherers had to conquer and in what evolved from that, it became an early art form. Horror has evolved from early history where it took on mythical roots—where early creation myths are filled with monsters like demons, and good is often in conflict with evil. They existed in stories.
The word ‘horror’ didn’t get used until after Horace Walpole's 1764 novel, The Castle of Otranto, was published. After the genre gained popularity in literature, and motion pictures was just becoming nouveau, the three films that hailed the beginnings of a horror film genre are: Das Kabinet des Dr Caligari (1920); Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922); and Phantom of the Opera...

The 2011 Seattle International Film Festival runs May 19–June 12 and is home to a great many genre films. Here's a look at those which are included in the fest's Midnight Adrenaline segment, jokingly said to be "under quarantine until further notice."
Unauthorized individuals are forbidden to attend these screenings without proper training and/or protection. The contents of the films within have been found to be corrosive to the general cinema-going public. Those familiar with Midnight Adrenaline films will attest to their effects — fever, insomnia, nervous agitation, persecutory delusions, and borderline schizophrenia. Midnight Adrenaline has been shown to be highly contagious and, as of yet, there is no effective form of treatment following exposure.
Siff recognizes that this decision will generate controversy among its patrons. However, it is important to recognize that certified non-Midnight Adrenaline films are available in ample numbers for your safety. Siff cannot be held responsible for individuals...

Actress Amy Smart has made a fresh and charming impression in a string of comedy features, from Road Trip to Rat Race to Just Friends, but her career also has a dark side. She had early roles in Campfire Tales and the Dee Snider vehicle Strangeland, and more recently appeared in Mirrors and Seventh Moon. Starting today, Smart can be seen in the supernaturally tinged dramatic thriller Dead Awake (in select cities from New Films Cinema), and she took the occasion to discuss her many genre features with Fango.

Despite my lifelong affection for short stories when they're in book form, I've never been truly satisfied with the cinematic / televsion equivalent. For every Dead of Night, Asylum, or Creepshow, there are three movies like Deadtime Stories, Campfire Tales, and (ugh) Creepshow 3. When you switch over to the TV side of the equation, you've got your Twilight Zone, your Outer Limits, and the better part of HBO's Tales from the Crypt. Unfortunately you also have the Friday the 13th series, the nearly unwatchable Freddy's Nightmares ... and lots of stuff in between. If it's true that an anthology series is only as good as its best episode, then there's certainly some fun to be had with Masters of Horror, Fear...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
