It’s been nearly 70 years since Godzilla first step foot on the silver screen with Ishiro Honda’s 1954 opus, Gojira. What started as an allegory about the horrors of the atomic bomb and war has since been reimagined myriad times to cover everything from the awesome forces of nature to geopolitical alliances, the absurdities of consumerism to mankind’s inability to curb pollution. Whether Godzilla is a tragic monster, a defender of earth, or children’s role model, there’s no denying the appeal the Big G has to audiences.
After all, it’s damn entertaining to watch a giant monster stomping around the streets of a metropolis and leaving a path of destruction. Sure, American movies like King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms primed American audiences for features of this magnitude. But really, it was Godzilla and the evolution of the IP’s unique genre of films — kaiju...

This article contains spoilers for the entire season of "3 Body Problem."
Against all odds, a new adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" is finally here and it truly lives up to its billing as the nerdiest series of the year. Readers know full well just how deep in the weeds the original story can get, as author Liu Cixin oftentimes spends entire passages breaking down the finer points of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and other heady Stem topics that definitely aren't for the faint of heart. It's to the writer's credit that even the driest of subject matter still provides a foundation for one of the most entertaining epics in all of fiction, made up of a full trilogy of books collectively titled "Remembrance of Earth's Past," thanks in no small part to his commitment to getting the science right wherever possible. In short, Cixin envisions an...

Alien invasion stories have been a standard part of film and television for quite some time. Be it Independence Day, Pacific Rim, or even Avengers, blockbusters and science fiction television have always had a place to comfortably market stories about heroic teams coming together to beat a sufficiently advanced extraterrestrial threat.

However, it seems that Netflix has decided to attempt to break the mold with its latest offering, 3 Body Problem, which is an adaptation of the seminal science fiction novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin. It can be assumed that the team behind the show, led by D.B.Weiss and David Benioff, actually managed to pull it off, as a recommendation to watch the show has come straight from the X handle of Hideo Kojima.

Charlie Covell might be known for the successful adaptation of the comic series The End of the F***ing World, but the British writer is currently working on a new show for Netflix, which is going to be released later this year. Kaos is an original work by Covell that is going to be a fantastic, mythology-inspired black comedy that will follow the adventures of Ancient Greek gods in a modern setting. Ahead of this year’s premiere – a release window has not been specified, as of the time of writing – Netflix has released the first trailer for the series as well.
Kaos is going to have eight episodes, as has been confirmed by the streaming service, and will see legendary actor Jeff Goldblum as the ruler of the Greek pantheon, Zeus; Goldblum replaced Hugh Grant, who was initially attached to the role. You can check out what Goldblum looks like...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains some details of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, set for an eight-episode launch on the streamer March 21.
“Why should I get bent out of shape about what the world might look like 400 years from now,” physics research assistant Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) says flippantly in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. “I have no control over that.”
The sentiment of those words landed hard on me, because that’s almost exactly how I felt about the bloated and often remarkably boring big-budget sci-fi series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood producer Alexander Woo.
Premiering Friday night at SXSW in Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Netflix’s much-hyped series is based on the Hugo Award-winning writings of Cixin Liu. Set to launch with eight episodes worldwide almost everywhere but Liu’s native China on March 21, the fact is 3 Body Problem...

Actor Brent Spiner, who played the android Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," once called the role a double-edged sword. While playing Data brought Spiner a great deal of attention and fame, he also knew he would forever be associated with that one role. He once commented that he could go on to win an Academy Award, but that Data would still be listed first in his obituary. The associations that grow between "Star Trek" and its actors are unbreakable. Just ask William Shatner about it sometime.
Spiner has returned to "Star Trek" again and again, however, eventually playing seven different characters throughout the franchise: He played Data, Lore, B-4, Noonien Soong, Adam Soong, Altan Soong, and Arik Soong. Spiner has clearly made peace with his "Star Trek" associations and embraces them with enthusiasm. Most recently, Spiner appeared in the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," playing a very...

Harry Connick Jr. is heading to the Mediterranean Sea. In new romantic comedy Find Me Falling, the singer and actor plays a role that may initially seem like familiar territory for the singer and actor: a rock star. But that’s where the similarities between Connick and his character, John Allman, end. “He’s playing against type as a brooding, tattooed, lonely rock star,” writer/director Stelana Kliris tells Tudum. “We couldn’t have asked for a better fit, and on top of that, he wrote two fantastic songs for the film.”
Connick isn’t Find Me Falling’s only star. The island of Cyprus, which Kliris calls home, was given an onscreen spotlight of its own.
“This film is a love letter to Cyprus, and I hope that it transports audiences and gives them a little bit of magical escapism,” she says. “Plus, there was nothing better...

The 1990s were full of top-notch science fiction films that won over critics and set the box office on fire -- after all, we're talking about a decade that produced "Independence Day" (which beat "Mars Attacks!" to theaters), "The Matrix" (albeit with some complex behind-the-scenes activity), "The Fifth Element" (ripping off Plato to great effect) and the list goes on and on. But not every sci-fi release can be a winner, and the decade also had its fair share of stinkers. Whether they were derivative of other (better) films, hacked to pieces as a result of studio interference, or let down by the limitations of 1990s technology, there are endless reasons why an ambitious science-fiction project might crash and burn.
However, many of these ambitious but panned sci-fi movies are often not without their redeeming factors, and despite their negative reception -- especially on Rotten Tomatoes -- you can often...

Disappointing sequels often fail to capture the essence of the original, lacking depth or originality. Ignoring what made the first movie great sets up sequels for failure. Legacy sequels face the challenge of meeting high expectations and can be especially disappointing if they fall short.
Disappointing movie sequels were aplenty in the 2010s. As the era of live-action remakes took off, studios looked to their existing IP for easy-to-produce movies. However, some sequels were not uncalled for but simply failed to live up to expectations. Whether sequels like this came a year or 20 years later, they faced the challenge of continuing a great story but lacked the quality or gravitas of their predecessors. Legacy sequels have to contend with decades of anticipation, making them all the more disappointing if they are not good.
That is not to say that unnecessary sequels are not typically the ones that fail. However, the...

Super Bowl Sunday always has a little something for everyone, but this year's big game in Las Vegas went above and beyond in the razzle-dazzle department.
We were, of course, prepared for a celebrity-crammed spectacle due to the luxury booth presence of Travis Kelce's substantially famous girlfriend, but this gridiron rematch between last year's combatants, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, brought out more than just arguably the most famous pop star on the planet. The only pop star in that aforementioned argument, Beyoncé, was there with her hip-hop god husband Jay-Z! The world's greatest basketball player, LeBron James, flew in from Los Angeles for the contest! And Paul freakin' Rudd, sporting a bushy freakin' mustache that would've driven Avery Schreiber into a jealous rage, prowled the sidelines pre-game in support of his hometown Chiefs!

Hit-or-miss directors can still have one truly great movie. Making just one great film is more than most achieve in their entire lives. Some hit-or-miss directors started off with incredible debut movies but failed to recapture that magic in their later career. Others gained success through so-bad-it's-good movies that left a lasting impact on popular culture. Directors like Roland Emmerich, Jamie Babbit, and Simon West have had mixed careers, but their one truly great movie, such as Independence Day, But I'm a Cheerleader, and Con Air, stands out as a significant achievement in their filmography.

Will Smith's "I, Robot" movie greatly deviates from Isaac Asimov's original book, with changes in characters and a different setting. The movie missed the opportunity to explore the expansive world of the book by confining events entirely to Chicago. Despite the differences, both the book and movie maintain the core element of Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics.
Of all the movies to star Will Smith, there's one that could have been much better if it were more faithful to its source material. Will Smith's sci-fi movies are among his most popular, and he's starred in a variety of films in the genre over the years. He has also been in more than one book adaptation, with each project differing in levels of accuracy when compared to the original literary work. However, there's one of Smith's projects in particular that strayed very far from the book on which it was based.

Bill Pullman has been around for quite a while. While his most famous role is undoubtedly President Whitmore in Independence Day (and its lackluster sequel), Pullman's impressive career has also included movies like Spaceballs, Casper, While You Were Sleeping, Sleepless in Seattle, and even The Equalizer. On only a few occasions has Pullman ever tackled a Western, that is, until he took center stage in the 2017 A24 picture, The Ballad of Lefty Brown. If you haven't seen this flick, you'd best add it to your queue, because Lefty Brown takes your standard Western sidekick and instead propels him into the leading role. And boy, is it a fun ride.

It's fascinating to look back and track shifts in the media landscape in response to the real world. One need only compare director Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day" -- a whiz-bang 1990s blockbuster where A-listers crack wise while battling aliens hell-bent on conquering Earth -- with director Steven Spielberg's grave and distressing post-9/11 take on "War of the Worlds" to see how a major historical event can result in two drastically different variations on the same genre template released less than 10 years apart.
In point of fact, by the time "Bones" premiered its 12th and final season on Fox in 2017, cultural attitudes had evolved dramatically from what they were at the start of the show's run in 2005. When Hart Hanson's procedural got going, the U.S. was only a few years into its joint invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, with memories of the September 11 terrorist attacks still very much fresh on everybody's minds.

Editor’s note: Underplayed in the media intrigue over the prospect of Warner Bros swallowing Shari Redstone’s empire that includes Paramount and CBS is the gloomy reality that another storied Hollywood studio could go the way of Fox. That went from a vibrant, multi-faceted creative content-generating enterprise to a headstone when Rupert Murdoch decided to cash out for Disney stock. David Zaslav spent 2023 kicking employees and finished films to the curb to pay down debt just to get this far; chances are more blood will spill down Melrose if Redstone sells some or all the pieces of Paramount to be mashed into an existing studio. When Bill Mechanic was perched atop Paramount, Disney and Fox, he built Disney’s home video from a $30 million to $3 billion business and found ways to take risks and squeeze max returns from blockbusters from Braveheart to Titanic, Independence Day and many others. Jeff Goldblum's role in Asteroid City reverses his previous role in Independence Day, showcasing a different perspective on alien encounters and the human condition. Goldblum's performance as the alien represents accepting the unknown and moving forward, contrasting with his defensive role in Independence Day. The alien in Asteroid City does not bring downfall or destruction, symbolizing the uncertainty of life and the need to accept unexpected circumstances.
Jeff Goldblum's layered Asteroid City role not only promotes a deep contemplation of the human condition but is a clever reversal of a mega-hit movie the actor starred in before. Goldblum has previously been the harbinger of profound meaning in a number of roles across his varied and extensive acting catalog. Whether he's warning humanity about the consequences of their creations, like Jurassic Park's Ian Malcolm, or obsessing over the limitations of the human body, like The Fly's Seth Brundle,...

Will Smith's return for "I Am Legend 2" is a pleasant surprise, considering his character's death in the first film. The I Am Legend sequel will ignore the original film's ending and bring back Smith's character, which is delightful for fans. Smith's absence in the "Independence Day" sequel is even more disappointing in light of his role reprisal in "I Am Legend 2."
Will Smith's absence in a popular sci-fi franchise's sequel seven years ago is all the more disappointing in the wake of his exciting return for I Am Legend 2. Smith's reprisal as Robert Neville for the forthcoming I Am Legend follow-up came as a pleasant yet truly shocking surprise, especially when considering the fate of his titular character in the debut film. One element that all great blockbusters have in common is stunning visuals. Even if a story is lacking, the visuals can help save a movie from being a letdown for some people. This statement can be applied to some sequels, literary adaptations, and films with original concepts. While they may fall short of their narrative potential, the CGI can be stunning enough to make audiences forget.
Nevertheless, there is a strong chance that viewers were at least thrilled by the CGI-filled spectacle on display. Whether it is used to create explosive action, destruction, or fantastical creatures, CGI became the standout element in these rather lackluster movies. From science fiction sequels like Pacific Rim: Uprising and Independence Day: Resurgence to live-action remakes such as The Lion King, these movies were saved by their stellar use of CGI.

Even if you don’t immediately recognize the name Frances Sternhagen, there’s still a good chance that you’ve seen her acting in something at some point over the decades. Sternhagen has stage and screen credits going back decades, and over that time she racked up Emmy nominations and Tony wins. Sadly, it’s being reported today that she passed away of natural causes this past Monday, at the age of 93.
Sternhagen earned her first screen credit on the TV show Producers’ Showcase in 1955, and went on to work on 75 other projects, including the Burt Reynolds comedy Starting Over, the Sean Connery sci-fi classic Outland, Independence Day – the 1983 drama, not the alien invasion movie; Dudley Moore’s Romantic Comedy, the John Lithgow / Morgan Freeman drama Resting Place, the Michael J. Frances Sternhagen, a Tony-winning actress with many decades on the stage and screen, died Monday of natural causes in New Rochelle, N.Y.
She was known for her recurring role as the regal grandmother of Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) on “ER” and as Cliff’s mother on “Cheers,” for which she was twice nominated for Emmys.
“Frannie, as she was known to her family, friends, and colleagues was a hardworking, award-winning, beloved and celebrated actress for over 60 years. Her foundation was the theater, but she was known for roles in film, television, and spoken arts. She was versatile – adept at comedy as well as drama, character roles and leading ladies,” her family said in a statement.
Sternhagen made a distinct impression in her role as the doctor who helps Sean Connery’s cop in Peter Hyams’ 1981 sci-film “Outland” and in “Misery,” she played the sheriff’s wife Virginia, who was...

The most popular movie franchises typically run for multiple installments, with some still going strong today. However, there are also times when franchises start out promising with their potential but unceremoniously end after their sophomore outing. Several reasons contributed to these franchises' sudden pauses, whether because of a lackluster box office reception, critical backlash, or plans for a third movie falling apart.
These hopeful franchises could have kept going, but low reception of the second film or failed attempts at creating a third prevented that from happening. From Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy to The Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield, these franchises pulled the plug after two movies.

Francis Lawrence agrees with the critics that the theatrical ending of I Am Legend was the wrong way to end the story.
During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director of the 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller starring Will Smith spoke about the polarizing ending depicting the star's death as well as the alternate version that audiences were in favor of. In retrospect for Lawrence, he believes that he should have shot the true ending as written in Richard Matheson's 1954 novel.
Will Smith Recalls Steven Spielberg Convincing Him to Accept Men in Black Role
"I prefer the original ending to the two that we have. But the truth is now I would’ve built it do be able to do the ending from the novella, truly just do that story," Lawrence said. "But with the money being spent, everybody was nervous about doing something so nihilistic.

Will Smith once shared that he isn’t above taking acting advice from his own family if he needs to. But one time he took his son’s advice so seriously that it motivated him to redo an entire movie.

Smith did the kind of film he wasn’t used to starring in when he was recruited for the animated feature Shark Tale. The film came Smith’s way after it was written with him in mind for the lead role. Stargate's success led to a TV franchise rather than big screen sequels, allowing for more exploration of different planets and alien races. Stargate Sg-1 was the most popular entry and had a successful ten-season run, with Stargate: Atlantis as its first major spinoff. The Stargate timeline can be a bit confusing, but a user-friendly approach is to alternate between the later seasons of Sg-1 and the first three seasons of Atlantis. Some fans choose to skip the 2018 prequel Origins due to its lack of connections and questionable quality.
Stargate became a sprawling franchise, so what is the best way to approach it? The success of Stargate led director Roland Emmerich down a path of increasingly expensive disaster movies like Independence Day or 2012, and in hindsight, his 1994 sci-fi blockbuster starring Kurt Russell is almost small scale compared to his later work. While the concept of a Stargate should have led to big screen sequels,...

Independence Day's iconic White House explosion shot used a plaster model built to exact proportions on a 1:24 scale, with 40 explosives strategically positioned for maximum effect. Filming tricks, including slow-motion and matte double exposure, enhanced the impact of the explosion, allowing the audience to fully grasp its destructive power. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in creating the practical effects for the White House explosion made it a powerful and enduring cinematic moment, surpassing the impact of later CGI attempts in similar films.
Independence Day’s iconic White House explosion shot harks back to the glory days of blockbuster practical effects. The 1996 film, directed by disaster movie titan Roland Emmerich, follows numerous perspectives as it tells the story of a terrifying alien invasion. One such perspective is fictional president Thomas Whitmore, who witnesses the terrifying might of the otherworldly invaders first-hand when one of their ships destroys the White House.

Jeff Goldblum’s film career started in a particularly auspicious manner since his first four films were all highly regarded works of the early 1970s: “Death Wish”, “California Split”, “Nashville” and “Next Stop, Greenwich Village.” He continued to work in film and television for the next four decades and even returned to Broadway a few times, most notably in the highly regarded Martin McDonough play “The Pillowman.”
Along the way Goldblum has picked up a number of award nominations including an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film for “Little Surprises.” He received an Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on “Will and Grace” in 2005. He also was a nominee for Best Actor for two of the most prestigious critics awards groups for his work in “The Fly.” Both the New York Film’s Critics and the National Society of Film Critics named him as one of the top three actors of the year.

“30 years ago, I left Boston with my tail between my legs. I had dreams of returning, triumphant. Now, those dreams just keep slipping farther and farther away.”
Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot is psychiatrist Frasier Crane’s (Kelsey Grammer) latest reinvention. He first reinvented himself when he left Boston for his hometown of Seattle (spinning off from “Cheers” to his own original series). Then he did it again when he left Seattle for Chicago to be with the woman he loved, in the series finale of “Frasier.” 19 years after the original series ended, Frasier Crane is reinventing himself once again. This time, back in Boston, with a new career in academics and a new role as a present father to his (now adult) son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).

Barry Sonnenfeld's 1997 film "Men in Black" was the highest-grossing film (domestically) of 1997. Derived from then-hip urban legends about alien abductions and the suit-clad mystery men called in to cover up the evidence, "Men in Black" hit a sweet spot with audiences, blending sci-fi mayhem, quirky special effects, and the sheer overwhelming star power of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to create one of the decade's defining blockbusters. Although the more significant cinematic advances of the decade were being made within a growing, robust indie scene, over on the studio side of the fence, audiences were in the mood for high-profile sci-fi. 1996 saw the ultra-success of "Independence Day," and films like "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" and "Armageddon" made almost half a billion between them.

The movie Casper premiered 28 years ago, meaning the cast has had plenty of time to embark on a lot of new projects since then. The film starred classic '90s actors Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa as the film's leads. However, Casper also featured Hollywood royalty like Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle.
While many of the film's actors took on projects with a similar spooky Halloween atmosphere to Casper, others leaned more into diverse comedy roles. A few of the stars even returned to the Casper franchise for other installments, while others never looked back. Here's what the cast of Casper has been up to since the 1995 film's premiere.
